  1. I am running into this challenge too. Bringing my parents here was a plan, but it's turning out not being very feasible due to the climate, and my parent's social needs. It would also be quite the challenge when people start needing more care; you would have to arrange nursing services or other assistance all by yourself. In Western countries there is a whole government-controlled structure in place to provide care for the elderly, both at home, nursing homes or in-between residence types for senior citizens.

  2. Ok, Thank you thank you.

Did drink only 1 Amaretto, can you imagine? :o

And what's wrong with the traffic light timing. Thought it was just ok? :D

Oh sorry, I thought you were being sarcastic in the original post, about 'allowing at least 6 cars' :D .. 6 is not a whole lot yousee.

Should have realized that some people don't do sarcasm. :D

  3. Ok, so you put any remotely dodgy pics in an encrypted area, or better put then on a private site somewhere.

Then what are they gonna do.. It's just chatter.

And for those of us who have been messed up by these guys, it can be understandably kind of a radicalizing experience.

Well, how about trying the following line of thought; it's very calming, try it:

"Ok they're spending all of this time and effort on searching and harassing me, a totally innocent person... So that means that these resources are NOT spent on targeting ACTUAL bad guys, terrorists and the like. It may even mean that their methods are just not working.. So chances are, some of these c#$93s#ckrs are going to have their guts blown all over the place when an actual terrorist easily slips through their 'security'.. Then I'll laugh and yell: Hahaaa! That's for being such a moron and harassing the wrong people!!"

    Well, it works for me.

  4. Agreed.

I can sort of see where the Thai heart angle is coming from though: How do 75+ or so percent of Thais live: In rural areas, farming, exactly how this Westerner chooses to live. Westerners have the image of the big city life style, consumerism, basically just watch 5 hollywood movies and take the average.. That average will be very distant from the average Thai lifestyle. Now here's a guy who's consciously EMBRACED that lifestyle, he chose to 'go native', become like everyone around him, so "Thai" in the perception of the people around him. Typical case of 'Farang Lao'. :o

Also, the 'Thai heart' thing just comes from the BKK Post journalist or editor, who needed something that captured him in 2 words.

  5. A good friend of mine who has absolutely no money problems has a raggedy old Isuzu four wheel drive that he bought new. It is a rattle trap. It has 285,000 kilometers on it. I asked him when he was going to break down and buy a decent vehicle. He says when this one dies, I'll buy another one.

Hmm.. that could be a while.. When I go to the Isuzu dealer they have this mini hall of fame of people and their trucks that broke 1 million kms.. They get like a free T-shirt and umbrella and their picture taken. :o

If you take care of an Isuzu (or any Thai truck for that matter), they keep going forever.

Oh and on the Gold edition: I don't think it has a different engine from all the other ones.. The i-Teq engine that's been in the since the first minor facelift, now 2-3 years ago I guess.

  6. Sure.

On the front passenger seat only though.

One of our trucks is a Spacecab, and I sometimes put the child safety seat in front. It's not quite as secure as in a 4 door car or truck in the back, but a lot better than the kid being in any kind of vehicle without a seat. :o

Obviously you have to make sure there's no front passenger air bag. (Or have it disabled).

In the back of a spacecab it won't fly because there's no seatbelts there, so it can't be secured there. If you're creative though then perhaps you can weld something securely in place in the bed of the truck, and place a carryboy cover on top.. I donno, steel cables going straght through the bed and welded to the frame.. something like that. :D

  7. Well at least they don't call us FARANG.

Nice try. :o Well, maybe it'll work.

Chanchao, we are talking about returning US citizens and single male ones specifically.

I'm single, male and go through US immigration a lot.

Actually I probably go through US immigration a lot more than most Americans.

Excuse me for crashing your party with on-topic first hand experieces.

  8. Assuming you want GOOD places, not just expensive places, let me try:

D2 hotel near the Night Bazar? It's good but also good value.

Oriental Dhara Dhevi, perhaps not to stay as it's out of town, but to visit some of the restaurants, particularly the Chinese one.

The House is an excellent restaurant.

Then for good Thai food, spending big doesn't help. :o So for that I can refer to all the topics on 'eating in Chiang Mai'. :D

Spas... I don't know.. Anyone any thoughts?

  9. I just saw a short item of this guy (Martin Wheeler) on Thai TV. Short item of him explaining his life, farming, and so on in fluent Lao.. :D Had Thai subtitles with it. :o

He does seem very sincere, good spirited and hard working.

