  1. You'd think they can do all that by simply starting from the momet the tourist is

entering Thailand at the airport or other entry points, why wait for the hotels

to forward lists of guests? and what about people entering the kingdom and

do not go to a hotel?? like, Duh...

Every person entering the country has to report their whereabouts. The hotel system does it for you. Stay with a friend and you are eligible for a fine if not reported to immigration. Of course there are leniencies for example staying in one place and confirming every 90 days, not straying outside the province of registration etc.

People dont realise that Thailand is like a host of mini countries and they dont share information. If you change province for more than 24 hours you have to notify the immig or police. Few people do and few are caught but rules are in place to fine you.

  2. A simple natural cure is papaya leaves crushed and juiced. Tastes horrible but they work. Juice the leaves and take for a week - all gone.

Or don't take the leaves and after one week....Gone.

Basically Dengue lasts for about a week anyway - (So many quack medicines rely on the patient recovering natually themselves and then claim to have had a hand in it!)

A good doctor will proscribe drink lots of water and take paracetemol ( not nurophen as NSAIDS thin the blood)

  3. The bank of Thailand is bowing to the elite who love to see their wealth apparantly increasing when converted into the US dollar etc; it is also good for the elite to buy italian marble for their houses or garages and the new imported cars. Basicly imports are cheaper by about 10% which is good for all those manufacturers stocking up.

When everyone has bought all they need then the turn of the sellers will resurface. All that Thai made produceis now more expensive to sell as the eager market has to find more dollars to buy the baht.

So the Thai monetary system will get stuck in a stop go policy while the elite work out that in fact they dont want to convert their ready cash into dollars as the dollar is declining in value.

Unfortunately the only way out is for all countries to devalue at the same speed then global trade will not be affected in pricing although the peoples ability to pay will suffer.

The easiest way for Thailand to devalue is to print money. This doesnt mean give the money to banks as it could be used to improve the infrastructure as in building high speed railways etc ( er have I not heard about that already?)

So there we have it Thailand is anticipating creating money. Now what about the interest rates? Keep them high it pleases some of the people and even attracts foreign funds, also it helps control the rampant inflation that iarrived with the printing of money ( the first batch was paying off government debt then followed by flood repairs...). I reckon the last few years prices have jumped 15% but of course not according to the government.

There is plenty of time to play catch up later... and then the UK pound and US dollar etc exchange rate will stabilise.

Apparantly the real pound sterling rate will go to 42!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and the dollar?????????????????

  4. its about time people grew up. No one wants to see the inside of a slaughter house but we happily chomp our way through animals with faces.

meat is meat and any kind is food for a meat eater. guinea pigs, rats dogs cats goats horses monkeys deer antelope birds etc which one tastes best?

Here we are with a world foodshortage and folk want to force their own criteria on other people. selfish self centred ignorance. The best quote above was from the person who suspected their wooden table was made out of cardboard. yep.

Welcome to the real world where we want cheaper but are not prepared to compromise quality; its a perpetual fight to give us what we want but cheaper and getting us to accept it......................

In Thailand they don't eat pigeon. They think they are dirty birds and would prefer rat anyday.....

  5. coffee naturally burns up alcohol, try strong coffee after a knee bender, you recover a lot faster..

This is totally untrue and an irrisponsible statement. Ok certain foods can speed up the metabolism, as can low temperatures. But the reality of a quick fix coffee or caffeine is that it produces a high and so gives the appearance of neutralising the alcohol. Sorry when the caffeine wears off ( is metabolised) then the alcohol reasserts itself. The body metabolises caffeine much faster than alcohol.

  6. Prostitution is an emotive word. To see a prostitute in a western country is to see a reflection of all that is bad in society. To see a bar girl in Thailand is totally different; here is no stigma, shame, self consciousness on either side; normal people getting on with their lives.

I agree that some ladyboys camp it up and manage to reach that level of conspicuousness that make people cringe. but they are different. They reach a level of ostentation that is pure theatre, so even they are not worth putting in a sensitive article that the main post here is trying to achieve.

  7. This ruling is as contentious as a recent Pattaya thread in which the local council said they owned or had responsibility for the pavements.

