  1. From Jan to Jun 1969 I flew as a doorgunner (US Marine Corps) out of Phu Bai, Mag 36, HMH-462 CH-53 B ..........78 missions and only shot down once 18 hits and landed on a friendly LZ (Stud). At the time the most expensive helicopter in the war and the fastest. We had great pilots.....many Korean War jet jockeys who transitioned to fly in the war. Oh for you youngins' it was the American War in Vietnam and we were winnin' when I left..................

should have stayed longer,....and witnessed the Vietnamese winning....!!!!

that was something little guys in pyjamas kicking the ass of the most powerful army of the moment.....!!!

"Little guys in pajamas" is not a fair description of the warriors of Vietnam. They were committed Communist and experienced guerrilla fighters while American allied forces were using conventional tactics. They killed over 58,000 of us and wounded over 300,000. Maybe we should have not been there in the first place.

  3. One on the Mae Rim Rd is very professional, but a little cold and impersonal, its clearly a business first and foremost.. I also doubt the claims they make about how much time the dogs spend free roaming, I suspect its a lot less then they tell you it is, which makes it something closer to caged boarding. I also had a issue where one price was agreed, deposit paid and on return he tried to charge me a (slightly) higher day rate, insisting he didnt agree the earlier rate, luckily I happened to have the receipt which is unusual as I dont normally keep paper for much time. Then he got all huffy and acted like he was being ripped off and all "next time cannot this price" when he clearly quoted me that.. It is however very clean and efficient, they can wash your dog before you return (extra fees) and they photograph the dogs daily and send these images to you via facebook albums and tagging, my wife likes that a lot. I just dont get a really caring vibe from it.

Also theres pooch resort, which has moved from saraphi to the san patong side of hang dong.. If I will be a little blunt, the guy who runs this seems a teeny bit away with the fairies, but he clearly loves dogs, understands them, and they are full time allowed to be out and loose.. Its very much slacker and less professional than the above, but oddly I feel like he cares more about each animal as an individual.. I trust him to 'care' about my dog more.

plus 1 for Pooch Resort ................Google it. Have a 50 kilo German Shepherd dog who has his own suite there when we travel.

  4. Sent registered mail on 12 September (about two weeks before the required report date), processed by Immigration on 15 September and completed receipt received on 19 September. Total elapsed time: one week!

The new receipt of notification (which --- don't forget --- you place in your passport) is computer-generated with a bar code recording your passport number. It contains two very clear notices in English which notify that the report is NOT an extension of stay and which notes the next reporting date.

NOTE: The Immigration Office did write a PO Box number as part of their address, both on the receipt and on the return envelope I provided. You should now address your report to P.O. Box 882 as part of the address noted by Tywais in the pinned thread. That might even speed things up further.

It is not necessary to send a report by registered mail (cost: Bt18), but it may give you some comfort in case of lost mail. I personally have never had mail misplaced in ten years or so. Up to you. For the budget-conscious, If you comfortable not going to the post office and have a clear return address, the whole process costs (for four quarterly reports annually) all of Bt24 (including postage for the return envelopes) plus the cost of envelopes and some photocopies.

Each to her own, but one agent charges Bt1500 a year, I believe: some 60x more. The difference is obviously worth more than a few cheap beers. I note this since, judging from a recent thread, there seems to be an intense interest in the cost of beer! biggrin.png Otherwise, it beats hell out of visiting the office.

Mapguy............Sometimes your posts 'drive me up a wall'..........and then there are posts like this that are 'spot on' for those of us who are 'not the brightest bulb in the package'.

I have been avoiding THAI POST for over a decade after a bad experience and now THAI IMMIGRATION has become even more distasteful.......so I'll be using the lesser of the two evils to maintain accountability with the other.

Thanks for posting the easy instructions and lending your support. If my '90 day report' becomes 'lost in the mail' you will hear from me !! LOL's

  5. Ten years ago Banwangtan in section 5C had far fewer homes than now and had a soi dog problem with the dogs running in a pack. It got serious when a female went into heat and the males fought for the alpha dog position.

