  1. Yeah, the vet told us to not to lay off the exercise despite the sire's owner telling us the opposite. Another thing we were told not to do was to wash/shampoo her throughout the pregnancy. The vet again told us the opposite!

    Thanks for the link. ^^

  2. Good news as the vet states the eye closure is just an allergy (when I got home at 5pm her eyes were back to normal) The food could be causing the allergy that's why she doesn't want it.

The skin sores he called hotspots and mentioned mange. He has given us some topical cream to rub on them twice a day as well as some anti-biotics for her to take for a week.

    And she is pregnant!!

Thanks for all your input. Any more info regarding getting rid of the ticks would also be appreciated.

And Lampard, I truly hope your dog is better real soon.

  3. ^^^ Thanks Elfe

Unfortunately the vets was closed. Back there 8:30 am tomorrow.

Her exercise has been reduced considerably since we mated her. We were told she mustn't do anything strenuous so it came down to chasing after the ball in the backgarden, though after a few throws she would take the ball and lie down.

She always has someone around her and she is always around someone so I can't see it being any emotional neglect - she really is part of the family.

We had a major problem with ticks for the best part of a year. In December the vet put some drops along her spine and that appeared to eventually rid her of the ticks, although a couple reappeared this week (I think the ticks are embedded in the garden and became dormant due to the cold weather up here).

Hopefully the vet will be able to confirm whether she is pregnant or not.

  4. I have a Golden Retriever, 2.5 years old.

A month ago we had her mated and since then she has become extremely lethargic - we put this down to the fact that she could be pregnant. However in the last 10 days she has started scratching a lot and 'chewed' the hair off her front legs in two places, and stopped eating. I just came home and her eyes are closed - she can open them for a while put prefers them closed. I'm off to the vet now, but any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

  5. If you can remember, a bowl of joke before bed, if you can't then a bowl when you wake up.

Plus a litre or two of water before bed - not advisable if you have a bedwetting problem. It usually makes me wake up in the middle of the night for a jimmy - this gives me another opportunity to drink another litre or so and then take a paracetamol.

If it's a work day I'll have a really spiced up Virgin Mary for brekkers, if it's a weekend I'll have a large Bloody Mary and then doze on and off all morning.

Hello my name's Dave and I'm an ....

  6. I often have a major problem downloading the UBC schedule so don't bother with it. Also, the UBC guide is only delivered once in a blue moon.

Unfortunately, UBC IS pants, although as most things are repeated ad infinitum you don't have to wait that long if you missed something worthwhile!

Once my local cable can guarantee the Premier League, then I'll switch.

  7. Worked in the Oz bush - those cockatoos/gallahs drove me postal!!

    I have a 2 1/2 year old Golden Retriever - Mimi.

Just had her mated last week, intending to keep one puppy as company for her.

Had a battle royale with the missus when we first got her - she wanted her banned from inside the house but I said no. Compromised with the upstairs being off limits.

    My best friend.

  8. Agreed.

Back in the middle of the 90's I was asked to teach in Phuket for a month .  Thought it would be a piece of piss.  How wrong was I!  Went and got CELTA'd up back in the UK and then the lights started to come on.  The nerves will come and go.  For new classes I always get a few butterflies but they soon vanish.  I don't know about the best place to take a course in Thailand - over on Ajarn.com there used to be plenty of threads on this topic but they didn't seem to be too objective.

Hey, Longsands, that's a very generous appraisal of the slugfests that used to prevail on that subject. There is no sureproof way to evaluate all the courses, and no way to evaluate the trading of insults that prevails on the forums.

Any course is better than no course at all. The longer the course, the better it is, all other things being equal. You might want to visit because you might be put off by an overly stuffy Brit or an overly casual Aussie, etc. A course that's too cheap may not be worth any time and money at all, and some courses might be overpriced above US$1,500. Without intending to criticize Longsands' experience - in most cases, why take a course overseas if you intend your first teaching years to be in Thailand?

Yeah PB, just being a bit diplomatic about those threads. I never contributed to them as they never actually went anywhere.

