  1. My friend opened a 7-11 franchise store and wanted the bell removed but was told from up on high its a requirement.

I like it when you walk out and the doorbell goes and the customer services technician without looking up says "Sawatdee ka chern ka" thinking a new customer is coming. I bet they even say it when they walk into another store and hear the bell even if they are off duty.

  2. I've read the wikipedia page but didn't see an entry for Thailand.

Is connecting to open wifi networks you haven't been given permission to connect to illegal in Thailand?

Is connecting to wifi networks that are password protected (but you guess the password) illegal in Thailand?

Anyone got any info on this topic at all?

    Thanks.

  3. For two adults and two young kids we spend about 95k per month:

    30k for rent

    15k for bills

25k for food, mostly eating in, eating out once a month somewhere cheap

    10k kids clubs

    4k maid

    = 84k

The other 10k or so goes on misc expenses such as day trips, taxis etc.

The 15k on bills could be cut a bit I think but the 10k on kids clubs is soon to increase as the baby gets older.

Most people we know out here live on at least 100k per head not including accommodation which is covered by work.

Proper expats probably spend 5x that on living in Thailand plus benefits such as car, driver, and housing.

  4. Yup. Half off I think. 'Considered an act of mercy for the sentencer and a positive step for the sentencee in one's road back to goodness - at least I've often heard that's the rationale. Whatever the reason, the practice is definitely in place. (And I think the concept has been proposed in the UK!) It doesn't make crime VICTIMS happy, esp. in cases of serious crime, but if you're guilty and circumstances are such that you don't have any reasonable expectation of acquittal, it's almost a no-brainer.

Its been the same in the UK for as long as I can remember.

Even peados get a reduced sentence for pleading guilty, even if done so at the last minute:

It makes sense as it saves time and money and prevents the victims from having to go through the ordeal again and being aggressively cross examined in court.

Do they sell these skimmers at Pantip?

  5. It might be time to get a car but which is the cheapest, or best value, small 4 or 5 door car on offer in Thailand?

I can't find a list of hatchbacks or micro saloons available in Thailand with their prices anywhere.

Anyone got any experience of the:

    • Toyota Yaris
    • Suzuki Swift
    • Mazda 2 (is there a 1?)
    • Honda Jazz
    • That small Mitsusishi
    • The small Nissan (March?)

Also, what sort of finance would be available to a working farang on a new car? Deposit of what % then monthly payments for how long?

    Any help much appreciated.

    Thanks.

  6. Maybe he had a mental breakdown and wasn't of sound mind enough to phone home.

Maybe his parents don't want that published all over the net so haven't mentioned it.

Basically, when he next applies for a job and the prospective employer Google's his name, this thread and all the insinuations in it will probably be on page one!

"So, tell me about your trip to Thailand. I read online that you were balls deep in something?"
