Even if you were stopped by the police — if you’re on the way to the airport and have booked flight — they are not going to arrest you. You might risk (very low) being extorted by a corrupt opportunistic cop, but the authorities do not prosecute people on short overstays, especially someone on a one day overstay who’s on their way to the airport.

    Thanks for that.

If leaving from either airport in Bangkok you will not be fined 500 baht for less than 24 hours of overstay.

The only risk is getting caught on the way to the airport but showing a ticket out of the country should eliminate any problems.

To save all the rushing around and the overstay you could apply for an extension at immigration, pay 1900 baht and be granted 7 days to leave the country after it is denied.

    Thanks @ubonjoe

I don't have time for a massive wait at chang wattana. And I'm due in VN for business 25th.

Ill have the ticket printed and take the risk. Will be 8am I'll head off. Presume most police won't be doing roadblocks at that time...

Thanks as ever for your advice.

  3. Hi,

Delay on Visa from VN embassy. I can collect at 4pm 24th (my Thai visa expires 24th) but might be queue. Worst case I leave at 5pm.

Back to Condo close by. 15 minutes. Get baggage. All mad rush and stressful. Book flight hotel etc...

Last flight to Hanoi is 7.05pm.

If I'm in taxi at 5.30pm and in rush hour might not make it for check in.

    May take an hour. 6.30pm.

    Thoughts?

I'd rather take the 11am flight the next day. 1 day overstay. Leave home at 8am.

Scared of risks of being stopped etc...

    Could you advise?

    Thanks,

Both are about the same for issuing a tourist visa. Your choice of which one to do it at.

The consulate in HCMC requirements are here, http://www.thaiembassy.org/hochiminh/en/services/7442/80804-For-Non-Vietnamese-passport-holder-|-Dành-cho-ngườ.html

    Thanks, Joe.

    I carry a UK passport.

    1. Since I will be in Vietnam maybe for a few months I will only have a one way ticket booked back to Thailand when ready. They ask for round trip ticket? I'll only know when to fly back when finished in VN. So I guess they'll accept a one way ticket and I'll keep a copy of my one way ticket out of Thailand. Or do even immigration on entry require a round trip ticket. In which case I'll just have to get one which allows change of date....?

    2. They ask for hotel accommodation covering lebgth of visa. Presume they will accept my contract from my Condo?

    3. It says they can offer 6 month multiple entry TV. Is this true? Since I thought that Thai immigration don't accept these anymore and they were not available?

    Many thanks, Joe.

  5. Hi,

I going to Vietnam for a while to take a break from BKK.

    I have a UK passport.

I have and ED visa and Tourist visa in my passport (both from Vientiane, Laos) in my current passport. Been here about 2 years.

Can anyone explain if either of the cities mentioned are easier to gain a Thai tourist visa for when I return?

And is there anyone recently who has been and can say what paperwork they require?

    Many thanks,

Long-term visa for Vietnam is not a problem. Most agencies can get you a 6-month or 1-year multi-entry visa via the back door, from $400US to $650US. Though sometimes there are little burps when VN Immigration holds back on some long-term visas for unacknowledged "issues".

Top to bottom, VN is a beautiful country, but you have to remember there are almost 95 million citizens in a country smaller than Thailand.

The Central Highlands are often mentioned, such as Dalat, which is not far from Nha Trang. Farther north is burgeoning Da Nang, as well as Hoi An and Hue. I have had numerous friends sing the praises of Ha Noi. I've not been there in years.

I think it would be wiser to do a month-long tour before settling down.

Thanks Kaoboi. I hear of Da Nang And Nha Tang and also dulat. As you said might be best to check out both countries as I want to settle for a while somewhere.

    Thanks again.

Years ago, someone mentioned briefly in a post that Haiphong, VN, was expat heaven.  French architecture and leafy boulevards, great food, decent nightlife, cheap prices, stunning nature, and really friendly women. Some overseas aid officials and other such types make their base there, apparently. I've been to nearby Hanoi and Danang, and they seem quite livable, with milder climates than Bangkok, Danang area offers mountains and the beaches. Immigration would be the problem with anywhere in VN.

