The labour department see it differently, yearly contracts are seen as a way round giving full benefits and are treated in law as one continuous contract. I know an employer who got on the wrong end of this and had a nasty shock when someone left.

Totally correct and whats more the Thai labour Department do not distinguish between Thai of foreign labour so you should contact them asap

  2. What reason did they state for your termination and what is the notice period in your contract of employment ? As you have worked for between 3 and 6 years Thai Labour Law states that you are entitled to severance pay of 180 days minimum. but if you say they have only paid you 50% of your contracted salary then have you complained to the Labour Department previously  regarding failure to receive correct remuneration based upon contractual conditions ?

Thanks very much whatawondefulday, your post crossed my last one.

But please alleged defamation, only alleged.

I certainly think and hope that you are correct.

No Thai persons were involved............ Basically only Indian cowboys who object to my opinions on their failings on project engineering and management (including safety related issues) being exposed to Bangladeshi authorities - Actually my duty under Indian and Bangladeshi law.

Also I think under British Law. I forget what the CDMR has to say about the duties and responsibilities of British Companies working abroad, but I seem to remember that either that Reg. or another one says that British companies are legally responsible in the UK for ensuring the safety of staff and public on projects undertaken abroad.

Well as an ex Project Director I can understand perhaps the issues you had in ensuring compliance to the principles of Project Management and Engineering when dealing with Indians etc.  They can be sound as a pound, as many I worked with were,  but unfortunately they have an inherent believe that they always know better which takes a great deal of management expertise to ensure that they carry out their projects in an appropriate manner.

The alleged defamation occurred Bangladesh; with threats of being sued and jailed in India, Bangladesh & Thailand - all 3 at once apparently!

All pretty nonsensical really, but would be interested in the facts re Thailand.

I should add that the company threatening to sue me is a British owned International company with a subsidiary in India doing work in Bangladesh. The threat came from a company lawyer in Dubai!

I can't wait to expose them in court, but I have no doubt the "glass houses principal" will work its way into their thick heads in the very near future and nothing will happen except they have now annoyed me and .......

In that case the Thai judiciary will only consider a case of defamation if that defamation occurred in Thailand and/or  was a Thai company or citizen you were defaming elsewhere

Seems to me pretty much everything mentioned in this thread could be in any country in the world.

Thailand has it's own 'flavor', so does every other country.

Nobody can give anybody specific answers to the various questions posed in this (any many repeat) threads.

The question of money can be in any country. Many western men have met western gold digger females and many know men who have gold digger wives who have no hesitation to openly dig for more gold. And you can reverse the genders too. It happens in every country.

Finding a good woman / man and enjoying a long-term happy and successful  relationship is not easy in any country.

Somewhere along the way we all meet people and get acquainted, sometimes it looks good, sometimes we back away quick smart, same in every country. Trial and error.

And sometimes many people, me included, never learn their lessons, irrespective of whether it is English, French or Thai wives involved. That is why, us with experience,  can honestly say it is not just a Thai phenomena

I understand that rightly or wrongly, on some level, many women expect the man to be able to provide. I am fine with that as long as I am not being used. As I said I am not interested in an exchange of money for companionship.

I am 35, I earn okay money (about 90k AUD). I don't own a house. I could probably buy an apartment, or a house far from the city. With a partner earning a reasonable income we could definitely, but renting is better. Housing in Australia is RIDICULOUSLY expensive. I have no idea what housing is like in Thailand.

The whole point of going to Thailand is to find someone to build a life with. If she is going to free load off me and expect me to be a financial bonus for her then there is literally no point. I feel foolish asking these kind of questions, but if there is some chance I could find a genuine partner, its worth a shot. I am not getting any younger !

Well "If she is going to free load off me and expect me to be a financial bonus"  then that covers most women in any walk of life I'm afraid irrespective of nationality so you just better get used to it if you want a partner/wife.  If you can not accept that then live on your own.

  7. Well some posters were quick of the mark and have gone on to mention "decent woman"  or only bar girls.   Clearly one would need to understand upon which principal you define decent .   Whilst not married to Australians I  know 2 females, ex bar girls in the late 60's who were fortunate enough to meet and marry and have gone on to run their own major business in Thailand and Singapore. Also I have a good friend, poor as a church mouse with a big age difference who likewise married a bar girl and they are still together in the UK after 22 years. the point is whether these people are in the majority or otherwise is irrelevant you should never generalise by implying bar girls are not decent women.  I might as well say being English I consider Australians are not decent men which again would show bigotry and prejudice to the extreme

So what is decent ? someone who cares and loves irrespective of money or someone who has not had sex with numerous men before developing a long term relationship ?

But most Thai women that I know here would in my opinion not offer an opinion on the rights and wrongs of foreigners coming to find a wife,  rather wishing the ladies and their partners good luck.

This thread will turn into another series of rants by hypocrites I suspect.

Love the Durian!!!   I have 4 pieces in the fridge now!!

Wrapped in four plastic bags, and a new box of baking

         Soda on the same shelf.

No where near as vile as the smell of Parmesan Cheese!!

I agree and I think Durian smells nice. But each to his own as for my taste the vilest smell on the planet are Indian curries, disgustingly revolting.

Excellent comment and for all English and Scottish supporters this is the only game that should ever matter.  Shame the home internationals stopped due to some rubbish about the Wembley turf and goalposts being broken/stolen.

    hi there,

i friend of mine wants to send me his used smartphone from germany to thailand by courier service, do i have any duties to pay for that?

Its pot luck. Over the years I have ordered new ones which generally got through without any duty but twice I had to pay so guess depends on the declared value + depends on how near to month end for customs beer money + a bit of luck. However in general when things have been sent FEDEX then I have no issues but with DHL , well I think their friends and colleagues work in /Thai customs !!!

Business acumen is something that is seriously lacking here.

E-MAILS AND FACEBOOK  messages get ignored here almost all the time.

Businesses here are still living/working in the mid 20th century, they have not yet grasped modern media.

oh I think they have grasped modern media.  What they haven't grasped is good manners and professionalism. They are still in self denial about Thailand businesses being 1st class.  If there was fair competition here without so many restrictions on foreigners then you would almost certainly see a change - they would have to or they would fail.  However currently ignorance is bliss.

  12. Normal for Thailand. Absolute ignorance regarding business acumen.  I had a dispute that entailed me  writing via email to the other parties lawyers.  No response on 3 occasions. As it was regarding a debt I then used the services of a Thai debt collector. Strangely once these people visited the lawyers office I received payment immediately.
