  1. I have an "IDEA" that maybe others could contribute to or at least provide some constructive Criticism.

First, determine the area of contention; and I mean professional surveyors, the full <deleted>.

Secondly, We name this area "Friendship Park".

Now we proceed to turn this area of violence into a tourist attraction where two cultures combine rather than conflict.

Turn it into a corporation where both side have a 50-50 contribution and a 50-50 earning off what ever the region reaps.

Declare if a free trade zone, so both cultures can flog their wares and food vendors can provide a variety of selections from both sides of the border.

These are just preliminary ideas off the cuff, but imagine how it would appear on the international stage if two countries converted an area of dispute into an area of cooperation and cultural exchange?

Maybe I'm idealistic, utopian, or just plain crazy, but it would be a unique resolution to a commonly re-occurring problem, and at least people would profit rather than die. :)

you are forgetting about the greed factor ,otherwise a sensible idea.

  2. To any people stranded and need to be fairly near the airport - time wise and stay at a reasonable price and a pretty dam_n good value i recommend the Nasa Vegas hotel in Ramkampeng

It is minutes to the expressway and will take you straight to the airport in about 20 mins.

Its a really nice place and only 690 baht per night. If they had a pool this would def be classed as a 4 star hotel.

yes I agree I use that hotel every time I visit bkk and its only about 150B to the airport by taxi.

Abhisit is not a puppet. He's also not an iron fisted tough guy,

So he needs all his backers to help him, remind him of the rewards he'll reap if he just hangs tough and keeps his chin up - leaving the armies daycare facility for scared little kiddies would be a good first step.

the thai army couldn't beat a bunch of boy scouts why dont they send the thai women out against them like they did in phuket against the bermese they won then maybe they could win now because it seems the thai army couldn't beat time with a stick.

  4. ^ I don't think Thai-foreign comes into it. I have a pretty strong suspicion that this type of situation doesn't really fall into the area dealt with by the law/forces of the state. As ts said, most Thais, if they really wanted to do something about it, wouldn't go to the police.

thai dogs are higher on the food chain than the forigner and always will be.

  5. Yesterday in Bangkok I twice used a zebra crossing; one of the newer ones with traffic lights. When the lights changed some of the traffic did not even bother to stop, in fact one black Vios increased its speed past an already dangerous velocity to beat me attempting to cross the road, and in doing so almost hit me.

Every time I use these crossings I am extra careful as Thai drivers have little or no regard for the pedestrian.

pedestrian crossings any where in thailand are just a waste of paint

  6. its almost impossible to phone the cambodian embassy in BK and also difficult to go there and find them open but it is very easy to get a visa at the airport on arrival it will cost you $25 us. for a tourist visa for one month and it is no problem at all.I lived there for one year and you can actually get business visas from the supermarket I have also done many visa runs from thailand to cambodia and its never a problem to get a tourist visa at the airport for me or my thai girlfriend.

  7. Ok, answer to some questions:

If you have a bar etc and you order a certain amount, you get it. I don't know the amount, I haven't got a bar.

If the amount is NOT big enough you are not supposed to get booze.

NO, I do not have the text as reading THAI is difficult enough to not try reading law books...

Thai civil and commercial ones are worth buying as they are one page in THAI, other page in English.

NOT expensive either and worth their money.

As far as I know, if you are a restaurant+BAR and NOT a BAR + restaurant according to some... You can serve food, but you cannot serve beer without food. As we are farang we can always insist on supplying every customer with in those cases some french fries... Thai customers or ladies, you can supply with Plah Ja.. (G) or the fish or shrimp crackers.

I donot think you will have to sell suits! And note that there is never a legal obligation to EAT the supplied food.

Keep in mind that in the past one customer without food was enough to get fined!!!

you cannot get a beer at MKrestaurants during the restricted hours no matter what you order.

  8. Tata is the only serious cross over artist happening. IMHO

She hasn't broken big in USA but has taken a preliminary shot at it.

Has had some success in Europe in certain markets,

She did quite well in India, with Dhoom, she has movie tie-ins and Japan too.

Korea seems to like her and the other Asia areas are catching on.

Not my type of music, but she is good at what she does.

No one else that I have observed is more than a basic blip outside.

yes that was the point I was making.

  9. Does anybody outside Thailand listen to Thai music, watch Thai TV or Thai movies?

Yes they do, Japanese are especially interested in the music, but I never met anyone who is a fan of Thai TV. I used to listen to Thai music all the time at home, as well as musical films. There are some good foreign websites on Thai music and film. Not everyone comes here for the cheap drink and girls, thank goodness! If anyone has never seen a good luktung or morlam concert, something Thai's do VERY well, then they don't know what they are missing.

yes I believe Tata Young did a tour in Japan a couple of years back

  10. I am pretty sure there are better pastures for play in S.E.A. than hassle prone Thailand, where farangs are seemingly NOT wanted.

Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia and possibly cheapest of all for expats, according to a world survey, Philippines, well Manila.

may be we should make the thais happy and we should just leave I'm sure there are friendlier places to live.

  11. Police arrest alleged members of "leg-shaking" theft gang

BANGKOK: -- Thai police Tuesday announced the arrest of two Philippine men, alleged members of "leg-shaking" theft gang that robbed a Thai business man of Bt100,000 cash on Bangkok's Yoawarat Road on August 6.

Randy Capilipan Luste and Peter Paul Jr Dia Booroo Balladares, who were wanted by court-issued arrest warrants, were arrested along with Bt100,000 cash and several cellphone top-up cards on the night of August 31 while they were trying to steal again on Yaowarat Road, said Metropolitan Police Area 6 chief Major General Wittaya Rattanawit Tuesday.

was there not a thread about the police arresting the leg shaking gang months ago?

  12. Sounds like they have creatively created a new PR stunt! Its a bit difficult to get your head around what this is about, but I think maybe Thailand is hardly a place where you can invent technology or intellectual property, however in the markets you quit often see quite wonderful crafts, etc. So Abhisit and co are trying to aim at something that can be realistically be achieved in the country? OTOP was easier to understand and better targeted folks in the country IMHO. Trouble is Made in Thailand typically means low quality and not likely to last (my Sony car MP3 player was made in Thailand and did not last very long). I also had a Honda part Made in Thailand this week and it was cr*p; fell apart and I had to glue it back together. Ho hum.

I wonder how creative Abhisit was at Oxford?

On thing: Thais are very creative at getting money out of people!

    yes the HUBof creating scams

  13. Is this a joke? Are we going to have a VIP lounge, a Royal Orchid lounge and a shoplifters' lounge? Will it have a buffet?

Is this really AoT's answer to the growing problem of scamming at the airport?

Does AoT seriously believe this? The AoT said an investigation had shown that no AoT staff were involved in swindling tourists and hypothesized that the complaints resulted from arrested shoplifters complaining to the embassies for expenses paid for assistance in clearing their cases.

This is from "Not the Nation News", surely.

What do you expect them to say?

    Admit they are involved?

From the country where everyone from the Prime Minister down lies, even when there is incontrovertible evidence to the contrary?

This is not the LOS (Land Of Smiles) - it is (LOL) the Land Of Lies.

It is expected - nothing more, nothing less.

almost right but I think it should be changed from amaizing thailand to appraising slyland

  14. International Terrorist Selvarasa Pathmanathan arrested in Bangkok

    By John Le Fevre

    200px-Kumaran_Pathmanadan.jpg

One of the few known pictures of Selvarasa Pathmanathan

BANGKOK (thaivisa.com): -- Sri Lankan government and military officials are claiming that Selvarasa Pathmanathan, the newly self-appointed leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), has been arrested in Thailand.

Sri Lankan military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said, 54-year-old Pathmanathan "has been arrested in Bangkok. That is all we know at the moment".

However, Basil Rajapaksa, senior advisor to and brother of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, said Pathmanathan, better known as KP during his decades running the LTTEs arms and smuggling networks, was arrested on Interpol warrants late yesterday and flown immediately to Colombo.

Pathmanathan is wanted in connection with the assassination of former Indian prime minister, Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, and was the LTTE's chief procurer of arms during its 25-year battle for an independent homeland for Sri Lanka's ethnic Tamil minority.

Pathmanathan took over the terrorist group in May this year following a last ditched bloody battle between Sri Lankan government forces and the LTTE which resulted in the groups founding-leader, V Prabhakaran, along with all senior cadre, being killed.

The LTTE was blamed for hundreds of suicide attacks and more than 70,000 people were believed killed in fighting over the years.

In India he is considered a fugitive, with arrest warrants issued for him for the Gandhi assassination, as well as for violation of the Terrorist Act and the Indian Explosive Act.

Security experts had long suspected Pathmanathan was hiding in southeast Asia but despite the high profile nature of Pathmanathan, there was no immediate comment from Thai officials.

no wonder they are so confused! they don't even know who they arrested (or didn't)

check out this link, posted 2007

    same guy, different name :)

thats incredible if they caught him then how can they catch him again now did he escape? or may be he has a twin brother :D

  15. Boost for buffaloes

Reacting to fears that the Thai buffalo could be on its way to extinction, the Livestock Development Department and Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Veterinary Science are set to visit the Northeast in October to gather data for the animal's conservation.

The move follows concerns voiced by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn that Thai bufฌfaloes are being eradicated by the growing use of tractors in rice farming.

