  1. My question really was in relation to my daughter. Im looking to find out the implications of taking a Thai born child with a British passport into England. Im hearing many different stories about this. An example is not being able to obtain state education for your child if they have been resident outside of the UK for a certain amount of time, despite having a British Passport. Does anyone know anything about this ?

Is it really as straight forward as simply walking through immigration and flashing her British passport ?

Yes I think it is that simple.

Your daughter has full British citizenship and the same rights as children born in the UK.

She might have been born in Thailand but that does not lessen her rights as a British subject.

  2. Take my Sin Sod display money question as the example.

If I move £10000 over by SWIFT and the selling/buying rate is 7% different to the actual rate then I lose £700 moving it over, then when I bring it back a week later I lose another £700. Add in the SWIFT charges and I'll be about £1450 out of pocket, pretty much for no reason.

Every percent better someone's buy/sell rate is saves me £200 that otherwise goes to pay for two bankers' Porsches

If the Sin Sod is just for display borrow it from a local money lender in the morning of the wedding and return it a few hours later.

They charge about 2% a month which would cost you 10,000 Baht if they charged the full rate but I am sure you could negotiate a fee of 5,000 Baht for a same day transaction.

Suggest that to your bride to be.... :D:):D

  3. As long as you are named on the Birth Cerificate your child is British.

Register the birth at the British Embassy and for a fee, I forget how much, you will get your Child a British Biirth Certificate and Passport.

You will need a certified translation of the Thai Birth Certificate which you should be able to get at the hospital where the child was born.

No need to register your marriage in the UK.

It is a very easy process. Chok Dee... :o

  4. Taxi should be same whether you're Thai or not, using the meter. The meter will run up to probably 200-300 baht or so. To get to Mo Chit is probably the best as I haven't heard of any long distance buses near the airport.

Oh, and depending or not on if you want to buy it or he wants to fly some more, why not get him a plane ticket to Korat once he's at Suvarnabhumi?

Because Korat has the proud distiction of having 2 airports with no scheduled flights.

  5. I take no sides between Yellow or Red, but I know for a fact that people from Issan are being bused up here, given free food and 500 baht per day to join in the protest. What is hard to believe that they do all this for only 500 baht ! I live right next to where the Red Shirts are congregating in Pattaya (behind Big C soi 2) and it's basically a empty dirt lot where they setup floodlights and blare loud speaches and video all night long. It's almost George Orwell "Big Brother" like. There meant to eat, sleep (don't know how; I can't), and be brainwashed all right there. It's 5:30AM now. In about an hour the buses will start departing for Jomtien where without any sleep they will herd up in the hot weather all day. All for 500 baht :o

That's 3 days pay for a farm labourer so perhaps not so suprising :D:D:D

I live in a village 40kms from Korat and about 12-15 people from the village are in BKK with the Red Shirts and are NOT being paid.

They are protesting for what they believe is their right to elect a government through the Ballot Box.

  6. I cannot believe it took until post 57 before the esteemed members of TV realised the date!! Very Good one this year boys and girls, by posting on a subject already in the news and close to many TV members hearts you were able to get a real rise from the first 56 posters.

    :D :D :D:wai:

Actually it seems that it was said earlier, but posts have not been published (at least mine was not).....Certainly to keep the ball rolling until now ! :P

Posts that mentioned April Fools were deleted. I think Londonthai mentioned those dreaded words at post number 3... :o:D

  7. Massage parlour minimum age

On April 16, another controversial law is being enforced. After that date, massage parlors can no longer employ anyone under the age of 40, and are required to register all employees as such. This will minimize the request by customers for "extra services" which can cause problems with marriages and minor wives.

Well done George I love that sentence.

    Happy April Fools Day... :o:D:D

  8. I live in a Moo Baan 40kms north of Korat.

We seem to have a minimum of 2 or 3 parties a month here. We are always invited to the parties and generally go if we are in the village.

