  1. I went to Cambodia to get a tourist visa to extend my trip by 60 days. In Phnom Penh I used a tuk-tuk and driver that I knew to go to the Thai embassy in the morning. A tout met us at the front of the embassy and said he would get the visa in one day for $30. All I needed was my passport, one picture and $30. He told us to be back at 6:30 pm to pick it up. I wasn't comfortable leaving my passport, but I knew the driver and he said the tout was a friend of his and there was only one tout at the front and he was working out of a small guard shack and he said it would take four days if I did it by myself.

I actually let the driver pick it up since he was taking us around on a bar hop that night. He delivered my passport and it had the visa in it. I was surprised to see it was for 90 days but I was still a little skeptical. I flew back to Thailand and went thru immigration without any problems. I checked the passport and visa and it still had the 90 day date, great.

I changed my return flight at a cost of $250 (thru Delta's office 800#)

In rechecking my passport and visa I discovered a little stamp in front of the actual visa that only gave me 60 days! Now I'm stuck needing to extend my visa.

Here's how it works: A tourist visa is valid for 90 days, but only good for 60 days in country, that means once you have it, it must be used within 30 days.

I bet I'm not the only dummy to make this mistake and I'm an old hand. I've been traveling the Thailand for over 20 years, but I am new to using a tourist visa.

Good luck and read the little stamps.

  2. I heard, so this is not direct knowledge, that you can go to the Dug Out, the old Moto Bar and someone there will do that for you for 1200 baht.

I just went to Phnom Penh myself and went to three travel agents to see if they would do the paperwork for me and they had no clue. I then had my tuk-tuk driver take me to the Thai embassy where we meet a tout out front and my driver "said this is my friend" I know, hard to believe, but he was the only tout there and working out of the small guardhouse. The tout said he would get the visa in one day for $30. I gave him just my passport and a picture and he told me to come back at 6:30 pm. I actually had my driver get it and return it to my hotel. I trusted the driver because we were using him exclusively and he still would make more money from us in the next few days.

When the driver returned, I had a 90 day tourist visa and it worked because, I am now in Thailand.

I would recommend this tuk-tuk driver. He speaks good English and will meet your bus or plane and was always on time, a real feat in PP.

  3. I agree with wcr, it's the thai attitude that's driving me out, only I'm not leaving completely because I already own a condo, so I've decided to travel and spend my money elsewhere just like immigration must want me to. Al the changable visa rules tells me they want me to only spend a few months at a time her, so I guess other countries will get the bulk of my money.

These folks can't figure out that a foreigner brings in a lot of cash with very little cost to the country, basic economics.

Lots of great countries out there, do a little exploring and enjoy yourself.

  4. Anyone know of a cheap room or apartment anywhere in pattaya.

looking for a monthly rental less than say 6000 baht,

can be very ordinary, just for a base to leave stuff when i nick off elsewhere.

    thanks

There's a nice small basic apartment on third near the corner of north road. not much English spoken but the folks there are friendly. Don't remember the name but you will see some bikes parked out front. It was 5000, now likely 6000. Also just down the street from the bus station.

  5. I had two friends that bought condos there and let them go, something about they could not get them into their names because the seller did not even own them. They lost about 80,000 baht each and the elevator was out for three months and they did not fix it. I guess they think the homeowners dues are for profit and not for maintenance.

  6. I live there. It's not as bad as people say, but it does have it's problems like other places. I have and recommend a double, 54 meters, remodeled complete with kitchen. No problems with other tenants except for parking, it gets a little tight sometimes. Each building has a maid that sweep and mops every floor every day and will clean your place for I think 300 baht. They also sweep the streets every day. Carfour is walking distance and everything is available here, convenience stores, laundries, food, two pools, seamstress, bars, gym, travel agents, taxis motorcy and car, etc, etc. Actually I could afford moe but I think it's a good idea to minimize my investment in Thailand with all the stuff the government pulls and actually I've decided to travel at least 6 months a year and spend my money somewhere else. I guess parking is my only real bitch and even that's livable. Shagwell is across the street for a cheap steak and a cold one, cold beer that is. Other condos may be nicer but then they are usually four times as much so they don't really compare. My total outlay including remodel is way less than one million.

  7. Latest update: I went to the condo manager and asked his advice. I'm sure he runs the phone mafia as well as the motorcy taxi mafia on site. He sent a man, likely the phone mafia and my phone was installed the same day. The problem now is my DSL only works sometimes. This may be in internal condo wiring problem, don't know yet so will re-do all connections. Thanks for the help.

  8. I'm having difficuties getting a telephone line and DSL installed. The maintence supervisor, female, keeps giving me false information saying they are working on it but naturally no one is even near my place.

Yesterday she told me she could delay or stop any installation and if I paid a bribe she could make it work the same day, naturally she was not direct when she said this, but I'm sure this is the case.

    What are my options?

I would rather do without a telephone than pay a bribe to some criminal.

I love Thailand but this kind of behaviour sure puts a sour taste in my mouth.

  9. TOT adsl is crap! Mine has been down for two weeks. At first I had no internet at all, no blinking on the modem. They did send a tech out who just agreed it was not working and that I needed a new line, so much for trouble shooting. It's now working at a speed of 54, dial up speed and I pay for the goldcyber and should get up to 1024. I think the problem is likely in the TOT office, like they have me connected wrong or something, but if they won't troubleshoot, how the heck are they going to find it. I may have to cancel the whole thing and go back to a cybercafe, somehow they are always working. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it.

