  1. I renewed my 1 year last month and received a 5 year card.

    I had to have:

Work permit- for proof of address

    Medical check

    Passport

    Old licence.

as well as photocopies of passport page, visa page, work permit address page, and old driving licence.

Did colour and depth perception tests.

Took one hour, which was surprising as this office was very busy.

  2. You don't need to enter the immigration line. Go to the far right hand side of the airport, there is a booth. (With signs directing you there)

Cost is 1,000 baht plus 200 baht 'service charge'. They do the photo and form filling in for you.

Someone said you now need copies of your visa page as well as the photocopy of the passport picture page, but they will probably be able to do it for you.

Make sure you go with penty of time as the immigration queues can be really bad.

Also, not to be anal about your use of English, but 'Oz' refers to the country and not the people, so next time please use the phrase 'Australian people'.

    Have a nice day!

    or Ozzies.

There is NO "O" or "Z" in AUSSIE. (Ouztralia????) I guess you are American.giggle.gif Not American bashing just saying that you are way off the mark. Just a tip from an actual Aussie. Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi

I'm English, and asked the Thai poster to use the word 'Australian people', and the Thai poster (the clue was his saying in his avatar 'I'm not a Farang') commented 'Oz' as being the person/people.

The point I was making was that many people refer to Australia as Oz, and so he/she should use that for the country, not the people.

In terms of my use of the word to reference him/her, my apologies, my Aussie mate.

  4. Toyota Australia have just announced 350 job losses at their manufacturing plant here; high Aussie dollar, falling sales. Didn't mention other countries charge 200 % import duties crushing any chance of export. Meanwhile a vehicle produced in Thailand could be exported to Australia with nothing like that kind of duty charged.

    Life is unfair, so what.

You want same same both ways.

Oz come to Thailand no need visa. The reverse is not true.

You still want same same both ways?

There`s a world of difference between being able to come to Thailand for 30 days and losing your job because of another country`s blatant protectionism. At the end of the day Thailand needs to collect punitive import taxes to avoid their home industries going under in the face of superior European and American products because if Thais could purchase a Mini Cooper for the same price as a Toyota Camry I know what I`d put my money on them parking on the driveway. Thai exporters are already bleating about the minimum wage doubling. If they had to pay the same duties as foreign exporters Thailand would go belly up in a week and revert to an agrarian society.

    There`s a world of difference?

So Thai people should be treated as 3rd class citizen of the world?

Just like the little black lawyer got thrown off the train in Pietermaritzburg station, South Africa.

When has anyone treated Thai people like third class citizens? Many other countries have to apply for a visa to Western countries. We are not singling your country out. Once you have the visa, you are generally left alone.

Could you say the same as Thailand amd how it treats its 'guests'? We deal with 90 day reporting, re-applying for a new visa every single year, even if you've worked for the same company for years, no autromatic right of re-entry without a permit, etc. Don't get me started about double pricing.

By the way, 'same same' is actually 'same as', yes, one thing is for sure, you're definitely a Thai, nationalistic and you use those fuc_king two words as if they mean something. Also, not to be anal about your use of English, but 'Oz' refers to the country and not the people, so next time please use the phrase 'Australian people'.

    Have a nice day!

  5. Actually Ranong has many things as well as the hot springs.

Waterfalls, live music pubs, a market selling a variety of Thai dishes, cheap hotels, restaurants serving Foreign food, nearby beaches, small islands to take a trip to.

There's even a casino resort on one of the islands.

It just depends on what you like to do.

  6. <Snip>

Back on topic; many taxi drivers have asked me who I support, and I tell them, 'I don't give a shit, I like Thai people, not people that like to break the country into pieces.'

I keep seeing red shirts groups coming in and out of Bangkok, and I have no idea why. It's not like they're going to get anywhere with their actions.

But what about the pink, green and blue shirts? What are they doing now?

Just shows you how disjointed this country has become. I remember a time when Thais were just Thais, and not this colour/that colour, etc.

  7. Well the norm for a condo near the BTS/MRT is from around 7,000 baht up, and the deposit is usually at least a month's rent, if not two months.

I would suggest you move further away from the transport links and get a motobike taxi/bus or walk to the station, costs will be from 3,000 to 5,000 baht.

Some condos in the 7,000 baht price range have fridges some do not.

You can buy a cheap one for 5,000 baht.

Cable TV is extra on top of the price.

  8. Sorry for the late reply, only just found this post.

You'll find that more than once either immigration or the MOE will not accept an online TEFL certificate.

Very odd post seeing as how TEFL is not a REQUIREMENT by either of the above ministries.

