  1. The guy said that the router should be fine and the firmware seemed to be good but there's a problem in some areas , maybe due to TOT lines and True service, not sure but he was happy to oblige a swap.

Was he talking about your old D-Link or your new Linksys?

I went for the Linksys but could have taken an equal priced SMC if I wanted.

Which Linksys model did you get? What was the price?

FWIW I tried three (3) different D-Link 2640-BT models on four (4) different DSL lines (TOT, True 2x, CSLox) in four different locations and had the same issue across the board. So this model does have serious problems and its not due to WiFi adapter drivers or local wiring .

He was talking about the D-Link. He said it like he'd come across the issue before.

The Linksys has been up and running since 5 yesterday, no issues whatsoever.

    It's a Linksys Wireless N Home ADSL2+ Modem Router - Model WAG120N

I used Linksys a lot in the past, used to run a small IT business, and have always found them excellent. The Cisco label has become a lot more prominent too.

It was 1,750B, 500B dearer than the D-Link.

  2. Hi,

    Just an update.

Went to Panthip. No problem getting replacement. I had all the bits and box was intact. The guy checked I'd updated the firmware and when he saw I had he just said "Pick whichever one you want!".

Now before anyone creams themselves, I paid the difference :)

But I have to say it was great service. 4th floor Panthip, hard to explain exactly as the escalators have been reversed since Iast went there. But go up the escalators on the Rachathewi side and then turn left at the 4th floor one, the shop is in front of you. I think the bag I have is from that shop and it says Seatek Systems and SM - Smart Modern Co. Ltd. I'll definitely use them again.

This is going out on my Linksys router. Very pretty piece of kit, setup cd didn't work but just manually setup and had no problem.

We'll see how things go over the long term :)

Anyway, thanks for the replies, the problem appears to be a quirk but happy to report it has been resolved, hope this post helps others.

  3. Hi,

    Thanks for the reply.

I've decided to bring it back and exchange it for a Linksys model, slightly more expensive but I can do without the hassle.

I got most of the information I used to try and get the router to work through Thai forums using Google Translate.

One suggestion was to enable Keep Alive. Didn't work for me.

The other one was to update the firmware with ones from this page - http://www.dlink.co.th/support/support_detail.asp?idproduct=439

There was a trick to getting the firmware to work. I renamed the file to a simple one like "dlinkfirmware1" put it in the root of my C drive and used IE to do the update through the routers interface.

I updated with the oldest one first and then with the newest one. the middle one was a Beta version of the newest one.

    This didn't work either.

This is a nice router, decent interface, easy setup, but from now on Linksys all the way.

    All the best,

    John

  4. Hi,

I bought a D-Link DSL-2640BT yesterday in Panthip to replace the Billion Sky router I got from True.

The setup was easy and I was connected to the web in minutes.

The problem is though, the connection to the Internet drops every hour or so. It only comes back after rebooting the router.

I can connect to the router when the Internet goes down(so LAN, both wired and wireless working fine) but not to any webpages. The diagnostics say - Wireless & ADSL Sync Passed, Ping Default Gateway & DNS Failed.

I've updated the Firmware and played with a few settings(Keep Alive) but there's been no improvement.

Has anyone used this router on True and if so were there any settings you needed to change get it working properly?

    Thanks

  5. You just do not renew the one year extension of stay. It is only required if you enter on a foreign passport and want to stay longer than the normal visa exempt time. People cease to continue extensions of stay all the time so nothing unusual about it. Expect you are talking about when you visit immigration for extensions of stay? Just say she is Thai (entered on Thai passport). Should not have to go beyond that.

Okay, that is what I thought, but we have went to the same immigrations office for several years now and they know she has a present visa in her American passport. I didn't know how they would respond if we say we switched to her Thai passport. Is that a problem with them?

A Thai Citizen holding a Thai Passport cannot be refused entry into Thailand.

That she has a second Passport, with or without a Visa, is irrelevant and is not the responsibilty or concern for the Thai Immigration Officer - Dual Nationality is accepted in Thailand.