Now we have ownership and police compliance maybe we can sue someone for pavement accidents, you know the ones, when you fall in a hole or get run over avoiding street vendors or get stabbed in the head by a street vendors awning.

Actually I never drink at VW bars, noodle stalls etc etc so I am happy if they disappear, unfortunately their absence will leave a vacuum to be filled by something worse ( freelance ladyboy hookers for example)

Dreams of flying pigs ( woops, no reference to our honorable incorruptible police)

  8. political announcements normally mean the opposite. So what is the announcement a diversion for? I suppose the baht over printing needs to be disguised as something so an announcement as above means they are pretending the baht printing is not happeneing.....confusing or what.

I just hope the thai printing presses are approx matching those of the developed western world ( Oh yes and japan too) in which case they can float the baht without too much changein valuation. That would make the current strengthening a temporary blip.

Word of advice for a poster wondering about transfering cash to Thailand. It is normal to have a major chunk of your money in the country where you live. That chunk is then free from currency volatility. You may have left it too late.

  9. If the dollar, euro and yen were to crash it would not just be a Thai problem .... it would be global. And they should think themselves lucky they didn't have the economic genius of Gordon Brown costing the nation a fortune selling off gold when the price was rock bottom. Come to think of it Thailand must be swimming in gold only most of it is hanging around hi-so necks.

Amazing that any economic discussion requires the wheeling out of the boring tired old story about Gordon Brown and his gold. zzzzzzzzzzz

When the major currencies lose their value one option is to walk away another is to devalue to keep parity. Thailand devaluing would easily be done by printing more baht such as is needed to pay for their hair brained capital projects...

Walking away from the $US doesnt make sense as the per capita spending in America makes trade an essential process. Trade can continue if the world walks away from the dollar but will Americans really buy Asian goods using yuan.

Its a scary future so lets forget it and talk about Lamont and Brown and other past chancellors of the UK exchequer after all we are so old its the only thing we can remember........

  10. Patong. Valuables were stapled into an old brown envelope and put in the reception desk drawer. Stayed there 6 months never any problem........................

Samui: a bar doing visa runs used to have dozens of passports in a cardboard box behind the counter....

Pattaya: getting my mobile unlocked. Stall in shopping mall gave me a receipt which was a business card, he wrote Sll on the back.

All these stories about multiple breakins and drugged people seem to belong in a different world to the one I live in................... I guess because I frequent mum and dad type establishments not what look like temp staff.

    Touch wood...............

  11. The cat is out of the bag early, that means there will be all the rhetoric from the wise and wonderful. What they should have done is copy the wes:

Margaret Thatcher was so insistent on her policies ( later known as Thatcherite) that even the UK civil service was thinking right wing... 'Get on your bike' ruled

Tony Blair nearly toppled the monarchy and certainly removed the final legal( conservative) veto from the House of Lords by retiring some conservatives and appointing sympathetic to Labour in their place. pawn the bike and live off the nanny state new socialist dawn ( Dawn a single parent got free housing, Dawn fell over and got a wellfare officer on her case, Dawn got married and men got maternity leave...) all in the interest of party continuity, a new constitution by stealth. The joke was on labour as Blair in fact moved the Labour party from left wing to central politics while increasing the welfare state.

let him who is without guilt cast the first stone

Yes Thatcherite policies are even popular in China.

The top 20 utilities have been privatised!

Meanwhile in yellow land in Thailand the yellows are bitterly opposed to privatisation. They just want everything in the hands of the few.

Ain't feudalism great? It's what you came here for innit?

You caught me on the hop by mentioning yellow. of course you're right yellow is feudalism the wierd thing is faranges with their anti feudal attitudes should be red, but ee hech they dont arf dislike Thai reds..............

if we get past Thaksin who is/not going to murder us all in our beds we have a progressive party leading SE Asia. and its red.

  12. This is the route to another coup, and the reason behind the last.

It is well known Thanksin does NOT know when to stop and has

an ego of monumental proportions that must constantly be fed.

This is not about the poor getting a leg up or "Red Democracy".

