  1. TREASURE TROVE OF FAKES SEIZED

    BY CIARAN FAGAN

    10:30 - 16 May 2005

Trading Standards officers have taken one of their biggest-ever scalps after catching a man with fake goods worth around £250,000.

A haul of watches, perfumes, handbags and sportswear with designer nametags including Gucci, Luis Vuitton and Nike, were discovered at Hanif Daud's warehouse in November 2003.

However, despite their luxury labels, the goods turned out to be fakes.

Consumer watchdogs in Leicester believe it is one of the biggest seizures since they launched a crackdown on rip-off merchants in 1999.

John Fox, head of Leicester City Council's Trading Standards team, said: "This was one of the largest seizures we have had in Leicester. It is a very significant size.

"There was a huge range of goods. We had the best part of 30 brands and we think it was items he had ready for the Christmas period.

"We would say they have a retail value as counterfeits of around £250,000.

"Since we launched our campaign, we have done more than 60 raids and some businesses have closed down because we have made life too difficult for them to trade in counterfeit items.

"If you are in business, you have to protect yourself by making sure you deal with honest traders. Mr Daud has been in business a long time and he should have been more careful."

Daud, a wholesaler who owns HS Fashions in Western Road in Leicester's West End, ran a previously legitimate business selling to small shops across the Midlands.

Daud (45), of Dale Street, Highfields, bought the fakes from other suppliers and had no role in their manufacture.

He appeared at Leicester Crown Court last week where he admitted 13 offences under the Trademarks Act 1994. At another hearing at the start of May, he was convicted of 12 offences under the Act for a haul of designer sportswear he bought from strangers for £22,500.

He said he did not realise the goods were fakes.

However, he was convicted at the first hearing after he failed to convince a jury he had made "reasonable" efforts to establish authenticity.

Dermot Breen, chairman of Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce's city centre committee, said: "Leicester had a reputation as a prominent centre of counterfeiting but the efforts of the police and trading standards have alleviated that in recent years."

Mike Roylance, of sportswear brand Adidas, is also chairman of the clothing and footwear section of an industry anti-counterfeiting group.

He said: "Counterfeiting damages firms' reputations and also confuses the customer, who ends up with shoddy goods.

"We are trying to get these fake goods off the streets so people can buy in confidence."

  2. The main problem you will have will be retaining your revenue - online trading poeple will want to pay by things like paypal and online credit cards - it gives them protection from <deleted> selling counterfiet goods online - paypal and the CC companies will make the repayment chase you for the money then **** up your life by destroying you credit ratings - and if you are in the UK report you to trading standards.

    Good luck

  3. thanks for the info guys....

    all a bit worrying really....

have u guys lived in bangkok long? has it had an impact on your health?

i will be moving to bkk in the next two years with my wife..the health side of things scares the shit out of me.....

    anyone else feel the same?

I stay in BKK 6 months UK Leicester the other 6. Before I used to work on the top of a mountain in saudi very clean air everytime - I went to BKK I got a chest infection. Now when I go from leicester I don't - mabey there is a similarity in the air quality. The chest infection rate is also much higher in the rainy season when all the Thais are coughing and sick. If you are getting it regualry be aware that Tb is also on the loose in LOS- if is bad and recurant get a chest x ray. i also know people you cannot live in BKK due to the air quality causing so many health problems. It effects everyone individually.

  4. After fifteen years of being resident in France, she must be entitled to French citizenship by naturalisation (assuming she's there legally). Most EU countries are much less demanding than that.

As I'm sure you know, EU nationals of one country are allowed to freely live and work in any other EU country. I can't imagine why anyone would specifically need citizenship of Germany rather than France.

    Just my opinion.

