    S. FL / Keys, Caribbean and Mexico was my playground for 20 yrs.  Close and fairly inexpensive.  Bars & diving.

SEA wasn't even a consideration for a holiday, as too far & expensive to get there.  After actually getting here, nah, not a holiday destination.   I dove twice, Phuket & PP, first 2 visits, and haven't dove since.  Mediocre at best, world class, not even close.

Most people here don't have a clue what is going.

Such a misleading post--- I wonder if done privately --would the mods have taken it away.

Just--pick a country and replace the headline with it...

Australian $$..... crashing down from 75 in April to 67 now..... ....remember the 1990s crash

British Pound down nearly 16 pence from start of year........... Soup kitchens on the way

The Euro on the brink of going under one Euro to a $us..............

The Yen hasn't risen against the $us in nearly 2 years

There isn't a major currency that is on par--let alone go up against the $us

Yet ASEAN lets them keep on repeating this scare mongering.---and prints it.

This is Aseannow man, it is either party hats or the world is coming to an end... haha

It is cheap for me, that's all I care about.

I have a car, a scooter and a GF 23 years younger than me here.I would not be able to have any of those in Australia.

I don't understand the point of your post, if Thailand wants to lose its cheap reputation the COL has to be compared with other countries. One can't do it in a vacuum.

You just described 99.9 percent of the people here. Exactly right.

I see this kind of comment a lot on here.   I qualify quite easily if this visa turns out to be exactly what it says it is going to be.   I'm not sure what better options are there than Thailand for someone who meets the requirements of this visa when taking everything into account (weather, internet speed, cost of living, beaches, people, etc)?   I'm still paying quite high taxes in the UK as I retain tax residency there as it is technically not "legal" to declare I work in Thailand and actually pay taxes here.  This visa would solve that problem and the fact this visa also comes with a "discounted tax rate" is also quite appealing.

I'm quite comfortable in Thailand but am always open to the possibility of better options.    Just wondering what they are and what they offer that is better than this one - if it came to be?

I knew this post was coming... haha

Guess I am not leading a sheltered life. Still paying on College loans for my now doctor daughter and CPA daughter. One still in HS with college to come.  At 57, still need to budget wisely in case the inevitable occurs and I am left with nothing except my pension.  Of course we live a nice life style. Monthly trips etc...

I have helped my children along the way, but I am just considered Middle class in the US.

In this analysis, “middle-income” adults in 2021 are those with an annual household income that was two-thirds to double the national median income in 2020, after incomes have been adjusted for household size, or about $52,000 to $156,000 annually in 2020 dollars for a household of three.

You are doing exactly what you should not be doing, read any article about managing in retirement. Student loans and helping pay , a doctor , CPA. Really?

You are 57 and still have a kiddo in High School. At your age!  You are living the American dream for sure.

You are only looking at half the coin.

Has your Thailand property appreciated 200+% as it has in some places in the USA over the last 2 to 3 years?

Our US property has appreciated US $325,000 since 2019.

Smart people make it to retirement age with NO mortgage.

With no mortgage, $0 a month housing is the same in your own country or in Thailand.

Yeah, mine has gone up over 100K in that time. Just a lower middle class home. Totally agree, it costs me much more to live in Thailand than in the US. But, not near the fun, and I can travel and have a blast in one month what is would cost me in a week here. My problem with Thailand it is not a retirement destination for older expats IMO. Way to polluted. Just miserable after you reach a certain age if you have any kind of respiratory problems what so ever. Many other place so much better when you get old, but a blast when younger...
