  1. Nah, I wont lend any more money to Farangs now. My chances of getting ripped off have dramatically decreased.  :D

    Couldn't agree more!! :o

As for the original question, yes I help the family and they help me.

I think that wherever you marry, like it or not, you marry the family too.

My wife has 7 brothers, some successful and some not. She pays an equal share with those who can afford (3 or 4) to help those in need.

I have never been asked to pay for anything that the others do not also chip in for.

I do not believe my situation is unique, I am sure many of you are in the same boat.

At least I hope so!!! :D:D

  2. I am a British citizen and my wife Thai.

We are expecting our first child in a few weeks, the baby will be born in Korat.

Have any of you been through the process of registering the birth in Thailand?

I have checked the Embassy website but would appreciate advice from any of you who have been there done that  :D

    Thanks

Thank you all for your help.

Thanks for the link lopburi3, as I said in my original post I had checked it out.

Just looking for reassurance that it's as straightforward as it seems. :o

Have followed the advice and emailed the Embassy to send the forms :D

The form can be downloaded directly from the web site.

    Thanks hadn't seen that :D

Geronimo has just raised my next query :D

  4. Derek,

Hi my wife and I will be moving back to Thailand in the spring, we have decided to either live korat, kk, or udon.  My wifes family lives in a small village between Bua Yai and Chaiyaphum and we have been offered land there, but thought being closer to Korat would be better.

Other than coming to Korat and going to the banks for repo properties any suggestions on buying a house that is already built.

    thanks

    Hi Bud

I took the land and built in my wife's village. Also a small village and that's what I like. :o

40 minutes from Korat so not too far.

Apart from the bank you could try the Court in Korat. They handle sales of property where the deeds have been used as security.

We purchased 33 rai of farm land that way and it was a very easy process and a very good price.

Best of luck and stay in touch when you get here :D

  5. I agree that it is all about adapting and learning Thai. If you don't you will miss out on many things. I learn from my numerous nieces and nephews (of all ages) and think kids make great teachers!!

I live near Korat and have a lovely house, a beautiful wife and a baby due in a few weeks.

My wife comes from a large family so I have many in-laws to keep me company.

I am lucky enough to have an Aussie who regularly visits his girlfiend on the other side of the village....so plenty of scope for Beer Chang. :o

I stll have to go back to the UK on a regular basis and live in central London so my village life in Issan could not be a bigger contrast :D

To answer your original question absolutely no regrets whatsoever :D

  6. Back on topic, what would I do with 1 mill dollars ?

Take the wife on holidays to lots of different countries , generally try to stop her spending it, I think she thinks money has a sell by date!! if you dont use it, it will go off or something. :D

Wow she must be my wife's sister :o

  7. The last digit of my phone number is 6, i was just wondering what the other Thaivisa.com members phone numbers last digits were.

The last digit of my Thai mobile is ......6.

    What an amazing coincidence :o

The rain in London has stopped now.... :D

  8. Can any of you recommend a minibus with driver based in Korat. I need this for the whole of December 2004. The problem with the Bangkok based minibuses is the drivers do not know their way around the North-East.   :o

Thanks in advance for your help.   :D

Martin here owner of the Farang Connection in Surin www.farangconnection.awebspace.com we do an 8 seater hire, with English speaking guide (toyota sportrider)but of course we are in Surin, not actually Korat. Depending on times, dates, where to,where from etc,etc I am sure something could be arranged. In fact we have just returned from a tour of Isaan(ref November news) Please feel free to contact me.

Thanks for the details. Have sent you a PM with dates etc.

  9. I carry a credit card size laminated copy of my passport.

On one side is the photo page and on the other my permission to stay that states I have a Thai wife.

I live near Korat and have shown it twice with no problem.

In the end I think it depends on when, where and why you are stopped, and of course the mood of the "officer" who stops you :o

  10. Arstral....Somewhere in your mind you seem to have forgot something......I was talking about Penang. No other place. Have we got that straight now?

And as for being a "runner" as the doc prescribes......He couldn't be farer from the point.

I was read about a decent guy whom had lived, supported and taken care of everyone in his family....The poor B*******d found himself without the necessary money ( according to the Thai's ) to support his family. He had already been doing this for several years!

Now we've got Dr Pat Pong and Asrtral telling them they are the walkers!

I dearly hope that life goes wrong for the both of you!

You two live in a smug little world.

    Claire.

That'd be right. Thanks for your kind thoughts, and continue poverty packing while you can.

In your eyes Claire Dr Pat Pong and Astral live in there own smug little world.

In the eyes of the many they offer excellent advice and information.

They just suggest you follow Thai law, sound advice if you want to live in LOS. :o

  11. Sometimes if the seller is in financial problems, you can have a bargain.

This is true, my brother-in-law has a friend who works at the court in Korat and is always telling us about land that has been signed over as security for loans. If the loan cannot be repaid the land is put up for sale at bargain prices.

I bought my wife 33 Rai for 14,000 Rai, last year the next door plot went for 30,000 Rai. My family already farm the land we purchased so it's productive from day one too :o

  14. I am a British citizen....

I want to bring my Thai wife to the UK for 6 weeks to visit family and friends. We do not need a Settlement (Marriage) Visa as we have no intention of living in the UK.

I have my own comapny in the UK and I am sure I can satisfy the British Embassy in BKK on all financial and residential issues concerning my wife's visit.

Can my wife apply for a tourist or family visit visa or must we go the Settlement Visa route?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

  15. Off the topic a little but does anyone know what documentation a person needs in order to marry a Thai woman, ie what papers if any I need to bring with me?

and can it be strictly a simple civil ceremony (  i know the religous ceremony is long and complicated)

You need your passport and a letter from your emabassy stating that you are free to marry.

Your wife to be needs her ID and house registration (Tabien Bahn).

There are other documents that need to be filed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I think, but it may be a different Ministry. This must be done first as the Ministry issue the permission to marry.

  16. For those of us who maintain our lives within a foreign country, obey the rules, and simply get on with things, this is only beneficial.

That quote is certainly true. I, like many others here, do not understand people who overstay their visas and then gripe when caught.

This is Thailand the clue is in the name!!! It is their country and they are very liberal about letting falangs live here. All they ask in return is you obey their laws, what is wrong with that? :o

  17. I am married to a Thai and have the stamp in my passport that allows me to stay in the country until 14th of March 2004. They have now issued a new stamp that my case is under consideration etc. valid until 23rd April 2004 and I have to go back before I return to England for that to be extended for the full year. As I have to return to the UK on a regular basis I have a multiple entry stamp issued at the immigration office that is valid until 14th March 2004, when I get the full year extension I will get another multiple entry stamp that will cover the same period.

I had 200,000 in the bank last year and 300,000 this year and as I said I was told that next year I must have 400,000.

I am sorry if you find my post confusing, I am trying to be clear. :o
