  1. Latest on this, according to a Thai bar owner friend, is that as of yesterday afternoon 37 bars have been closed in the Jomtien area. It is the work of a newly appointed Chonburi official who is something to do with the new government, Taksin's sister's mob. My Thai is not good enough to have understood his exact title, whether he be Governor of Chonburi, Senator or MP, but he has some sort of axe to grind. Anyone else heard anything?

  2. For the last week or two City Hall has been finding excuses to close all bars in Jomtien. So far I am told, all bars in Soi Whitehouse, Soi 7, Soi 5, some in the new bar complex off Soi Rompho, Country Club, Blue Dolphin, DK, and others are now closed. They have said that they are confident of finding an excuse to close all the remaining ones. Firstly all paper work ( licences ) were checked along with staff IDs, if all in order then a reason was manufactured, i.e. being open after legal hours 1 am. Technically all places selling alcohol must close at midnight but for as long as anyone can remember, it has been ignored in the Pattaya. area. I have heard two theories for this. One is that the powers that be think that closing all bars will make the area more attractve to 'Quality' tourists, the 'riff raff' can go to Walking Street to drink. The second beng that due to the declining number of tourists, the bars in Pattaya are losing money, so if they get rid of competition in Jomtien then numbers of punters would improve there. I believe that all the closed bars have been given orders to close for thirty days during which time, they must try to persuade officials to allow them to re-open at the end of it. We all know what that means! I wonder why the local media haven't mentioned this, a major change in the way of life in Jomtien.

  3. Jonathon Wilson was killed in a motorcycle accident in February 2006. I was with him when it happened. There were three of us on three bikes, Jon was leading. A large brown snake crossed the road in front of us just before that sharp curve in the road. He took his eyes off the road for just a couple of seconds, looking back at this large snake and strayed onto the wrong side of the road on that curve. A minivan coming the opposite way hit him head on. We were not speeding, doing probably 40 to 50 kph enjoying the scenery. We had not been drinking, it was early afternoon. We placed that memorial stone there and still pay someone to tend it every month. Jon was a former British paratrooper who had helped raise millions of Baht for charity in the years that he lived here. The other rider with us that day is a retired British police officer.

If you wish to rant about driving standards in this country and the sort of people who drive large cars etc., please do it without linking it to the death of a very fine man. There are many of his friends who read this forum as does his daughter.

  4. I remember about 5 or 6 years ago, the national english language newspaper that we are not allowed to mention on here, published a water quality survey of all Thailand's main beaches. None came up to European safe water standards. Pattaya beach was second most polluted sea in Thailand. The reason I remember is that the worst one was Jomtien!

  5. Had lunch there today with a friend. Very slow service. Food was fine, but his lunch took over a half hour to come. He was completely finished before mine came out. The place was not crowded. I saw some friends there at another table and they said their food took 45 minutes.

The wait staff looked quite clueless, running around asking each other questions about every other thing. It sure looked like they had never been trained and they seemed quite perplexed with the computers. My friend's bill was wrong, but they promptly corrected it.

They have been opened about a week now and it seems to me they should be doing better than this. We were all greatly looking forward to their opening and I sincerely hope they do better.

I too was there yesterday lunch time, 5 adults and 2 children and agree with the above post.

  6. I posted this purely to point out as the title says. Pattaya people aren't all bad. What is wrong with the mentality of so many sad old men on here, that their responses are so purile? Those that live here, get off your <deleted> and meet real people, not just sit at home with the current 'wife' 30 years younger than you while you hide behind your computer screen. Those of you who are unable to live here, don't believe most of the crap posted here!

The problem is that they are so negative to Thai's that they get the negative back.

    totster :D

    Thanks.

  8. Just been knocked off my scooter, some damage to it and a few cuts and bruises to me. Amazingly the Thai who did it stopped and admitted guilt. Left me with his ID card and arranged to meet at repair shop on Tuesday to pay for damage. Usually they just drive off or try to blame the 'Farang'. Maybe it's not so bad here in Pattaya after all!

  9. try this link to the mabprachan animal shelter http://www.caliach.c...s/en/index.html
That's the one. Met the boss couple of times, seems genuine and deserves support. I've got 5 dogs, hence the name, all found wandering the streets in Jomtien. Despite what Thais think, given alot of love and some training street dogs make wonderful pets. Most recent addition is a little all black bitch I rescued from the flood waters a couple of months ago, she was only a few weeks old at the time.