Sounds nice. Why would Immigration be a problem?

  8. Posted this in Cambodia forum but edited for general response for VN experts.

    ....

    1. Been in bkk for 10+ years. From UK. Lived central bkk whole time.

    2. Had company here but closed down as was not doing well and expensive to run. 10k usd + a year.

    3. Will admit. Am bored of living in a 1 bed Condo in a middle of city.

    4. Have spent some time elsewhere in bkk but this has been my base.

    5. Visa. I have options but costs are Indeed high. I don't do visa exempt. Always get tvs or when had company had non imm b

    6. Am tired of bangkok. The vista, no nature or parks really (ok lumphini and Queen sirikit). But generally it is road's and Condos and malls. Of course I'm blinkered and I love the country. But its an issue now with visas and tired of spending time on that. Want a year or so away...... I know many places to live here but feel a move away is now timely.

    7. Nothing bad to say regarding thais. I've lived here a long while and it's comfortable. Can read write and speak basically. Would stay but something telling me to try some where else for a while...

    However........

    1. Zest for living here has gone bit like when I lived in London after 15 years just got weary and bored. Am from UK.

    2. Would love to stay thailand but feel like with the whole expense and issues with visa, work permits it might be good to take a step back for a while.

    3. Cambodia. Have been many times. Only PP. As many have said it is a hustling city and I lived there for a month but found it hard work. HCMC sounds great but I need nature for a while.......

    4. I read the SR forums and maybe I'm being wishful, but I have a feeling that it might be a place to try for a while. But it's hard to know. And people say VN is more beautiful.

    5. Went to HCMC 16 years ago last. Again..... Wonder if its a city that might tire me... Need a rest. Elsewhere in VN I don't know... Heard na trang(sp?) or Danang is 'nice'.

    What I want...

    1. A house. No more Condo for a while. Garden. Cat. Kitchen. Found some nice places in Sr real estate on FB. Don't know any areas in VN that I could research.... (

    2. Close to markets where I can buy just basic stuff. I am vegetarian. I could always get stuff sent from BKK also.

    3. Just a peaceful area away from central tourist areas (no issue but just want to be in a peaceful type area and away from glut of people peddling tourist stuff although am used to taxis in bkk lol so not that bothered if the guys are working just smile say no)

    4. Get more Involved with community, maybe volunteer, and maybe teach, whilst having time to work on personal projects I. E. Online work.

    5. Gym. Nature. Places to go for a bike ride weekend or trekking.

I'm in late 40s and single no responsibilities.

I guess I'm hoping for a reboot of sorts. Don't imagine it will be SReap or VN forever but if I can tick the above then I would give it a go. Learn basic Khmer or VN and live a less hectic life than central BKK.

What are your thoughts? I know how to avoid scams to some extent having lived asoke area for a long while.

Just want a Walden pond for a while.

Any advice appreciated. Not so much thailand vs Cambodia vs VN more like positive solutions regarding a sort of retreat in SR or VN... Or if this life is possible. I feel it is. Go there and see is a bit of an issue as I would rather just make a decision and give it a go. Rent out apartment here. Pack up and just go for it. Else need get a Thai visa again from and come back pack up. All a bit on the fence that. I have about a month to do the research and pack up here and go with at least a 6 month trial.... If it doesn't feel right take it from there.

I've checked and there seem some interesting businesses and more nature based activities in SR, VN I know less about. Outside HCMC. I feel like I could get more involved with the expat and local scene. And maybe better and easier to find work opportunities than in bangkok.

    Many thanks

    Sheryl? Re. SR?

    P. S. If anyone wants to jump in with places in VN that checks the 'what I want' list then that would be appreciated.

  9. Hi,

I posted this before so apologise however cannot see it listed.