    Patrick

My daughter is half-Thai and we've been told, from officials in Immigration, that she'll need to opt for one nationality or the other by the time she is 20. So they're telling us dual nationality is a no-no.

We've also been told, unofficially, that it's easy to get around it - just don't use the other passport in Thailand.

Also, if questioned, why not say the American passport was lost/stolen?

  6. Rubbish article once again :whistling:

Seems to me they finally dealt with the taxi touts/mafia.

Even to the point you can't use the elevator around door 8 to move your luggage cart up to departure level if you need to connect to a domestic flight. I guess it is to prevent the touts to reach international arrivals doors from upper levels!

As a connecting passenger you need to find an other way to get to check in level

I have to agree, the airport itself is a very well organised operation through my own experiance. Airports around the world are a rip off regarding food and drink as for people sleeping in Airports I don't think I have visited an airport where someone isn't asleep.

The problem regarding Taxi's is not the airports fault its the taxi licencesing authorities issue.

To blame the airport is unfair IMHO as its beyond their control.

Aren't airport taxis a problem at a lot of major airports?

I always remember stepping off the plane at JFK and the first thing I saw was a billboard warning about dodgy taxi drivers.

And to say that every bit of Thailand's public transport system is defective is a bit of s atretch. BTS. MRT. BRT? Slow sleeper train is nice too. Have I missed something, been using the BTS for 8 years and never had a problem.

  7. Hi,

I have a non-immigration O visa based on being married to a Thai.

    I'm Irish, 35 years old.

I got the visa in the UK prior to moving back here in April.

I now have a job at a school here and they want me to get a Non Imm B so I can get a Work Permit.

I've read that I can have a Non O and still get a work permit, but initially the school said that wasn't possible.

Now they say I can do it but I need 450K in the bank to renew the Non O. This is confusing me as I didn't need to show any bank statements to get the visa originally.

So now the really confusing bit - My missus went to Immigration in Chaeng Wattanna and they said Non O cannot have a work permit, I must change to Non B.

I'd like to keep my Non O as if I have a Non B then I'll lose it once I leave my job. And I believe it's quite difficult to get a Non O in Asia.

Can anyone set me straight on what I need or do not need, can or cannot do in this situation?

  8. Global media finally are beginning to catch on.

CNN Sunday finally pointed out Thaksin is financing and is the organizer of the Red Shirts in their siege of Bangkok, is fully funding them and it. CNN had Prof Peter Langland on air, a specialist in Thailand of the London Metropolitan University to state that it's contradictory that the Red Shirts demanded an election, Abhisit agreed to even move up the election, then the Reds made new and additional demands which forced the government to recognize the Reds are argumentative (politely stated), causing a GE to be removed from the table.

Simultaneously, the BBC finally has revised its reporting to state that it is simplistic to state this is a class war between rich and poor, that Thaksin and his return is the object.

Global media are beginning to get into the realities of Thailand.

Do you have a video/article/source to this? I just want to see. Thanks.

Can't find the actual video mentioned, but this is a link to a cnn article that analyses the situation and clearly points to Thaksin's involvement - http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/...dex.html?hpt=T1

The BBC site just has the usual "Ruling Elite vs Rural Poor" line, maybe someone can post a link to their revised view

I think that's a fairly definitive answer - unless there's some amazing photoshopping going on there

Thank you. As said above, it's not a bad job. Whoever has done it had a huge number of photos to choose from and/or a lot of time to get it done, which would suggest it was done by someone close to him. That would of course beg the question - why?

He's running out of cash to pay for the flights? He's looking different so he doesn't want anyone to see it? Something else?

Whoever did the photoshop job, didn't do it in 5 minutes. So there should be some serious reason behind it.

I take that back. After a close investigation, the photos without Thaksin are a clearly bad photoshop job.

Photo 1: the fence behind him is copied from the right side of the guy in white shirt. The door and part of the background is mirrored from the other side of the door.