  10. Anyone have any experience with the smart system? I was at Homeworks today and they said I could get 36 channels, mostly English and not have to pay UBC. It's a disc set up just like UBC. The whole system was 7,900 baht.

  11. I just did the trip. Bus from Pattaya to Trat now 165 baht. minibus to Had Lek border now 110 baht. I spent the night in Koh Kong and took the road, minivan 600 baht, going and the road is about 50% finished and all four bridges are about 50% finished. About 6 hours and very scenic.

I returned on the boat and was lucky with calm waters, $15

  12. I only had a visa on arrival so I had to convert to a non-immigrant visa and I only had about 400,000 baht in the bank. My first step was to go to Bangkok, the US Embassy and get a notarized letter stating I had a pension and how much it was. I used the current exchange rate times my annual income and added that to my bank account and came up with more than the required 800,000 baht, then I went to the bank to get a letter saying my funds had been there more than three months.

I went to the Pattaya/ Jomtien immigration office to get the required documents. He only gave me one page, so I guessed at the rest.

Bank book original and 2 copies of all used pages.

Bank letter original and 2 copies.

Passport and 2 copies of front page and visa page.

    2 pictures

That's all I can remember. It went fairly fast and is pretty much a blur.

I arrived at 0900 and saw the retirement officer in about 15 minutes. he promptly sent me to the non-o officer who set up the paperwork and sent me next door to make the copies I didn't originally have. He also collected 2000 baht for the non-o and 1900 baht for the retirement visa. He put a non-o in my passport, then sent me back to the retirement officer, who stamped in my passport a couple of times and sent me behind him to, I guess, the female officer in charge. She checked the paperwork, stamped my passport with a retirement visa, gave me a number and told me to come back at 2 pm. That trip was about 1:15 minutes. I came back at 2 pm and collected my passport, complete with one year retirement visa in about 5 minutes.

The whole thing was painless and the immigration officers were helpful when I wasn't completely prepared.

Before coming here, I was quoted 25,000 baht and 20,000 baht to help me get the retirement visa. they both said they had an inside person to take care of all the details. I guess we don't need outside help to get this all accomplished.

    Good Luck.

  13. I actually live in Nirun and enjoy it. It's not a fancy place, it's more of a Thai village. It's a living, thriving community, The Thai people live, eat and drink in the streets and have always been friendly and respectful to me. I've never had a problem with safety and security is always visible

I own a double unit so I have 54 square meters remodeled to my tastes. Each building has a dedicated cleaner to mop all floors every day and keep the place clean. They also sweep the cobblestone street every day.

I find the location convenient and all motos seem to know where it is, or they know where Shagwell's is. I also like being close to Carfour for shopping and eating.

I agree, there are fancier, more expensive and more exclusive areas, however this is typical Thai. If you want to live in Thailand, this is a good choice. I do believe a single unit is too small, but two units together can be had for less than a million. Figure that on a cost per square meter basis and even $60 a sq. Mtr it would be three million, so for us guys on a tight budget, Nirun is a real bargain and a heck of a nice place to live.

All facilities are available locally, such as convenience stores, barbers, restaurants, bars, moto's, moto rental, car rental, travel agents and I don't know what else. Two pools. Sofan cable. Room delivery by the restaurants.

There are a few negatives as always, parking is tight, as I said, the Thai's live and eat in the street and take up a few of the parking spaces, so this is not the place to live if you own a car, but I always find a space for my moto. I also had to pay 'the man' 700 baht to get my telephone installed. There's a pre-school or something that is a little noisy during the day sometimes on the ground floor but I live on the 6th so I don't hear them upstairs. There are dogs, but no noisy dogs.

We even have an on site manager and staff. I once had a maintenance problem and went to the maintenance office, talked to the maintenance supervisor who wrote a maintenance order and a guy was there to fix the problem within 30 minutes. the maintenance supervisor as well as security often ride bicycles around the area to be available.

All that being said, a friend of mine just paid 12 million baht for a great place overlooking the ocean, then had to remodel it to his tastes. His place is definitely nicer than mine and I would trade in a heartbeat (he hasn't made the offer) but then if they change the rules and I have to leave for some unknown reason, it won't financially kill me either.

Just my 2 cents from a guy that actually lives in Nirun.

  14. Today I went to the UBC desk inside the Sony store next to Index on Sukhumvit to ask about the Cricket match, she called bangkok and they said they have not verified they will have the match. TIT

I'll check again in a day or so. Their number is 038-716297

  15. I apreciate the input on kitchen builders, but now what is a fair price to pay? It's about 7' or 2.3 meters long, no oven, just a stove top and sink with a granite top. I'm just looking for a starting price. I understand everything is negotiable. Do they usually build it on site or in their shop? Are pre-frabracated cabinets available in Thailand?

  16. Thanks guys for the replies on building a kitchen, now about what will it cost, low end, but nice. I'm thinking about 9' (3 meters) long with simple cabinets, no oven, but cook top and sink and maybe marble or granite top. Any ideas?

  17. I guess old age is creeping in. I've just been diagnosed with caratacts.

Any recommendations on where to get this fixed?

How about the "super sight surgery" in Pattaya?

How about the Rutin eye clinic in Bangkok?