I bought a 3750baht keyboard for music production from amazon UK.

I've ordered a lot of things eg books, vitamins from the UK and used post office track and sign. Typical value 1000 to 2000 baht.

Question; as this is a bulkier item (actually a min style 25 keyboard) will it be checked at customs? For import duty? If so, how would I be Informed.

What is the process as I don't want it lost!

    P. S. I don't want to use eps or DHL. Had issues sending stuff to the UK with them. Stuff from UK to Thai customs and postal service with track and sign seems to be much faster!

    Thanks

  10. Hi,

I ordered something for my music (small keyboard / midi controller type thing keyboard and dials knobs etc..! That kind of thing) from amazon UK. Because I couldn't find it here.

I've ordered a lot of stuff from amazon books vitamins etc.... And had them sent here. Value declared from sender. Usually 10 to 20 gbp.

This thing is large and will as usual  use track and sign from UK Post office to track item.

Question is. Will customs check it? Since it will be in a largish box rather than a jiffy bag. It costs 3750baht on amazon. Will I need to pay import duty? How will I know if its held and what's the procedure?

I would use DHL or EPS as I did recently to send a scarf to my mother. Value 2500 (Laos silk). Amazingly. UK customs held it for over 2 weeks and asked for 20 quid import duty. Plus EPS cost 1000baht. So I do not trust that if I send it that way it will be effective coming into Thailand. And a Compmete waste of time and money. Was supposed to get to UK in 4/5 days for her birthday.

So. I will use British track and sign which had always been fine.

For a large item like this, any advice on customs etc.... Duty..?

    Many thanks

Offering you 50-60% of what they could potentially sell it for isn't really that crazy.

I wouldn't be donating anything like that to a school, way too powerful.

Bang it on Thaivisa Classifieds, Baht-n-Sold, even Ebay unless you're desperate for the cash in which case take what you can get.

yeh I guess you are right. Plus school needs something more flexible like a big screen etc. not a laptop.

ok I'll take it as you said depreciation massive.

    Thanks

    all

  12. I agree

They are solid. Especially older models. However this one got a bit worn out and it took the shop weeks to sort it out. Which they did at a reasonable cost but said its kind of on its last legs. In the meantime I bought another second hand 2014 15 retina macbook Pro. This is same as the other one. They are mycoreferred laptop. Solid fast and lots of access low level (am programmer).

So therefore I now have two. I want to sell the older one. But they are offering me 20000baht.

I kind of agree. Keep it. But I have two now. Maybe I give to a school or something.

  13. Hi there,

Does anyone know of any shop that buys second hand macbook etc..?

I don't mean mbk as they are phones.

I tried a place in panthip but his price offer was far too low.

I thought about mac2hand website but its slow to get buyer and want to sell it fast.

    Anywhere in fortune anyone know?

Or panthip but not houks shop.. Price silly offer!

    Thanks

  14. Hi,

Am here on a tourist visa which expires in 2 weeks. I am enrolling into Bangkok University but the process will take more like 3 weeks. I have already done the 30 day extension on the tourist visa.

So I plan to take a break and spend maybe sometime away in Laos, which is where my tourist visa was issued.

Does anybody know if issuing another tourist visa in Vientiane would be a problem? Or should I go to sakanhavett for the visa?

As mentioned I have only one tourist visa in my passport.

    Many thanks for your help

  15. Hi,

My tourist visa expires June 23, Saturday. My error but am moving apartment tomorrow. Thought it was valid until 25th June as arrived in from Laos on April 25.

So, I want to get the 30 day extension. It was issued for 60 days. So I can get the 30 day extension as I believe.

Is there anyway to do this online? Or any other way in central Bangkok that I could get to quickly, or any service that will do it or do I have to go to chang wattana which is going to take most of the day and with moving not sure I can make it?

If I go monday 25 I presume they won't extend the visa as it will be 2 days after visa expires?

    Thanks,

    Paulinho.