A bit of a poster boy for sufficiency economy, which I guess is why it gets the attention now, but that doesn't change that he's leading the lifestyle of his choice, and is being a positive influence on his environment.

I for one am happy that here is a very positive news item about a foreign resident in Thailand. Nice change from Russian gang members being arrested in Pattaya or so and so being deported to the USA for such and such.

  10. Well, don't lose hope yet Jingers, it may still happen. :o

I'm not a US citizen, but when entering I never had many untoward questions.

When leaving (or flying internally) I get the extra security check these days, no biggie. Most of the time I arrive with a couple Thai female collegues who also don't get a lot of hassle. (People go through immigration separately..) It's strange though that they DONT get the extra security check, even though we travel together. Doesn't appear particularly smart to me.

  11. I'm rather partial to RISK these days...

To be found on-line at www.conquerclub.com

There's free accounts with which you can play up to 4 games at the same time, and then paid for unlimited games concurrently. (So there's no limit to how many games you can play for free, just how many games concurrently). Loads of people playing on that site.

They've got the classic Risk map of course, but also loads of others, some with interesting bonus structures.

  12. Before the Internet we had Fidonet.

    And most uncivil it was.

And the moderators were power-craving nazis.

So then we said 'screw this' and ditched Fidonet for /\lien Net, where there were no moderators.

    /\narchy ruled. :o

Then we entered the Internet era, though there was no Web yet.

And God said, let there be News! And there were newsgroups, great ones like rec.travel.asia, soc.culture.thai, and alt.sex.fetish.orientals.

And it was good. Until spammers discovered it.

Then e-mail mailing lists came about, and then the Web, with online forums..

    And most uncivil it was

And the moderators were.. erm.. remarkably decent on this sub-forum. :D

  13. He's saying (or quoted as saying) all the right things though. From those things I'd say he qualifies as 'having a Thai heart'. (Or Buddhist heart, perhaps)

Because he happens to be standing in Thailand? - what if he was standing in a different geographical location?

No, because he declines the opportunity to rant at something, but instead displays a very typical Thai village attitude of minding one's own business, remains respectful but politely declines to get involved without making it sound like he's actively turning someone down. It's a respectful, honest, "non-commitment" while overall remaining polite and modest. As a result he gains a bucket of face, as this attitude resonates really well with Thais.

Compare that with how a typical Thai Visa poster would respond: he'd probably end up ranting and hollering and making the PPP guy lose face and as a result generate unnecessary negativity around him.

Should it not be a Lao heart?

Possibly, but then Lao and Thai culture, manners and attitudes are fairly similar anyway.

  14. I agree Ford/Mazda trucks are stellar quality. Unfortunately, most people don't agree, which normally doesn't matter, however as one of those most people may be buying the vehicle from you, the price will be lower.

Also, when considering financing and price and what bits the dealer throws in, there's just very little price difference between the various trucks.

If I were to buy a truck right now it would probably be the Nissan Navara or Mitsubishi..

(because Toyota should be due for a minor-change update, and Isuzu/Chevrolet is perhaps a year away from a completely new model)

I drove the Navara for about 5 meters yesterday (because a collegue couldn't get it in reverse. :D ) and I liked the feel of it. :o Just like with women, the first 5 seconds / 5 meters give you a good feel. :D

  15. Maxi Cosi should not be over BHT 10,000. Never seen one for 30K?! I have a Cool Kids one which is excellent as well, but Maxi Cosi is the brand that everyone in Europe's using so maybe they are safer? The Cool Kids I have seems to be pretty well built though, was BHT 4,000 for newborn - 1 year size (which is cheaper).

I think the cool kids one doesn't clamp securely to the seatbelt, so the belt pretty much runs through it un-locked. In a side impact it would go all over the place.

yeah gotta say that im 100% for the child seat but after looking it is hard to find a decent seat that is within cost range. yes i know what is the range?? but like people have said 25-35 thousand is crazy, for what standard of seat?

If you have money for a car, then you also have money for a child safety seat. Even more: If you have money for plastic bits on the windows, chromium crap around, cool mag wheels, a roof carrier wind catcher, lights and God knows what else, then you DEFINITELY have money for a child safety seat.

I think Central is the best place. (Not Robinson, though my Robinson experience is limited to Chiang Mai). Doesn't matter what branch or province, though it does seem that Central Chidlom has a lot of baby stuff including safety seats. Ask when their next sale / promotion is.

However, you may want to wait for 9 months or so and get a system which will last for a few years rather than changing all the time.

You mean, "assuming the kid survives his/her first 9 months of driving in Thailand unprotected"? :o