Whilst discussing a lesson plan with a recently employed teacher, who came certified from a certain Thai establishment, he stopped me in mid-sentence and asked 'What's the difference between a countable and uncountable noun?' :o I asked him about the course and it appeared to be a typical Thai education - pay your money, have sanook, then walk out with a certificate.

In contrast, I did my CELTA in the UK the minimum entry level was a BA. After they received proof of my degree I then had to complete a test. I was then invited to an interview, where I was asked to give examples of passive past perfect continuous usage, etc. They then told me how intense the course was going to be, questioned my resolve, and put it to me to really consider my application. There were 32 on my course, about a quarter either dropped out or were failed. There was no fun in the sun, believe me.

So for me, and please understand that this is based on my limited experience, I value a certificate from the UK/USA/Australia over one obtained here. Please also bear in mind I'm talking about newbies to teaching, not those who have been teaching for x-years and now possibly need a certificate to continue here. For these guys I agree with you PB, however if they wish to teach later in another country I'm not so sure how much weight a Thai certificate will have.

  9. A friend of my best mate in the UK has just retired and is coming out here to shack up with a girl he met in Pattaya last year on his first trip to Thailand. He's asked if I can meet him and his girl and then give my opinion on her and if she is the real deal or not.

That's a tough ask - how am I supposed to form an opinion in such as short time and also it's none of my business. I'm probably going to give him some anecdotal stuff and then refer him to stickman's readers' letters. It'll then be up to him.

  11. You're joking, right? You don't *really* think that I don't know the rules of grammar (in this case, not mechanics, dear) and that I'm not simply using slang to sound more "folky"? [i'll put that in scare-quotations so that you know that I know that it's not a proper word! Never can tell these days, can we!]

I'd hazard a guess that "folky" actually is a word.

  12. Out in the Isaan sticks with a ###### of a hangover thus totally knackered I was taught 'Koi Bor Mee Heng' meaning 'I've got no energy'.

Sometime later I couldn't stiffle a yawn in an evening class and excused myself by uttering the above. Cue looks of amazement then hysterics. I had told them that I was in need of Viagra!

  13. Thanks very much for all the input.

One of the reasons I want to get one is to play DVD's - killing 2 birds etc. What I gather then, is that I must get the player 'chipped' if I want to play games and DVD's from other countries but if I just buy the Thai copies then they should play no problem?

By the way, the games are being sold up here for 50 Baht (PS2) and 25 or 30 Baht for PS1.

Apologies for posting in the wrong forum

    Cheers.

  14. Going to buy a PS2 for my daughter's Xmas present. In Lotus Nong Khai, they have a PS2 player for I think just under 15,000 B. The Indochine (Thasadet) Market has just started selling them for 8,500 B prior to any bargaining. At the market they have been smuggled in so are in fact 'duty free' and don't come with a receipt, although they DO honour the year's guarantee (past experience).

As I'm coming to BKK next week I'd appreciate it if anyone could tell me the major outlets price of a PS2 in BKK and any other places that might sell them cheaper.

    Thanks in advance.

  15. That's about right if you mean the samlors. Also that should be the price per samlor not per person (unless there is 5 or 6 of you). The little buggers will try it on, especially at the train station and bridge.

Around town the locals pay up to 20 baht - I get this price when I flag one down, rather than approach the ones parked up at strategic places (eg outside the Mut Mee). Saying 'sow' (20 in Isaan Thai) baht often makes them laugh and they'll happily chat away to you for the whole ride oblivious to the fact you can't understand jack!

  16. Sitting in a restaurant before work, phone placed on the table - A bloke speaking the poshest Queen's English ever comes over with a newspaper and a map. Placed the newspaper on the table (and thus over the phone), asked me 3 or 4 questions about the area, I showed him on the map, he thanked me and departed picking up his newspaper. Wasn't until I got to work that I realised I'd been rolled. Cancelled the the phone straight away. It was locked anyway so the <deleted> got no free calls to momsie and dadsie asking for more money to be put on his credit card. Scum.
