  1. It is now compulsory for Thai kids to have an ID card when they are 7 years old so your son aged 10 should already have his. If he hasn't your wife needs to get him to the local Amphur asap.

If you son is a dual Thai/US national and has a Thai passport why on earth did he enter Thailand on a US pasportermm.gif

  2. Won't this rule make the entire concept of 'getting a visa on the basis of having a Thai child' completely redundant?

If you have to be married to get one, then you'd just as easily get a visa on that basis (being married) alone. Or have I missed something?

That is my understanding as well.

I have a an Extension of Stay based on support of a Thai Child. I am married to the child's mother but switched about 4 years ago for various reasons. When I first applied for the extension based on a Thai child there was no financial requirement for this type of extension but the Immigration Office in Korat insisted I showed the same money in the bank as for an extension based on a Thai wife which I did and have done on each subsequent extension.

So in reality I was issued an Extension of Stay based on my Thai child but only by satisfying the rules for an extension based on marriage.

I did my 90 day report last week and was reminded that my Extension of Stay is due for renewal next month. I asked what paperwork was needed and was told same same as last year.

I will post again if I experience any difficulties in getting my extension of stay this time around.

  3. well that was a helpfull reply thank you

It was a helpful reply College Fees are very expensive.

A child is for life not something you leave behind after a holiday jolly.

Wether you want to be with the mother or not the child is your responsibility and if this inconveniences you too bad.

Be a man not a kid and live up to those responsibilities!!!!

  4. Thanks Sinbin, I am pretty sure its not the batteries as I replaced those a couple of months ago.

Do you know the name and number of a reputable locksmith in Korat. I am happy to do a police report if it is needed but I cant imagine proof of ownership will be a problem as the safe is cemented into the floor in our bedroom.

  5. I have a Sure Electronic Safe that for some reason won't open and I cannot find the key that is needed to open it manually :annoyed:

Does anyone know anywhere in Korat that sells Sure Electronic Safes?

Alternatively does anyone know a good locksmith who can come to unlock it.

  6. UBC is now TrueVisions and has been for quite a while. They are part of the same company who supply your internet.

Seems strange that one arm of the business will extend your payment period and another refuse to do so.

A definite case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.

Hope the flood waters recde soon.

  7. Were the establishments you refer to in #7 bars where women sold sex? And if they recruited prostitutes from bars would they not still be prostitutes? And since there is a lot of drug use in bars would it not be reasonable to test for drug use if you did not want employees who used drugs?

Both Good Points. I was actually referring the Kyote type bars, where a fair percentage of the girls would rather not be fondled by Thai or Farang punters, but need the money for whatever reason. They are not necessarily hookers. As for the drug testing, I would have to agree with you, and I expect that if this gets resolved that will be one of the first things the guys will implement. I know some of the television channels over here in the UK have random drug testing. I guess in any business you have to trust your staff with a certain amount of personal responsibility. I haven't worked out from the reports what drugs the performers tested positive for - all I can work out is the test went purple?

One of the Thai newspapers reported it was Yaba and Ice both Class A drugs here.

I was very pleased to read your post explaining the situation. I am a very good friend of the Korat-based person who was arrested and I am very glad that the true role of this business has been explained.

I am good friends with several of the girls who work there and know that they were all very happy in their work. As things stand they and the backroom workers seem to be the be the biggest losers in this.

  8. Forgive my ignorance but why would a taxi driver flat out refuse a fare? I thought they are all about making money of the farang.

I think cardholder probably means that they refused to turn the meter on rather than refused the fare.

Although if the traffic is bad many taxis will refuse to go to places like Chinatown.

  9. Hi Laura sorry to hear about your brother and I hope he makes a full and speedy recovery.

There are many good hospitals in Bangkok. The Bumrungrad is probably the best but the Bangkok Group of Hospitals and The Samitivej Hospital are international standard too.

Hopefully your brother has insurance as the costs are extremely high. Without insurance you will probably have to pay a deposit and then pay the bill on a daily basis. Contact your Embassy they should be able to advise you on this.

Chok Dee (Good Luck in Thai)

  10. I knew that the Thai politicians are stupid but that they are so stupid I never imagined........

they are not stupid ............... Selfish is what we should say...

clearly the law is for themselves....

doesn't reflect the voices of the majority ...

somehow I don't think that it will be the Thai politicians who will be proven stupid in this case....

    Just call it intuition.

The intuition of those in the know ;);)

  11. I am referred to as farang by my wife's family and our 6 year old son is known to all and sundry as farang noi.

I can't say it bothers me and my son loves it because it distinguishes him from his contemporaries.

I have been called farang in a non-friendly manner on occasions but usual by drunks at local parties so that doesn't bother me either.

Why be so sensitive it's so engrained in Thais that there is sweet FA you can do about it.

Japan and Libya now these are things to worry about.

  12. Move to China, far better than Thailand , lot less problems with visa, if you do not leave China for 3 years you get treated as chinese, and obtain long term visa. If you marry a Chinese girl you get a life time visa, no problems with money in the bank. The women are far more beautiful than Thai's. China is a beautiful country.

You forgot to add that China is controlled by a murderous regime that would think nothing of mudering thousands to maintain their undemocratic grip on the country. Now why don't you foxtrot off to a China related forum. ;)

If you wear a Red Shirt then you are describing the current Thai Regime!! Ok only hundreds not thousands.

Just remind me when was Khun Mark elected?

Back on topic Soi Cowboy, just like anywhere in Thailand, requires you to keep your wits about you. Get sh*tfaced and insult a Thai and you are asking for trouble. That said I sincerely hope the "alleged" report of a death is just that,

  13. RIP Nigel and some sound advice from the OP.

I have left a letter in Thai and English for my wife with clear instructions who she needs to contact when I die.

As for health insurance I always carry the card and she is well aware of my hospital of choice.

  14. I live NW of Korat near NonThai. I am not sure where Soeng Sang is.

It is very rural here, the rice paddies begin 15m from my house.

I first met my wife's family at the funeral for her youngest brother and even in their time of grief they went out of their way to make sure everything was good for me.

I have a special bond with the eldest brother and we often go off for a few days together to varius parts of the country.

You have to accept that her family will always come before you and she would never dare to tell her eldest brother to shut up. He clearly wanted to make her lose face if he called her a "slapper in front of the taxi driver.

He probably won't change his point of view so you will just have to put up with it.

7 years down the line the oldies still stare at me and refer to me as farang even though they are well aware of my name.

There are a lot of positives about living in a village and I cant think of a better place for my 5 year old son to grow up.

  15. Very sad news, I never met John but exchanged PMs with him in his Udon incarnation.

When his avatar resurfaced as Gunga Din I kept meaning to get in touch but sadly never did.

RIP John, my condolences to his family and friends.