    Determining size

Theera Pattarapornnant, a researcher with the team that is developing a bodyscanning device for Thai buffaloes at the National Electronics and Computer Technology Centre (NECTEC), said yesterday that the NECTEC had consulted with the two agencies to establish a working team to determine the standard size of Thai buffaloes.

While the NECTEC was developing the scanner, the two agencies would visit the lower northeastern region and collaborate with local experts to select 250 model buffalo specimens and survey their physical aspects, Theera said. The survey would take about two years to gather the data, he added.

These fears are reflected in the growing number of 'sick or dying buffalo' emails being sent to people around the world.

    Oh, the humanity.

    excelent :)

  16. Lots of people in the U.S. said to close the border with Mexico when the first bout of swine flu broke out. Why should we badmouth Thailand because some doctors advocate a similar policy.

Closing borders makes NO SENSE once the virus is widespread in a country. I do fault the Thai doctors for this absurd idea. Also, I don't recall any elite US doctors or the CDC ever suggesting the US border be closed. Yes, there are always Mexican-phobic redneck types eager to demonize foreigners. I am talking about educated scientific elites. Yes there are stupid xenophobes in all cultures but one hopes that a country's elites are not like that. Sadly, some countries are like that. Frankly, I am more worried about the political fallout from this than the flu itself.

may be they want to close the borders so they can clean up on overstay money

  17. No need to be afraid of the Cambodian.

The Swedish will be delivering the new planes soon.

    :)

In all seriousness, history has shown in this region air superiority doesn't always bring victory when pitted against hardened guerilla fighters like those ex-Khmer Rouge on the Cambodian side of the border.

Thailand can only lose here, in the international media they are perceived as bullying a weaker neighbour and if they engage militarily they could get another bloody nose and lose face.

If the Thais step too far over the line the real military power in the region, Viet Nam, could come to Cambodia's aid and things could get quickly out of hand.

I just returned from cambodia last night after a 4 day visa run and the talk there is that Thailand is planing a military exersize in the disputed territory on the 8th which will probably lead to more clashes and the vietnamese are massing troops along their border with cambodia in order to come to the aid of the cambodians dont know if its true or not but thats the talk going around at the moment.

  18. If you qualify to stay here then you shouldn't have to do visa runs.

Plenty more places to emigrate to if you don't like the rules.

    You sound like a prize wanke_r - :)

    Just pointing out the reality.

Another potless visa runner who thinks he has a God-given right to remain indefinitely in Thailand I take it?

Did you get out of the wrong side of bed this morning Ober, or are you always like this ???? No need to be so unpleasant is there. Now I have no idea about the status of Hanzkneez but if you were referring to me as 'a potless visa runner' then perhaps you should bother finding out some facts before you cast aspersions. I don't see why I should tell you anything of myself, but suffice to say that at aged 40 I could retire should I so wish......in the UK as well as Thailand. And no, I have never inherited anything, its through sheer bl**dy hard work, 7 days a week, for years.

I don't think I have a God-given right to remain indefinitely in Thailand.....far from it......my point was (as I sure you would have seen had you bothered to read my posts) that it WOULD BE NICE if I could stay permanently in Thailand without all the current hoops you have to jump through. I know I do not have the right. Yes there are many other places I could choose to go, but Thailand is my second home at the moment, and I very much love the country and people, and I would like it to be my first. Sorry if that doesn't fit in with your "if you don't like it you can <deleted> off" mentality.

I'm just suprised and saddened that there are people on here who feel so superior to others that they come out with comments such as you have.

Anyway, I'm refusing to come down to that level so I shall sign off from this post by saying that I hope you continue to have a good life in the LOS and i hope that you manage to avoid the problems that will inevitably arise for you given your attitude.

    Best of luck

    well said

  19. Would he get a FREE tourist visa from Hull?

    Until June 4th. Yes.

I'm not sure if I am in the right place for this question....But at the moment I am in cambodia Sihanoukville and I want to go to PP to get a visa for thailand I have tried toring the Thai embassy but cant get through to them what I need to know is if the Thay embassy is closed for songkran and if so when does it close and when does it reopenbecause I dont want to get caught for a week in PP does the holliday is the same here as it is in Thailand does any body know please.

  20. Again - this thread is not about OA visas - it is about multi entry non immigrant O visas which allow 90 day stays. The rules and use are not the same.

sorry now I am confused do you mean an O visa is not for 1 year or is it for one year and you have to report to immigration every 90 days same as a non immigrant B

  21. 800K in a Thai bank is an immigration requirement for extension of stay inside Thailand for retirement. It has never been a normal Consulate requirement for visa issue. Only Consulate that had such a requirement that I know of was Singapore for a year or so - but that has ended.

so if I make a trip to perth every 15 mths I dont have to show 800k in a thai bank is that correct?

That is correct - but at any time they could require other documents for multi entry non immigrant O visa issue.

    thank youveeeeeery much
