I went in December for a week, not impressed and wouldn't go back. Generally more expensive than Thailand and at the time we were there rates varied from around 200 to 410/baht so you had to shop around.
We went as the travel restrictions were coming to an end so it was very quiet, downside to that was the touts were worse than flies.
Kuta beach must be the dirtiest beach I have ever seen in my life and I have seen some pretty grim sights here in Thailand.
Getting around is not that easy but we got a 3 day pass on the Kuta Kuta bus which was well worth while. Unlimited travel for 2 for 3 days with the online discount was around 700 baht. Only problem with that was being on the peninsula we were another 500 baht over the 3 days for taxis to the nearest bus stop.
At the end of the day it is each to there own.
I think you've made a mistake if you're talking exchange rates.
Sounds like you stayed in Nusa Dua, about the worst place to stay, and isolated, so exepnsive to get around.
As I suggested above, there are plenty of nice hotels to stay in and arond Kuta, but you don't want to stay there too long. Organize a driver online, on the street after you arrive, or my recommendation above, and get the hell out of Kuta for the north, and the sights, natural beauty, beautiful architecture, fascinating culture, great food, and few idiots from other countries.
I've lived there, and visited probably 100+ times over 39 years, and never tire of the place, each time doing some of the same things, and finding new attractions. On my last visit, I visited the rice terraces of Jatiluwih, just magnificent, and up until last year, I didn't know they existed!!

Same here ! Leaving Thailand $hithole for another $hithole is beyong understanding.
I was thinking that only foreigners who live in the west and know nothing would go there !
You're going to the wrong places. I agree that the south coast strip is awful, made awful by anti social idiots from most countries.
If you'd like to try again and want an itinerary, PM me and I'll set one out for you. It really is a fabulous place away from the morons.

Bali is not an islamic state. The predominant religion is the local brand, and holdout, of Hinduism.

I forgot to mention the breathtaking architecture, particularly the roof structures....from underneath.
So much going for the place if you get yourself away from the idiots, but I suppose that applies almost anywhere (getting away from the idiots)?
You don't have to pay more than about $40 for a hotel of a good standard, and the place I mentioned in my long post above, Strawberry Hill inBedugul, is only about $42.00 a night, best in town, and just fabulous. Book direct rather than through an agency too.
In Kuta, and you may have to stay there a night at each end, you can't go past Poppies (same owners as Strawberry Hill), but it's becoming quite expensive. I'm a regular at the Ohana Hotel, a stone's throw from the epicenter of Kuta, Bemo Corner (although there are no bemos there now), so very convenient.
If you're into shopping, Kuta has department stores, locally made designer fashions (not fake these days) at much lower prices than back home.
Another poster mentined corruption. My only brush with corruption has been being pulled over by police on a motorcycle, checking licences and registration. If you have both, there's no issue.
They claim to be big believers in karma, but apparently karma doesn't extend to business dealings, because they will screw you mercilessly in business, with nary a conscience.

if you enjoy places over run by tourists, and certainly many people do, you'll love bali.
once i got to java and sumatra i started to experience and enjoy the real indonesia.
It's only over run along the south coast beach strip, and unfortunately those clowns are migrating to Ubud in numbers, but the bulk of Bali is not heavily touristed.
Those who spend their time propping up bars from Kuta to Canggu say they've been to Bali, but they've really only been to pubs in the south of Bali.

If you stick to Ubud, and and the rest of the island, the place can be quite charming. Amazing handicrafts (some of the best in the world), architecture, arts and crafts, jazz, and culture. That aspect of life completely blows away Thailand. Hands down. The people are nice, and the women can be stunning. Food is not bad. Bali and Indonesia in general have alot to offer. If only you could take a helicopter from the airport, northwards. Denpasar is a hellhole. So is the entire SW quadrant.
We tend to agree spidermike.
If you're into partying and genereally anti social behaviour, then Kuta to Canggu is the place for you, and it's best that you stay in there and spare the rest of the island your presence. Denpasar is just another crowded Asian city, too many cars and pollution, although the craft market on the canal, Pasar Badung, is well worth a visit.
Ubud has become another, but lesser, Kuta, too many using it as another place to get drunk.
As a Bali visitor for 39 years, and having lived there back in 2002, my recommendations are head east to Candidasa area, north east, and around the top to Lovina Beach, very few tourists up there, relatively, and those that are there want a relaxed holiday away from idiots.
Try Masakan Padang, the cuisine of Padang in Sumatra, identified by the large china plates in windows, my all ime favorite cuisine.
You can stay in backpackers to top of the line 5 star hogtels with nightly rates in the thousands of $$.
If you're driving (using a car and driver) to the north coast, via the direct route north, I recommend you stay overnight enroute at Strawberry Hill Hotel in Bedugul, magnificent place, and my all time favorite location, cool and relaxed.
I've ridden motorcycles there since my first visit, and only had two minor scrapes, both caused by cars veering across my path without indicating, but not knocked off the bike. It's a great way to see Bali, but not a place to learn to ride a motorcycle, attempted by too many, frequently with disastrous results.
If you want to go day tripping, use a car and driver rather than a tourist operation minibus. Try this guy Ketut Mulyantara mulyantara06 at yahoo.co.id +628123956288 or calling in Bali 08123956288 I've known him over 30 years, hired bikes and cars from him, put plenty of friends his way, and he's a decent, and knowledgeable guy.
Enjoy Bali.