Photo 2: Look at the building just left of the signboard. It's considerably lower than the rest of the buildings. It's rubberstamped in.

Photo 3: The patterns on the sand and especially in the wet part of the sand, near the "wave" are mirrored, then smudged.

Therefore - these photos are no proof that the photos with Thaksin are fake. They are merely speaking volumes about how badly someone wishes they were fake to the point of erasing him from the photos.

But fellas, when you depart on such a mission, make sure that you do your job right, or don't do it.

And remove the date stamp for christ's sake. Without blowing the photo up I didn't notice it, but once I clicked on it (unfortunately after sending the above blunder), it was an immediate clue that the photos on the right are tailored.

For me the photo in front of temple is still suspicious though. He would have had to lean forward for this shot. He doesn't seem to, though.

I have to disagree completely with you.

I work with photoshop daily as a graphic and web designer, so do plenty of photoshopping things on and out of photos. But I thought I'd double-check so sent these images to a colleague in Ireland.

He agrees that Thaksin has been photoshopped on to these images.

After that people can believe what they want but if the reverse is found out to be true my hat is off to the person who did the job.

  10. The person asking about the "claimed" doctored photos. Here are links to them...

    Thaksin Picture 1

    Thaksin Picture 2

    Thaksin Picture 3

    Thaksin Picture 4

A small but very vocal online community started questioning if the photos are real. But I personally don't see anything funny accept the fact they are date and timed stamped but after looking at other photos posted on his FB page, I can see it is not uncommon for the date/time stamp to be on.

Thank you for the links. Whoever said that they are "photoshop, and a very bad one", please step forward.

I did try to examine them, and admittedly the photos are of far too low resolution to make a definitive judgement, but the lighting does match the overall photo light directions and intensity, and any shadows that could give them out aren't there. The fact that object and background are in focus could be due to large aperture (or is it small aperture? high F), which would match high lighting conditions in which sunny photos were taken.

Only one that I have some doubts about is the photo in front of temple. The photographer clearly was on his/her knees when taking that photo, trying to get the temple in. For this photo to look credible, he would have to have leaned forward, but I am not sure whether he did. Also there is some chromatic aberration on this photo, on the right side of his shirt, which is not on the other photos, but then again, it could just be cheap lens.

Said that, I don't see an evidence of "a bad photoshop job". Obviously a "good photoshop job" of someone having hundreds of photos to choose from and loads of time on his hands could have produced photos that would be indistinguishable from the real ones.

  11. News of the day: Reds block BTS, highways. Soldiers just stand by after all that talk of restoring order and the rule of law. The Red have realized that they could do pretty much anything they want with impunity.

Why not? The rich and elite have been doing anything they want with impunity for 50 years, whats a few weeks of the poor and impoverished?

    A week?

    Well for the Red-Shirts that's 7000baht a head.

    Democracy my arse

  12. What are the yellows??

    Burr,

the Yellows are/were the crowd the Bangkok Bandits wheel out when they lose an election. Unlike the Reds, the army does not shoot them when they occupy an airport, etc.

Most of the farang posters here seem to be right-wing authoritarians who have not a clue about democracy. In a real democracy, ultimate political power is the will of the majority of people, as expressed at the ballot-box. It is not some elevated elite possessing unlimited money, troops, tanks, guns, & English-language newspapers.

I see one of the latter has dubbed the Red-supporting majority of Thailand as 'terrorists'. Nice one for all authoritarian anti-democrats. It's a simple 'law 'n order' situation, so bring on more firepower! Were Adolf Hitler & Joe Stalin alive, they would be cheering behind you.

By all means let the legal attrition against Ole Squarehead continue. Meantime, howsabout a free election, dudes?

I get really angry when I read ignorant comments like this.

