  1. It is only natural that Gran would provide a certain amount of child care part of normal family dynamics.

But are there no decent English girls/students left who may want to do some babysitting? Hardly. Sitters.uk is advertising from £7.20 hour.

There us no reason for the UK to issue a visitors visa for someone who will be undercutting legal workers opportunities so an expat can save a few quid.

  2. It doesn't matter what is right or wrong. They have boxes to check in the Home Office and you admitted that according to their standards, you are a human trafficker. Meanwhile others who have nothing and no connection to the UK, who are economic migrants and never intend to integrate, will be welcomed, mollycoddled and handed state resources. Some of these will actually be terrorists.

Morality being what it is these days.

  3. Mae Rim plaza Tuesday market was pretty much rained out. Only the main food strip stayed. It was a strange downpour...began with a sudden and heavy drenching followed by heavy wind. It eased off/stopped then returned with wind but from the opposite direction.

Parts of the market looked like a top loader washing machine, pulled one way and then the other.

After the heavy downpour, it eased off somewhat but continued on for a good hour.

The vendors selling mattresses didn't look too happy....nor did their product!

You were probably directly beneath towering cumulunimbus and experienced a "microburst".

  4. Think I should have liked to have been born about 10 years earlier. Be that much closer to retirement.

    And to death.

Never know about that. I'd quit tomorrow if not worried about running out of dosh. Then again one could be taken out by a bus on the way to work tomorrow.

Being a young Gaijin in Japan in the early 1990s was great. Heard early 1980s was insane. Foreigners still enough of a novelty very average looking palefaces were getting modeling and TV spots and the gals would come from Tokyo/Yokohama to hang around the gates at NAF Atsugi to pick up guys. Now it seems if you don't have the flash suit and extremely high paying Finance job they could not be bothered.

I know there were a bunch of coups going on but would have liked to have experienced BKK in the 80s, Samui also before mass tourism.

  5. Perfect example. If you go to any Black Canyon in this country and order "iced Coffee champ" without qualification it may have no sugar or 10-15 scoops. Even though the picture on the menu shows black coffee it may come heavily laden with milk. The staff are not properly trained,IMHO, though this type of service may be acceptable with the locals I find it can completely beyond the pale of any normal human conduct and send it back. "Farang complain too much".

    Absolutely no consistency.

  6. I see and agree, I might on rare occasion order a mocha or green tea Frappucino, just like I might occasionally eat ice cream, it's a dessert. I do not agree this is what most people order at Starbucks where the most popular drink appears to be drip coffee. The staff at Starbucks in Thailand always ask if you need room for cream and do not pollute it with any sugar. They are also communicative in the English language and I guess that should be expected at a place that charges the same prices as NYC or London and is often located in "tourist" areas.

Are you in BKK? I hardly ever see anyone drinking drip coffee besides myself. They are all drinking what appears to be some type of blended milk shake piled with whip cream.....
No, Chiang Mai. I only go to Starbucks in the morning sometimes because the 24 hour cafe in my street only serves thimble sized cups of dishwater that make 7/11 taste like the Nectar of Venus.

  8. I was shocked to hear some of the well known big franchises put up 25 spoons of sugar into their drinks !

If they put any sugar in my drink I sent it back.
There is already tons of sugar in virtually everything Starbucks serves as it is made with a pre made base they just throw in the blender. These are what most people drink at Starbucks..... Not coffee, latte, etc.
Rubbish. The only good thing about Starbucks (other than earliest to open) is that they have properly trained staff and consistency.

I speak basic Thai but when I go to other places and order my iced coffee/Americano I have no idea (really absolutely no confidence whatsoever) until I get it. The worst is Wawee. Absolutely no consistency on the preparation of menu items whatsoever.

"Mai sai Namthaan" can mean no sugar, half as much sugar, or 15 scoops. If it is not to my liking I send it back, have not been beaten to a pulp yet.

It has been explained to me "only for Farang no want", and also the local craft expresso Nazi who sneaks half a teaspoon in.

I'm not diabetic so I accept that without complaint.

  9. I had a Lady Americana and it was impossible to sleep on without a thick topper. Got rid of it and purchased one of the really plush

Sealy at Central Festival Chiang Mai. Not cheap but worth every Satang. The top of the line models of Sealy are made in the US. At least the core,

perhaps they are finished locally but enough content to mark "Made in America".

Next time you are in a 5 star global brand hotel strip off the sheets one will see Sealy frequently.

  10. FDX is acts as a registered customs agent for Thai Customs, and that is one reason why they are so speedy. Nothing gets bogged down with

actual customs, but FEDEX does not let ANYTHING slide either.

It is scandalous that duty gets charged on the full landed value including intangibles such as shipping and insurance!

When you really need a part or document fast however it is really an amazing service. I've had a document sent from USA to Chiang Mai in less than 30 hours.

  11. I am sorry but you are suffering a fundamental misunderstanding of a basic scientific principle that is unfortunately quite common. The percentage of oxygen concentration in a given weight parcel of air does not change with altitude (up to about 85km). Air is about 23% O2 at Pattaya Beach and 23%O2 on top of Mt. Everest.

The only thing that changes is the pressure of the atmosphere, and yes for every breath you will get less Oxygen and be out of breath, but you will also get less nitrogen, argon and all the rest.

  12. He wasn't knocked back now was he?

I have never met one who has been other than a guy who quit Thailand as he was tired of being hassled and happy to spend his considerable monies in MNL.

Many are warned but if you go through all of the posts on the offshore workers (oil/gas) subforums supposedly one or two have been denied.

I re-read my post and it was not clear. The guy I mentioned was not actually denied entry either.

He is a senior Captain who was commuting into BKK several times a month (usually from HKG). Staying in a condo in Patts. He reported starting to get hassled about visa exempts and the last time they made him sit around that office which is near the VIP entry area waiting on a supervisor to "get back from lunch". He decides they were just making him wait to make him wait. So meanwhile he books a flight on his mobile somewhere and told Immigration he was no longer interested in visiting Thailand.

The guy is interesting in he is one of a few people I have met who pride themselves on having few possesions and no fixed abode, even though can afford otherwise. The condo he basically got for free from another guy who walked away from it. (Apparently one of those dreary boxes that is impossible to sell). On the other hand he arrogantly believes he should be able to fly to Thailand on visa exempts as many times as he wants because "he spends money". Now he "spends money" in the PI.

I'd rather rub broken glass in my eyes. As for the criticism of my use of abbreviations I'd think the IATA code for major airports in the region should be easily understood by most expats but for others here's a brief glossary.

    BKK: Suwannaphumi International Airport

    HKG: Hong Kong International Airport

    Patts: Pattaya City

    The PI : The Phillippines
