I am on an METV, my last stamp says admitted until April 11 and my flight home is on April 10. Before this, I am planning a trip to Vietnam out of Suvarnabhumi. My first thought was getting a re-entry permit before leaving, but couldn't I save the expense and just leave on March 19 and re-enter March 23 on a visa waiver? Hotel booking, ticket out of Thailand, 20 kB ready, of course. Thanks for advice.

That could mean an easy re-entry permit when going to Koh Kong

Has anyone experience with Jomtien, positive or negative?

Indeed, such a notification might prove sufficient in convincing them of his address credentials.

There is no requirement to have a permanent address. You do need proof of more than a few days at an address within the area of responsibility of the office where you are applying for the extension of stay.
They want that so that people cannot just change to a different office to avoid problems that another one may of caused.
That sounds great. But I was under the impression that some IOs did not accept a hotel address, and rentals shorter than 1 month were illegal. Please clarify. Thanks.

As I understand it - but having spent too much time on this forum I am not sure to understand anything at all - the advantage of the O - A seems to be that you don't have to register an address in Thailand. I like to stay in hotels that do the TM-30 stuff for me, but a hotel address is not accepted for an extension of stay.
True?

Not as far as I know.
Only a few large crossings have re-entry permit desks such as as Nong Khai and Poi Pet.
Could also be interesting - thanks!

No you can't. You'll need to get one from an immigration office or at the border crossing (if available).
Didn't know that you can get re-entry permits at some border crossings. Does anyone know if Had Lek is one of them?

You would not need a re-entry permit it you have a METV since it allows unlimited 60 day entries until the date it expires.
You would only need one if you wanted to travel during the last 60 day entry from it you can do on the enter before date on your visa.
If staying in a hotel the receipt for it would be enough.
Yes re-entry after the "enter before" date, that's what I meant. Thanks for clearing things up.

1. Copy of passport homepage, copy of TM6, copy last entry stamp, copy of Visa/extension, proof of address, 4x6cm photo.
2. TM8 printed double sided on one piece of paper.
3. TM13 is for those with PR status.
"proof of address": required for an METV staying in a hotel?
and what is the correct form?
thanks ...

I wasted a day this summer going to the Zurich consulate for an METV on the basis of the information on their website. They said I had to go to the embassy instead, and that in a not very friendly way. In Bern, I ended up getting my Visa, but since their information on the web was incomplete I needed to go back one more time. As a retiree I obviously couldn't provide a letter from my employer, but they wanted an updated pension statement, in addition to a bank statement of 6 months. Lesson learned, don't believe what it says on the internet, just go and ask.

Great and helpful answer; thank you, Ubonjoe.

Stupid question: At the end of an METV, having
entered Thailand before the "enter before" date and received another 60 days, could I take one more trip abroad during this time by using a reentry permit? Applying the same rules as for an SETV it would not seem impossible, but does anyone know? -
No. Only the 6 and 12 month ordinary (business) visa are multiple entry. You need a new visa

What hassle? You can get a bus direct to Immigration. Too many taxi drivers these days are newly arived from upcountry and haven't a clue where places are in Bangkok. Others will take advantage of your like of Thai and try to add kms to the meter charge. Learn a few basic Thai words for giving directions, of course tht assumes that you know where you are going.
What bus?

Good idea.
The name of the Cambodian border post at Hat Lek near Koh Kong is Cham Yeam

Thank you for this interesting story which shows me that my initial worries were not completely unfounded. I am not Vietnamese, but I think the personal preferences of an immigration officer can hit just anyone. I'll carry a return ticket and enough money so I'm probably safe, but I am still curious to see what happens.
Yes, no problems.
However, my Vietnamese friend who I picked up on the Thai-Cambodia border at Hat Lek/Cham Yeam (Koh Kong) a few weeks ago was first asked by Cambodian immigration to request "permission" from the Thai immigration authorities before they would stamp him out. The Thais happily let him in, but his outbound air ticket and my letter stating he would be residing with me (in the end he only spent one night at my place as the other two nights we were travelling) helped - I think he was asked for sufficient funds or an air ticket - he had only an air ticket but wouldn't have had 20,000 or even 10,000 Baht to show, only maybe 5000. However, that's because he's Vietnamese that he was targeted and subject to more scrutiny as that is one of the target nationalities of the crackdown. Never-mind the fact that my friend has only ever stayed in Thailand for a few days at a time, hasn't been here for 7 months and always comes here in my presence; there has never been a reason for him to travel here alone unless I'm here too as we do business together so that means every single time he has ever been to Thailand was with me.

I am going to Cambodia for 6 months on an ordinary visa. During that time I may want to visit Thailand 2-3 times for about a week each time, for shopping or medical services. Can I do this on a visa waiver or do I have to expect trouble from the 2nd time on?

Go to Pattaya; that's close for you. I was in the same situation a few years ago. I was there on a visa waiver and they first put me on visa, forgot what kind, for 3 months, and then a retirement visa, all at once. They even sent me to a branch of Kasikorn down the street that would write out the necessary bank letter. You give them the name of the hotel you are staying. Very friendly, very efficient. Can't imagine they have drastically changed their attitude.
Good luck!
P.S. just refer to this post concerning what I said about the Pattaya/Jomtien office:

A person cannot just go to Pattaya to apply. It requires an address there and proof of that address.
If the OP can afford to stay one night in Pattaya that's enough for proof of address

"Mr.T Taxi" <[email protected]>
"Price is 1,200 Baht all included."
Correction: This is Pattaya-Don Mueang. The other way it's more (100-200 THB, not sure)

The validity of the visa issued in Bangkok was just recently increased to 3 months (not the length of stay which remains at 28 days), so the VOA is probably not around the corner.

Thanks for the help all. I think I am going to plan to buy a one-way ticket to Kuala Lumpur (found it for $59 US). I will use that for show. I will then just skip that flight to KUL and do a visa run to cambodia for the extra 15 days. I hope this way will work....?
Why not buy Hat Yai - Kuala Lumpur 390 THB promo + taxes f you are not planning to use the ticket?