This is about clan power and the ambitions for revenge and

power accumulation and use of one liege lord and his clique,

to displace the old guard, for their own profits.

Sure they use new means, but to the same old face making ends.

eee its lovely scansion.....not sure about the content but its a pleasure to let them words trip off the tongue. One observation it would be better ammended to """ that must be constantly fed""""" ..

  14. They can export me to Thailand any time they want - the sooner the better laugh.png

I wonder if it's possible to go back to UK, act ill and infirm and request as a money saving exercise to the British Government, they send me to be cared for in Thailand.......all expenses paid?

Probably would be wise to hide your assets first.

"Probably would be wise to hide your assets first" (posted by Kennedy not me)

    They're already hidden!

    biggrin.png

But I cant remember where, which is why I'm in this mess.

  15. Yes, but I really do think the vast MAJORITY of offices are following the national rules for this matter. Another wrinkle is there are offices which accept combo applications (this is the first case I've ever heard of accepting NO combo applications) but incorrectly insisting that the bank account portion be seasoned. That would be the more common issue.

A year or so ago Lopburi immig had the same attitude. I thought it was a big joke at the time but it caused big problems for an Australian caught in the net.

  16. The time is not yet. Let's be precise on this important moment in the history. Mayans were scientists who's year started on winter solstice.

The exact moment for this is today 11:12 UT. That would be 18:12 in Thailand.

I read that it was to be at 10:05, but it didnt say which time zone. The world is not going to end but we are all going to be caught up in the age of Aquarius which means love and peace will wonderfully come to us all. Anyway by 10:30 no one had come to my door bringing love and peace. I thought maybe if I left the front door open. This also hasn't worked so I shut it again. maybe I should start again at 18:12 but there will be mosquitos by then. Is this 'end of the world' going to be a one off or will it happen again tomorrow?

  17. Oh, the thread has run out just as it was getting interesting...

firstly you need to maximise your values. A with profits plan will have bonus' added every year until the SRA ( Selected retirement age assumed to be 27/1/14). If you cash in for an annuity or transfer before SRA you may lose out on significant bonus' and also be hit with an early surrender charge. Years ago the biggest bonus was the last one but more enlightened companies have spread an estimate of this final biggy over the life of the plan. Your Phoenix contact has estimated only a slight increase in value between now and SRA but then she is prohibited from assuming growth of anything other than regulatory figures.

You say you are prepared to take a loss and mature the policies early. I suggest you find out more about the bonus payment structure particularly the terminal bonus before you decide. The maturity value (probably the same as the transfer value) is the one used for the 18,000 trivial pension, so you no longer qualify

When the plans are matured, which can be on different dates, there will be a fund of which 25% can be paid to you in cash. The remainder is used to buy you an annuity which is calculated on the yield from government gilts. Today government gilts are paying an absurdly low yield and so your pension will also pay an absurdly low yield. There is a move afoot in government circles to improve the annuity (yield) from a pension fund. You need an expert to tell you how this is coming on as maybe 2014 will have totally new and better rules ( by 2014 the government may be worried about inflation and have put up interest rates thereby improving the yield, who knows?) You need to get quotes for the final annuity from Phoenix and from an independent. The reason for this is because the independant should provide a better rate BUT Phoenix may have a policy clause guaranteeing certain internal calculations which do not apply if you transfer to an independent.

    So in summary:

Will you get a bigger fund if you hang on?

Will you get a better rate if you hang on?

Will you get a higher annuity from a transfer to another annuity provider or from staying with Phoenix ( in house).

    These decisions are dependent on:

    Phoenix policy conditions

    Movement in interest rates

    Government policy on annuity calculations

    good luck

  18. I heard about a guy on a motorcycle in Bangkok breaking the law ( no helmet?)

he was stopped, asked where he was going, and fined.

Further on he was stopped, asked where he was going, and fined.

A third time he was stopped, asked where he was going, and fined.

Ruefully he realised giving out his route was probably a bad idea as the police already have smart phones and were sending his photo ahead. mmmm instant short term roadblock!

I guess this story has only just arrived in Phuket.....................