Oldgit - you have absolutely no idea, do you? Were you around when Thaksin was in power? Were you paying attention? Thaksin was more of an authoritarian than Abhisit will ever be. Do you honestly think Thailand was ruled democratically when the red hero was in power? Did you completely miss the intimidation of the press and the opposition, the manipulation of the courts, the use of goverment powers for private profit, the extra-judicial killings? Have you ever read Thaksin's words about democracy while he was ruling the roost? Not exactly a hero of democracy back then and hardly one now ... more like a hero of hypocrisy. I am hardly a right wing authoritarian, but I despise the red shirt leaders who are nothing but a bunch of thugs and wouldn't know democracy if they were choking on it. They are in it for themselves - period! The rural poor have legitimate beefs, but it is sad that their cause has fallen prey to the likes of Thaksin and all the other scumbag red leadership.

By the way, dude ... the current parliament consists of people who were elected in the last election in which the red shirt party (Pheua Thai) won more seats than any other party but not a majority, so a democrat-led coalition was formed when the Pheua Thai lost the support of the minority parties. That's how a parliamentary democracy works - look it up! But no! You and the reds would have the PM dissolve a constitutionally elected government just because a bunch of demagogues have convinced a bunch of gullible people to roam around the city blocking roads, defacing public property, launching grenades, and performing barbaric blood rituals. You call that democracy - seriously?

I submit that it is you, oldgit, that don't have a clue about democracy, not those of us who are attempting to call attention to the hypocrisy of the UDD leaders.

Well said, Kudo's. It is just unfortunate that this type of fact based reason will again and again fall on deaf brainwashed ears. Sad and embbarrassing days for Thailand.

I was just about to say the same. Very well put.

I was also here during Thaksin's time and I'd like to add that Thaksin can be held directly responsible for the escalation of conflict in the South.

It does worry me that the Red Shirts are employing this "Peasant" uprising idea and imagery, just take a quick hop over the border to Cambodia and see where Pol Pot's version of "Democracy" got them 30 years ago.

I'd also dispute the "Majority Red Supporters" line, not around here - Bangkok and surrounding provinces, certainly not in the south. So where then?

  13. I don't want to get into a linux vs the world debate, as I don't consider myself qualified, or fanatical, enough to be a linux advocate.

But I will say I'm not a geek, but I have worked in IT support and engineering for over 10 years. Working mainly with the Windows platform.

My only advice to anyone considering, or curious about, Linux is to go to ubuntu.com or en.opensuse.org, download the Live CD and give it a go.

You can run Linux from CD without messing with your PC setup. Then you can make an educated desicion on your own as to whether or not Linux is for you.

  14. I have been using Ubuntu for 3 years now and can definitely say that there is nothing that I need windows for. One of the main problems that some companies I deal with encounter when they try to run Linux is certain Thai programs won't run on it, i.e. Express accounting, Thai software dictionary. I think if these companies could provide support for Linux then these companies would make the switch. There is also one accounting program that I used to like to use for my business, but I just installed virtualbox and had a very fast windows xp at the click of a button, all from inside my Ubuntu machine.

Not sure if this would work with the software you mention, but a lot of windows software will run on Linux using Wine or Crossover Linux

Worth a try, I use Photoshop a lot, and can run Photoshop 7 (almost)perfectly with Wine in OpenSUSE.

  15. funny to see in the department stores when selling a new computer / laptop .... FREE OS they always put on it... meaning linux, but who uses that as an end-user

I do(for work too) - a Linux distribution called OpenSuse. I've also used Ubuntu in the past.

Great software, don't know why anyone would buy Windows or Mac.

A few years ago Linux was difficult to install and didn't have a wide range of apps. The two distros I mention above are fairly painless to install and setup and for most uses nowadays Linux software is fine. Plus a lot of traditionally desktop software is available online - Google Docs, even Photoshop!

Linux is definitely worth considering for business and personal use. If anyone wants more info PM me and I'll answer your questions.

    All the best,

    John

  16. I have to admit to being shocked by guyinthailand's stats.

I have lived here, Bangkok, on and off for 7 years and have never encountered the level of crime that these stats would indicate.

I come from Ireland where crime seems to be rampant and gun crime is on the rise.

Nationmaster seems to be using wikipedia as its source for some stats and a UN report covering 1998-2000 for others.