One day I was upstairs looking out the window of a back bedroom at a group of dogs running the street when I saw a pickup come to a stop with a half dozen young men in back who dismounted with with nets resembling very large tennis rackets. The young men immediately started pursuing the dogs who started running for their lives seemingly knowing what was going down. I found it amusing and was actually cheering for the dogs.

The new method of controlling the homeless dog situation in Banwangtan is a group of residents keep the animals in one area by feeding them and then one day they disappear.......I assume to one of the homeless shelters in CM. I commend this group as it appears there is an endless supply of unwanted pets in the area delivered to Banwangtan by irresponsible owners knowing the Buddhist middle class owners here will feed them. A new group of dogs is forming now.

I personally do not have a problem with the homeless dogs as when my dog Bruno, a 150 lb German Shepherd Dog and I go for a walk everyone runs.

  6. Went for my 90 day reporting 10 days ago. 3 hour wait with 70 people ahead of me in the cue at 2:15pm on Friday.

2 hours for me last Wednesday. The last few visits were much better. I'm afraid things are reverting back to normal.

Wasn't that the day before the four day holiday and the day after. If it was you had good service. Also nice to know what time you showed up. Seems like more and more are going in the afternoon.

Any body been in there lately in the late afternoon?wai2.gif

My 90 day reporting was due last Monday the 18th so I showed up at my usual time of 3 PM on the 19th and was given a number with so many people ahead of me it would have been 5 PM before my number would have come up. So I left.

I returned at 11 AM Tuesday and was given a number I calculated would not come up until 2 PM, so I left.......went grocery shopping and home returning at 2 PM.

Now there were only 5 ahead of me. And then the guy ahead of me goes up with a stack of passports. That's OK there are two officials processing the alien passports. And then a well dressed Thai lady comes forward, whispers in the Thai officials ear while a well dressed Caucasian foreigner shows up and hands in his passport.....no number called out/none visible. I almost went ballistic. I have just wasted 2 days trying to do one 90 day report.

I have been doing this nonsensical waste of time reporting the same address and phone number for 12 years. I am ready to pay someone to do it for me.

My mental health is worth more than a few Thai Baht.

  7. I also ride a hybrid, Trek 7200 for the past 6 years. Every Thursday 40 kilometers in two hours is my primary goal; cardiovascular exercise my mission. I ride mostly local roads in the Big C (Hang Dong Road) / San Patong / Lamphun triangle. This area is comprised of interconnecting paved roads with villages separated by vast rice paddies. I use a GPS to monitor my location and speed. I also do shorter rides during the week in the same area if I have an hour or so free. Customarily I ride alone.

PM me if you have similar interest and want to see the area.

    What GPS do you use/recommend,plz?

GARMIN.......GPS map 60CSx ($200+) with handlebar mount from Garmin Pantip Plaza ..........bought EBAY out of Michigan.........priority mail to my home in Hang Dong insured for $100 .....2 weeks later note from Hang Dong PO to come to PO to pay duty based on $100........200 Baht.

Contacted http://rotweilermaps.com/maps.cfm in BKK for map of Western Thailand (Mae Sai to Phuket).....downloaded to laptop on to 60CSx.

Always carry it with me hiking, in my car traveling, on my motorcycle and always on my bicycle.

  9. It's dead easy to renew your passport in the US. As I recall I went to the post office, filled out some paperwork, got my photo taken, paid a few bucks, and the new passport arrived in the mail a week or two later.

There is also an express service that makes a new passport in a matter of a few days.

To the OP...........Food for thought.........When you show up at Thai Immigration at the Airport on your return trip with a shiny new passport without a valid visa in it the chances are they will give you a 30 day permission to visit and you will have to start the non immigrant visa process all over again.

When the American authorities give you a new passport they invalidate your old passport by punching holes in it and print in red a big CANCELED across the information page. Thai Immigration prefers you have your visa transferred to your new passport within 48 hours as the old passport is no longer valid. You are treading on thin ice.........be careful.

  10. Here is some relatively recent information related to this subject.

My American passport expired January 7, 2014. Last year I bought round trip tickets here in CM to Florida Leaving July 15 and returning September 1, 2013. Obviously there was only were only 4 months and 6 days left on my passport. As well I had less than 6 months left on my passport when I left CM.