My thoughst exaclty only difference Germans have high level of social security subsidised by the rest of us mugs in the EU mabey that is the issue

  5. You need to check with your ticketing agent in regard to the terms and conditions of the ticket - it may be you are totally liable for missing the check in and if so will have no recourse. Also check exactly what is says in your insurance policy - exclusions outwith the control of the airline ie being grounded by the Uk goverment are probably not covered. I also did not understand what happened you were delayed by 32 hours and still missed the check in. were you late then Phuket Air offered you a flight 32 hours later that was subsequenlty cancelled due to the grounding if so Phuket Air have probably acted corrreclty under the terms of the ticketing agreement. Have you contacted Phkuet Air in the UK and tried to make a claim from them.

We checked in on time in Bangkok for the Phuket Air flight which was scheduled

to arrive 0830 Sat at Gatwick, we eventually arrived at Gatwick 1630 on the Sun

32 hours late via Sharjah and Amsterdam.

Our flight to the Channel Islands was 1255 Sun so due to Phuket Air incompetence

we had to pay £300 to buy replacement tickets as the originals were non-changeable.

The insurance company say we are not covered because the planes were grounded for safety inspections and not mechanical breakdown.

Surely the planes were grounded for safety reasons DUE to mechanical breakdown

Fuel leaking on takeoff,no operative collision avoidance system etc.

I agree - read the very small print of your insurance documents does it actually mention safety inspections if not contest the insurance companies decision. Tell them you will complain about them to industry regulator. Was it a small insurance company overrighten by one of the big boys if so compain to the over-righter as well. This is a very unusual situation it is extrememly rare for a an airline flying to UK to be actually grounded for saftey reasons by the authorities many have ramp checks and pass or are required to take minor actions and fly without delay. The insurance company may actually be unsure of what to do and are hedging their bets hoping that you will accept thier descion and not appeal.

You could also try and claim off Phuket air in UK they caused the delay. Threaten then with small claims court - thai is iof they are operating any more.

  6. If you meet a friend after you arrive do any of them have the same symptoms - Amoxil 500's may be the answer to this and other upper respitorty chest infections- they are spread through areosl contamination - ie being close enough to be breathed on by a person or AC where the bugs may be waiting - the anti biotics are available over the counter - then again you may have an allergy - if you get it every time - don't overdo the amoxils you can build up a resistance to their effect and more serious conditions where they could help you later may be denigrated - your state of health in LOS is directly linked to those who you come close to - not meant as a preached lesson just a matter of fact.

  7. Surely history is history - The Japanese are trying to hide theirs at the moment - hence protests in China - should we try to hid the facts because some may find them distastful - should we not dicuss the holoucaust because we find it distasteful - should we not dicuss slavery because we find it distasteful.

    I think not

    Lest we forget

  8. I appled at Boa, SCB, then eventually KTB gave me a card. Then I got Amex.

Why would I want a local card? Because I can settle nearly all my accounts easily in one go.

About cards being stolen or cloned - use your own judgement. I know of several million people here it have never happened to.

Most major CC companies provide an on line service to let you settle - why go Thai dangerous

  9. How does one cook/steam sticky rice without a steamer and basket... ?  If it can be done at all that is... :o

    Sorry if it's a stupid question...  :D

    totster  :D

you can buy a metal version of the steamer in most chinese supermarkets they use it to make dumplings works fine

  10. You need to check with your ticketing agent in regard to the terms and conditions of the ticket - it may be you are totally liable for missing the check in and if so will have no recourse. 11. Be very careful what you do the interview for the NI Number is not a cursary affair - my wife was in for 45 minutes - they are very detailed in finding out what she has been doing - if she is entitled to work legally - what benefits she had been claiming - it also includes a lot of like stuff from the visa interview in Thailand. they will want to see pay slips, proof of NI payments on the temp number. I would keep it all above board.

  12. I don't know what the alcohol consumption rate is for expat caucasian women, but I'd make a sweeping statement and say that female alcoholism among caucasians is comparatively high.

    G&T in the morning (pick-me-up)

    White wine at lunch

A cold lager in the afternoon at the Emporium cafe

    Early evening martini

    Red wine at dinner

    Tumbler of whisky before bed.

Tipplers ! Every one of 'em.

You sound like you've been drank "under the table" by a female :o

I have been drunk under the table with a few women