Perhaps you just had a bad dream?

    Late reply again!

Yeah, you're right, only a degree is needed, but company asked a 'mate' in immigration who said no way.

Presumably they wanted to sell one of their in house TEFL courses, or someone wanted a 'cut'. Either way, what's done is done.

You know Thai gov offices, sometimes they just don't want to budge on things!

Online TEFL is good for knowledge, but not experience.

  9. Inequality? No way.

The rich and poor in Thailand both have equal rights. Both have only 1 vote.

So says the poster with a Thai name and a photo of a young white Chinese, oops I mean Thai girl, whose idea of a serious issue would be to debate whether she should go to Siam Paragon or whether to go to Emporium.

Of course everyone in Thailand has a vote, but once they've voted for a bloke or another, the corrupt politician who is the winner, rubs his hands together and says 'business as usual' and then dicks on the folks in the North East, as does anyone who is a business owner, and pays crappy wages.

  10. 'In an authoritarian society, people believe the face of authority'.

What I mean is, people will trust the police, and if they don't, the police will soon kick them into the dirt and tell what to think, say and do.

BTW, how many of you have been writing about gambling money lost to Cambodia.

No way, it's spent in Poipet, but the money comes straight back to Thailand. They have Thai owners, Thai staff and Thai customers. Don't forget that. That's surely why the owners don't want anyone legalising gambling here.

  11. It is the sister school of Kasintorn St Peter, the schools are owned and run by three brothers.

I worked for the school for a while and it seems okay, although they work the Filipino teachers very hard for almost half the native speaker salary.

The kids are spoilt rich kids, who I'm sure will do fine after buying their Thai degree and settling down to work in Daddy's company.

As far as I know, the kindergarten section treats the kids very well. (Arts/crafts, shows, swimming pool, singing songs and 90% of subjects are taught in English, etc.)

Shame they don't do the same for the teachers, the salary is relatively low and you have to fingerprint your arrival and depature, so you can't leave early if you have no more classes.

If by high educational standards, you mean textbooks imported from Singapore and not from within Thailand, then yes.

  12. Sorry for the late reply, only just found this post.

You'll find that more than once either immigration or the MOE will not accept an online TEFL certificate.

This may be that someone is not getting their 'cut' from a 'real' TEFL course, or that someone in charge is concerned about the quality of these online courses. I'll leave it to you to decide which.

I did an online TEFL with i-to-i, which was acceptable when the recruiter was paying money under the table and/or had connections.

Also their job placement service is expensive, giving you info you could find out yourself. Also most of the paperwork to get a visa after they'd found me a school, well I had to do that. After the time period you choose, 6 months or 12 months, they're not so helpful when their commitment to you expires.

The next time I went to get a visa with a different company, it was refused because of the online TEFL and so I went to do a CELTA, although probably any face to face TEFL would have been acceptable.

Examples are SEE TEFL or Text and Talk if you did them in Thailand.

I hear IH is doing a P/T CELTA, so you could work and study at the same time.

  13. bedu,

I had no interest on your posts and expressed my fondness of JSixpack's statement on the purpose of a forum. My comments were directed at the thread as a whole and meant to cool down the heat of anger against a farang in giving his compatriots bad name.

    Irene,

Thank you for your reply, and I appreciate the gesture. When you posted your reply to JSixpack's post, you linked in a part of a sentence of mine, and so I assumed you were using me as an example. My apologies, and I have already replied to JSixpack stating my respect for his/her effort to explain the purpose of the forum.

And I agree, some of the comments made by some posters are a little heavy handed unless meant in jest.

    :)

  14. I stand by one of my original points, are we doing any good, are we helping any potential visitors to Thailand gain information?

And your original point is just as irrelevant now as it was in the original post. Our goal here is not to make Eagle in the Boy Scouts or receive the Gold Award in the Girl Scouts. Really, it isn't. I've explained to you what it is.

Yawn. But if by "good" (a very subjective notion, as witnessed by the opinions forcefully held by one Mr. Jeff Savage) you mean "helping any potential visitors to Thailand gain information," then fortuitously in this instance the answer is yes.

Over the course of 27 pages (as of this writing), potential visitors have indeed been helped to learn as much as can be known publicly about a current resident of Thailand should they wish to know it. In another 27 pages, a few more facts may emerge.

And they've learned what a lot of people think about that resident and his actions.

Finally, potential visitors have learned much about the posters on TV--many of whom live here: their remarkably varied levels of maturity, education, and grace; their opinions and speculations about all sorts of off-topic subjects; their opinions about one another; and what kinds of responses the potential visitors may expect should they post here or, heaven forbid, wish to imitate Mr. Jeff Savage.

