  1. English proficiency is not helped by the daft article in yesterdays Bsngkok post ppresumsbly syndicated from America saying hand writing is going out of fashion and perhaps need not be taught. Of course the Thais would jump on this as a perfect excuse to cut a few classes

I didnt read the full article but maybe it was only cursive ( longhandas opposed to capital letters) that was in debate but even so lets slow down progress, the idea that all notes will only be exchanged on an electronic device is too scary to contemplate..

  2. Fiscal structures! Sounds like a review of the concept of a house being company owned. In the uk that would be defined as law evasion unless the company is legitimately trading. Big bucks for any government enforcing this as its only farangs use the device to appear Thai owned.Imagine if all company owned property were invedtigated and made to pay a property tax.......

  3. Its standard dude,

Everwhere has a different exchange rate. You just have to plan ahead when dealing with 3rd world currencies . Try buying/selling baht in a western country eg at a UK airport.

They dont want baht, they dont want to deal in it, however they will deal if they can make a fat profit on the transaction..so the rate is miles away from the rate in Thailand. Laos, Cambodia same same.

  4. feng shui is based on common sense and aesthetic values. people however have personal preferences which are of course equally valid.

If one can believe the moon has a gravitational field that influences people as well as the tides then why should the earth spinning not have an effect on a sleeper. I may be imagining it but I feel lighter headed when my head orientates with the spin and the blood drains to my feet fractional differences only and it may be because of the position of the moon not the spin direction. Anyway I sleep better if my head is to the east. Some people may hate this and orientate north south which means the spin factor is reduced but earth magnetism is more effective.

Only the really thick skinned are unaware of such bodily niceties but them they have counter measures in Beer chang and cigarettes..

  5. casual reading suggests that most food is suspect these days. Organic apparantly not. But here is a summary as I understand it:

Goats milk is better for humans than cows milk (something to do with the size of the fat globules making goats easily digested)

Soy loads up estrogen so testosterone levels fall and we all become jaffas ( seedless).

Cows milk is so treated it is now heavily affected by chemicals ( first to neutralise the mastitis then to neutralise the mastitis killing chemical)

Growth hormone is fed to livestock so eating the appropriate foods will stimulate growth even in 2nd generation.

Cows are fed with chemicals to boost milk production, which works but doesn't increase the buttermilk so the milk becomes thinner with increased volume. I dont think a growth hormone is involved here.

Orange juice contains fructose which is bad for you and should be taken in moderation.

Thailand stopped school milk a number of years ago diverting the money to concreting earth roads.

Thai milk does not come from these brahman cows we see plodding around rural areas. It comes from Friesians etc like the rest of the world.

What other idiotic posts have I read today? enough for now Maybe someone could add the gene connection and other good posts such as lactose intolerance in asians for example to my list

  6. 3000 baht annoys....

Get a life. 3000 on a motorcycle purchase or a trip to 711. But what of the condo cost !Strike me pink, why sweat the small stuff.

Are you the guy who collects the satang change 100 satang =1 bath and then found you couldn't use it?

I accept that the information is useful but as the poster said for all intents and purposes the purchase price does not include clean title to the utilities. What he is saying is 'just pay it.'....

  7. The ability to look at others seems a thing of the past. Now some people do what they like and think such liberal views should be acceptable.

Considering what The Thai think of an official photo just look at a few of their photos; the prefered Thai dress for a Thai official is to look like an admiral. You can opt in a photo shop to have any number of uniforms superimposed, all way over the top in my view but its the way the Thai does it.

I once left a photo guy for 20 minutes and when I returned he had airbrushed my face to look like a choir boy. I said it was no good not same me old man his reply was ok in Thailand.

Have some respect or try Bognor Regis in UK. They provide hankies to put on your head.

  8. I sympathise with the ruling to let the market value the bhat. There is no way little Thailand can control the market forces when US$ etc are being dumped here.

However the announcement smacks of lack of understanding when it should be used to guide popular opinion. Unfortunately all we have is a previous reccc toThais to take advantage of a strong Baht. And invest outside Thailand.

  9. Foreign investment pushes the baht higher and this month the increase in permited Bath investment is up 207%. An enormous amount.

The flip side is how will these companies export with noncompetitive baht . Have they been given any assurances.

The logical assumption has to be that this is not exportable business but either infrastructure or pure investment in financial products. Lets hope the Thai mint is having to print money as that would not be putting pressure on the baht .

  10. The strong economies will have massive inflation as a result of their printing money. This option is also available to Thailand. They could use the money to finance their massive infrastructure plans.

At present a false picture is being presented because the weakening currencies are being invested in strong Thai baht. This will continue while the baht is the stronger currency; it will also continue to make the baht stronger.

When will this flow of investments end? Forecasts are that maybe 2015/6 will see the reverse fund flows. We don't know what the thai authorities are doing but I can't believe they are ignoring the move of baht exports from the traditional role of manufactured goods and tourism to finance related products.

Of course the article tells us there is a concern but for sure they are not going to confide in us, the general public.

  11. Want to know where you can go for only 2000 baht. I seem to get through bout 1000 the first hour accelerating thereafter. One day someone will find me unconscious hugging the bowl (of an ATM)

What I can't understand is how so frequently I get back with nil baht . Has the last bar accepted part payment .Beats me. The wife worries if I have money...

Reminds me of my aunty who used to say" we didn't have a nice time but at least wrong didn't spend any money"

  12. In general thais keep water throwing to working hours. The idiot tourists dont know when to stop so you shower and change go out 9pm to find a drunk alien still tossing water..

How can police be impartial when convention suggests you can throw water but not paste at a cop. ahem.evening all.are you selling intoxicating liquor....splashhhhhh!

  13. The grass is greener has morphed into ' you're ok I'm not ok'. People with high emotional intelligence can see through the personality differences and with luck without saying ' there but for the grace of God go I'

Unfortunately the type of human traditionally considered cannon fodder is perceptually impaired and is breeding faster than the rest.

Thats what they tell me. Dont understand it myself....!

  14. Have you EVER driven here ? Perhaps folk in minivans ''survive'' cos US who do drive here and see one of these rides in the mirror IMMEDIATELY get ready for the shit. I have been forced off the road by these so called ''professionals''. rolleyes.gif

Just to make it clear, I agree that there are some very bad drivers here, of both cars and vans. In fact, many, many more than in the UK. But, they are still in the minority. Yes, I see crazy van drivers. But for each crazy one I see, I see countless others driving safely. If they were ALL as crazy as you make out, then there would be a lot more accidents. With all these crazy drivers you claim are here, how come the death rate is still below the world average? So less deaths here, so driving can't be as bad as you make out.

It's still the most dangerous place in the world per capita (on the roads)

Someone working in a hospital in Pattaya said official statistics are 'managed' and there is no way the carnage during Songkran fits with the official version.

  15. Thai drivers are so inexperienced that they dont realise different vehicles have different handling characteristics. They think all same same. Today I think I am in porsche car, vroom vroom.

I saw a Top Gear program comparing acceleration and stopping times of various vehicles. It was terrifying how long cheap runabouts take to stop, never mind the ability to take corners...........

    Noo same same, upto you