There was never a question going or returning (Korean Air).

My retirement visa renewed October 1, 2013. Since my passport was expiring Jan 7, 2014 Immigration would only give to me an extension to Jan 7, 2014 at which time I had to go through the annual extension process again with my new passport. My new annual extension date is now January 7. An expensive and time consuming mistake on my part.

Some other thoughts........If you bought your round trip tickets here you will technically not be traveling to Thailand.....you will be returning to Thailand.

You may renew your American passport anytime up to one year before the expiration date and currently there is a 7 to 10 day turn around from the date you make application until your new one will be available for pickup at which time they will invalidate your old one (which has your current Thai retirement extension in it).

You may renew your Thai retirement annual extension to stay up to 30 days before the current one expires.

I would suggest you try to renew your passport just prior to your retirement extension date so you won't have to go through the hassle of transferring the Thai visa to your new Passport.

Don't forget to make your Immigration appointment 100 days before you need it. Timing will be important in your case.

  11. I will not recommend a Lawyer for you to use however I will make some suggestions for you on this topic from my experience.

Ten years ago I found a residence for sale in a popular moo baan. Manager of the moo baan put me in touch with the seller. We arrived at an equitable purchase price.

As a former Real Estate Broker in America I knew the routine...................in Florida. 1st big mistake !

I employed a local lawyer to do a title search. He assured me the Chanote was clear of liens other than the existing mortgage held by a local bank....2nd big mistake.

On his word a substantial earnest money payment with closing within 6 months. 3rd big mistake.

Time was required for my Thai wife to close the sale on her home.

On the day of closing we met at the lawyers office and completed the necessary paperwork, then retiring to the appropriate Ampur to transfer the Chanote to my wife's name.

FULL STOP.................Ampur will make no changes to the Chanote......There is a CLOUD on the title.

It took me two years and a lot of money to clear the title and accomplish the transfer. The lawyer assigned two subordinates who did not work for free.

Suggest you acquire a copy of the existing Chanote, both sides. If held by a bank go to the bank and get a copy. The seller should assist you.

Go to the appropriate land office with the copy of the Chanote and do a search. My understanding is a title search cannot be done without the information on the Chanote. It will require a Thai assistant if you do not speak Thai. By-the-way there is no such thing as title insurance here.

Or you can throw the dice and hope it doesn't come up 'snake eyes'.

    Good luck

  12. Has anyone driven from Chiang Mai to Bangkok and return since the military has been in control of the country using police power through Martial Law ?

My interest concerns Hwy's 11 to Lampang and #1 to Nakhon Sawan and specifically the police check points en-route.

My wife and I had our annual trip to her family home in Nakhon Sawan planned when Martial Law was declared and I postponed it until the political situation settled.

My concern is being restrained at a police check point and forced to unload the car which has taken my wife all day to load with large clothing bags, food stuffs, analog TV's that she spends an entire year collecting for 8 siblings and spouses, many nieces, nephews etc..........every cubic foot in the car is packed tight.

To unload and reload at every check point is not something I want to do. It has not been a problem over the past ten years.......

You say, why not just drive down in an empty car this year ? That is not even a remote possibility as the wife would 'lose face' and we would undoubtedly be 'tarred and feathered'. You see my wife is the only one in the family to have "struck it rich" and is expected to share. They line the path as we arrive applauding.

I don't mind as the agreement is........ no-one comes to Chiang Mai.

    Applicable in-put requested........

  13. There is a shop in Wararot market that sells the small flags seen in some sports bars. Im not sure if they also do full size flags but they may know who does if they dont have any. From memory its on the road that separates the 2 halves of the market. Going from the market towards Chang Klan road its on the left hand side about half the way down. Unfortunately I cant be more precise as I havent been there for some while.

    Good luck

You are close Kiwi..........It is on Chiang Moi approaching Wararot Market on left is Bangkok Bank, 2 doors past is the flag shop. Also have staffs and lots of Buddha stuff.