With all the crap on Trump (or is that "trump") flooding TV, I'm so happy to see the trivia of a lawn mower not starting, the minutiae of everyday life.
HOW REFRESHING!!! I love it.

All too complex....just bail out.I did ask her, she said that she is doing it for my bank account purposes.
The house book is in her mum's name even though the house is hers. I asked whether she'd transfer it back into her name and she said that she wouldn't yet, in case we go overseas together in future....so she is thinking long term.

Post # 40 is good advice...Lanna Lawyers in CM.Does anyone on this thread know the situation with an Australian expat?
I have Thai and Australian wills which both state all assets in Thailand go to my Thai GF, and all assets in Australia go to my son and sister. Don't know what the story is with a death certificate, though.

I haven't read all 38 pages of this thread, so I may have missed something, but what a pleasure to read a thread subscribed to by common interest people.
It makes such a change from the trolling, baiting, flaming and bickering on other threads, with points scoring seeming to be the main aim, rather than contributing something worthwhile, and of interest to others.

I've bought jox at the Weekend Market, Chatuchak, a number of times, about B25 a pair, good value and great quality. They last a few years. Why bother buying 'back home'?
I can't offer any advice on why the elastic fails, and it may just be poor quality, and the same may have happened back home.

Likewise, I've lost a few over the years. No problem at all...lost one last year and the immigration officer at the airport at departure just gave me a new blank form...
Before computer processing there was no crosscheck of numbers, and now they probably don't, even though they can. If they do, what's the significance? The same info is on a new card.
Australia has scrapped departure cards. They serve no purpose, except as a reminder of more bureaucratic times.

He could never have imagined the technology he speaks of could have gone so far, but what vision!!It has started already..
The interesting thing about technology advances is that it's just starting, regardless of whether you're 1 or 100. What is yet to come will be unbelievable.
The 'good old times' don't exist.....life is going to get better and better.

Unfair......and irresponsible!! Carry on bags become missiles in many emergency events. My experience of Air Asia is that if you are in a group and have someone hiding all your carry on behind a pillar somewhere where the check in staff cannot see you) while each person takes it in turn to check in, they won't enforce that limit when you and your friends eventually get to the gate, each with lots of hand luggage. Unfair, yes. Guarantees, none.
Such people are known as 'me firsters', couldn't give a $hite about their fellow pax, inconsiderate, ignorant, arrogant pigs.

Many thanks to Nignoy and everyone for their info. Much appreciated and I'll attempt to phone Centrelink in Australia on Monday. Fully expect to be "put on hold" and/or have to select from a dozen "options" while trying to get a Real Live Public Servant to talk with.
Will let you know the results as it looks as though there are many other Aussie Expats in a similar situation. My first posting on Thaivisa.com and I'm overwhelmed at the response.
heers,
Voiceover.
Voiceover, may I suggest that any advice you receive is confirmed in an email, a link to their website where the information is accessible, or an available brochure from centrelink?
I've never had any dealings with them, but have with numerous government departments over the years, and verbal advice is worth little.

Being a dyed in the wool aviation nerd, I visited the Jomtien 747 this afternoon. It is easy to find. Going south on Sukhumvit pass Ambassador City then when you reach the large Honda showroom (about 250 meters after Ambo City) the 747 is almost exactly opposite.
In case anyone is interested (which I doubt very much but I will carry on anyway!), this 747/200 series first flew in November 1974. It was then delivered to the late Canadian Pacific Airways. 10 years later it was sold to Pakistan International, then a weird West African airline called Orange Air. It was finally sold to - you've guessed it- Orient Thai, though I don't think it ever flew with them. Our sad looking Jumbo was broken up at U-Tapao airport a couple of years ago, and then transported to its current gravesite. The locals hanging around it said that it is to become a restaurant. We'll see!
Any questions?
How do you know so much??? You're a walking, talking encyclopedia!!
Only kidding. Thanks for the info. Were you previously in the aviation business?

Agreed.
OP, If you weren't on the scene, and there was no other foreigner to lean on, who would pay?
Don't be a sucker. You pay this one, and they have you on a string.
No respect being shown here, only disrespect.....for the foreigner they want to milk.

How much dosh will you blow if you bail out of the 50 lessons you'll forfeit?
It can't be so significant as to keep you there if you're miserable.
You say you have a successful business, so write it off.... you'll recover.
Interested in Bali - Has anyone lived there? Or comments on visiting there?

Sorry, thinking of something else. I guess the THB is seen as quite unstable currently, for whatever reason.
The rates will vary wildly from one moneyh changer to another, and I never use the hole in the wall types. PT Central Kuta, offices everywhere, and a place opposite the Indian restaurant at Bemo corner, PT Dirgahayu Valuta Prima I think it's called, best rates, no funny money.