And that's about it, as for helping the potential visitors in this particular thread. Happy? Now, to continue entertaining ourselves . . . .

Yep, you've made your point and fair do, the man is a bell end, and yes some posts have given information, some not, but... and all credit to you, I gave an opinion, to which you disagree, and it's been amicable and I value your opinion, but I believe I was asking Irene not to make this personal by taking a single sentence out of context.

And yes, I'm quite happy to continue the entertainment by reading on... :)

  15. Irene

    JSixpack,

Excellent statement on the purpose of this forum.

Why do people get personal about it and even calling names and "shouting" in red bold letters. One thing

I learnt from this thread is knowing of the variety of expats - good ones, moderate ones, bad ones, and despicable ones. Like the old radio programme of Semprini with the introduction of music of - the old ones, the new ones and the neglected ones.

If you read my whole post, you'll see I was not writing in red, or bold letters. I was just as shocked by the rabid attacks on posters by other posters. I commented that 24 pages of posts was quite enough. (Enough for a news piece emailed to everyone's inbox and not a forum item) If you just stating in general, okay, but please do not attack me personally. Yes I used the word fuc_king, but not in a swearing way, more in a general everyday use kind of way. We all love to gossip like old women on here, but at the same time I stand by one of my original points, are we doing any good, are we helping any potential visitors to Thailand gain information?

  16. Are we changing anything by fuc_king about here? Any constructive comments available?

    You're missing the point.

Not quite asleep yet. Yes maybe, but it is entertaining, but apart from that, what is the point?

Huh? You see, the forums are primarily for venting, posturing, and idle chitchat that pass for entertainment. Think of this as a sewing circle of old biddies who cluck at one another and nod wisely or not.

Occasionally we do get some useful information amid the cackle, most often in the health and internet forums where the topics are technical matters of fact.

Now you may choose to participate or not in full awareness of the purpose of the gathering. :)

Sorry I thought TV was primarily for people to find out relevant information about, well let me see, Thailand, and the added bonus was people gossiping.

I would like to participate but it's late, so thank you all for the entertainment, the info and some quite crazy posts from some people.

    Good night

This is a fight by Thai.

    Farang should not get involved.

    Foreigners should not get involved.

    ....................................

Hasn't this gone on for far too long? 24 pages of posts of people's opinions!

Threats of violence, insults, and now racist postings by someone who obviously should be using a Thai language site and not just because they can't use the English language properly.

Are we changing anything by fuc_king about here? Any constructive comments available?

    Thanks for correcting my English.

You are better than my ECC English teacher from South Africa.

I am indeed. You are very welcome.

However the point I was making was if you post a comment like that, you give the impression you don't want us 'Farang' in your country. If you were just asking for us not to get involved, then okay.

I'm going to bed now young lady (if that really is you in your profile photo) and as your teacher, I suggest you do the same. Good night.

  19. He must be caught. He must be tortured in order to find out what he knows. And then he must be killed

I agree. It's the only way to convince the world that Thailand is a freedom loving democracy.

You really are a pitiful worm.

Burning down the second largest shopping mall in this region was not an act of democracy. Nor did it have anything to do with freedom of speech. And it was most certainly not connected with the protocols of peaceful protest.

It was an act of terrorism carried out in an attempt (a vain attempt) to destabilize the country.

The perpetrators are not above the law; they are below the law.

In order for successful societies to move forward, sacrifices must be made.

Those who step out of line in a small way must be given a slap on the wrist. This applies to speeding or parking in restricted areas.

But those who attempt to destroy the very fabric of our society must be dealt with in ways far more severe. Not only does this serve as a deterrent, it also eliminates the scum who are unable to fit in with (and come to terms with) modern reality.

I think the poster was actually being sarcastic. I hope the poster was only being sarcastic.

Furthermore you talk about the law, and then say you would do very nasty things to them.

Now I detest what they did, but would this not make you the same as them?

  20. What a bell end. Shames us British. We all get angry, but to post it on You Tube, wanke_r.

'Class war'. Yeah right, and the 1,000, oh no 2,000, no still wrong, 3,000 or so people, probably mostly low paid Isaan people now have no jobs.

No money to send the sick buffalo, so yeah it's a 'class war' alright, eh no, this is just destruction.

No work, no tourists, no investors, but hey, we've put the message across, just not sure what message they're trying to send.

Think it could be 'Shit, we lost, so fuc_k you all and your lives, because if we're screwed, so are you.'

Is this their idea of equality?