  14. I also use POOCH RESORT (now located in San Patong). The staff give personal care to all the animals they board. Not only offering a large communal area there is in a shaded area 3 large suites with an equally large dog house for dogs who don't play well with others. I have a 150 lb (68k) German Shepherd dog that is charged with the security of my home when I'm not there and he is not friendly with anything or anyone other than me and my wife. In visiting this past week I saw the new CAT HOUSE and would recommend it to anyone who has a pussy they would like to board while they travel. PM me for contact info.

  15. Moo Bann Banwangtan (http://banwangtan.com/index.html ) in Hang Dong 15 minutes South of Chiang Mai city center on #108 has three lakes with lots for sale.

Go to site, click pic of house upper left, click on map. I would not swim in the lakes nor would I swim in any private lake in Thailand.

There are some very high end houses currently under construction on the lakes.

  16. Greenside is correct in all that he says, I have been using 3M Filtrete for 5 years on all four of my a/c's. The two rooms I use most often (bedroom and exercise room) I never open the windows and the door only to enter and leave. I run the a/c's 3 hours each day not only to cool the room but to filter the air. I know it works as I changed the filters this past Jan and in checking them this morning they are black with filth already. I will change them again today.

If I wanted a completely clean room I would have to tape all windows and rubber seal the door.

3M Filtrete now comes in rolls similar to aluminum foil and as Greenside says easy to cut and install. I restocked at Home Pro, Hang Dong in January.

From experience the filth in the air will remain with us until the next good rain..........The smoke is just there to remind us of the hazards.

  17. Went in yesterday at 2 PM, #670 being served, I received # 671 and out in 10 minutes in spite of dealing with two newbie's w/o #'s. Place was jam packed standing room only, inside and out. Curly haired girl was friendly and efficient. Upon congratulating me for having perfectly completed paperwork I told her I had been doing this every three month's for 12 years and she suggested I apply for residency so I would no longer have to do it. I told her when she became Prime Minister I would consider it. Big smile !!

  18. In the past I have used Lanna Labs on Mahidol highway. Walk in, tell them what you want, the phlebotomist will draw a blood sample, you pay 125 Baht per requested test (cost at that time) and you return the next day for results. Easy in/out good parking.

How to find Lanna Labs. Starting At the Ping river bridge going West towards Airport Plaza, go about 2 kilometers slowly looking left until you see a dome shaped building next to the highway, turn left just after. Stop, Look up and see the sign on the side of the bldg. LANNA LABS

I have used CM Ram lab since 2002 also and find their results very close. I am not sure Ram will test you if you do not have a Doctor on staff or have been a patient there with an existing file.

  19. Yes a 10 kg fish (22 lbs in Americanese) depending on variety can drowned a diver who panics.

    As a 30 year spear-fisherman (1962 - 1992) I've had many life threatening experiences.

Unless he was diving in more than 40' of water he was 'free diving' (no tanks).

He had his gun tied to his wrist on a short leash as he was after smaller fish. After spearing the fish he releases the gun and using both hands pulls the speared fish to him, grabs the spear, jams his thumb into the fishes mouth while threading a stringer through the gill plates and out the mouth. Then compressing the barbs on the spear head he threads it out of the fish and plays it out behind him, resets his spear and gun and continues hunting.

I think he shot a fish bigger than he was prepared for, got a good penetrating hit, the fish surged away jerking the gun out of his hand, pulling him along at speed causing his mask to rip off. He panicked and drowned.

FYI.......most spear-fisherman I've known eat everything they kill since they have a choice and it is very up close and personal much like hunting a deer with a knife.

    RIP brother................

  20. I've been using Nat for several month's......best Ive found in 11 years..............JR

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/650233-recommended-barber-in-cm/

    Posted 2013-07-01 08:18:17

Sunshine Barbers - In old city, Soi 5 Ratchadamnoen Road - not far from the Wawee Coffee restaurant - female barber (Nat) who is excellent - more of a hair stylist than a straight barber, She is English speaking and mainly caters for farangs. Her prices are a bit higher (still only 150B for a cut!) but as someone else in this thread said - What you get is what you pay for. The price reflects the level of service.

There may be some in this forum who have wondered what happened to Nat. She was the barber in the new complex just inside Thapae Gate. She had 3 months break and has just reopened in the new location.