When they are having all nighters nearby my wife warns me and I stay in Korat overnight.

We also have the mandatory 6am announcements from the Poo Yai Baan most mornings but as I am an early riser these don't bother me too much.

My sister in law used to have 2 hour aerobic sessions everyday right outside my house which was very annoying until they built a communal hall away from us where these sort of events are now held.

Moral of this is if you are going to live in a village be prepared for plenty of noise. There is no point complaining as the this is the Thai way of living and partying... :o:D:D

  9. Hi, has anyone any idea how much it would cost to hire a driver (or Taxi ) to take me to Korat, I know there is a bus or the train, but after a twelve hour flight I do not fancy hauling my luggage around, many thanks.

Most taxis at Suvanabhumi will take you to Korat.

The price is 2500 Baht or thereabouts depending where in Korat you are going.

  10. I phoned Korat Immigration and went through it with them.

They want a letter from your bank showing 400k for at least 60 days or evidence of 40k a month. Obviously they want your passport. They also want the birth certificate and the mother to go with you and the baby. I guess having the baby's passports would not be a bad thing either.

Korat seemed very up to speed on the phone and were aware of the removal of the 50 year old age stipulation.

    hi,

Is the 1 year visa still in place for people who have a Thai child, are over 50 years of age and don't have to show any money requirements or have they scrapped it?

    thanks,

    jjp

I believe that the "zero" financial requirement has been scrapped. Certainly the 50+ rule has gone.

Although as with everything visa related it is at the discretion of the Officer you see.

I have this type of visa extension and am going to the Korat Immigration Office this week. I will post what I find out later.

  11. If I had the money I would throw down the challenge to Sunbelt. "Okay you can get people extentions under rule 7.17(5)in BKK without a show of money, but come up to Korat and do the same. If you can I'll pay your fees. If you can't then walk away without". A no win no pay situation. I some how doubt, even if I had the money, they'd take up the challenge. But it's the only way forward in that we need someone out in the woods with a few balls.

I have got an extension under 7.17(5) at Korat Immigration for the past 2 years.

They told me I was the first to apply at their office for this extension.

The first year was very difficult as the officer in charge was very awkard and obstructive. I had gone prepared with all documentation for an extension based on marriage, to be on the safe side, so I was able to show money in the bank. Then the OIC allowed the application to be sent to BKK. 7 days later they phoned me to come and pick up my extension. I had Sebastien from Isaan Lawyers with me and that probably helped a lot.

The second year they told me that as I was married I had to revert to the marriage extension as 7.17(5) was only available to unmarried fathers over 50. I questioned this as a married friend of mine had obtained an extension under 7.17(5) a couple of days earlier in BKK. They kindly phoned BKK and said the decision had been challenged and overturned so now indeed I could get my extension under 7.17(5). I was asked for copies of my bank book and I provided bank statements from the UK showing my ATM withdrawals in Thailand. The officer dealing with me said he wasn't looking for cash in the bank but just proof that I was spending money in Thailand that came from overseas. 7 days later they phoned me to come and pick up my extension.

My next renewal is in March 2009 and I fully expect that some obstacles will be raised but that ultimately I will walk away with another extension under 7.17(5).

  12. My wife deposited 35k in the machine at our local Bangkok Bank despite my reservations about this.

As she had never used the machine the manager of the branch came over to offer her assistance.

He in fact punched in all the numbers and the amount in Baht, however instead of the receipt showing 35k it showed 3.5k.... :D:D

The manager was clearly concerned how the machine had made this error and immediately closed it down and checked the cash.

My wife's 31.5k was handed back to her in cash and she deposited it with a cashier.

Had the manager not been with her I think we would have had to wave the money goodbye... :o:D

  13. If you transferred the money in Baht then you almost certainly got the Offshore/International Rate.

If you had sent $s you would have got the Onshore/Thailand Rate which has until recently given you a far better rate.

For some reason recently they seem to have reached parity more or less.
