I am looking for feed back and doing some tax planning to legally keep Tax at a minimum
First of all are any members aware of either expats or the wives being subjected to a tax audit in Thailand
There is a rule that says monies held overseas are not subject to tax here; subject to the income not being remitted to Thailand in the year in which it is generated, this is very generous, and used by the super rich Thais to keep tax at a minimum, it is also available to everyone
Monies remitted from pension are also tax free
It follows on that after ones death, capital needs to be kept outside Thailand so the wife can continue to benefit, I already have accounts up and running in wife's name, over which I have irrevocable power of attorney, just in case
The jurisdiction needs to be chosen carefully, also with easy access for the wife and Singapore I believe a good choice, she could fly there and back in the day, they also have representatives in Bangkok, it has to be simple my wife is financially illiterate, and she will be the only one in control, with written guidelines, (DO NOT TRUST LOCAL ADVISERS)and for the negative wife hating brigade if she cashes it all out and spends it after I am gone that is ok !! not my problem
I am slightly concerned some of the monies held have gone through wife's Thai account, hence my question on audit
When in a previous life I always used to change companies, Vat registration and Bank accounts regularly, so if ever audited there was a limit as to how far back they could check, I never intentionally did anything wrong and this was just good insurance, and stopped the ability to go back for ever
Likewise it might be a good idea here to change bank accounts say every four years
Thailand has to be one of the tax friendliest countries to sensible sophisticated tax payers, or shall we say non tax payers

All a big wind up when 500bhatt solve the problem

Get frames and lens from Zenni - very good price and service to Thailand.
Thank you lopburi3 , i note you added the web address, however even before that I checked it out
Excellent affordable prices, especially as only simple glasses, no variafocal etc
She only uses for driving, I offered her laser surgery but she said no, in the evening if I have been drinking she always drives, so self interest to see has a reasonable chance of seeing OK
It all comes from China by Hong Kong post so will order a test pair, and if OK as I am sure it will be then a second spare pair, but if i order two now save one lot of postage at $9.95, has to be two now, and still way down on one at Big C
Way Way more competitive than Big C my normal supplier, check it out Kwasaki
My wife used to say I was cheap Charlie, today she knows thats not the case I just do my best to shop intelligently
-
I need some guidance
My dear wife has lost her glasses again, these things happen and thats OK
I am trying to buy replacements at good competitive cost, so I go to my favorite Lazada, I can find nice frames but no lenses any ideas
(I bought my stepson new cell phone from same source last week for 500 Bhatt cash on delivery)
Could just buy the frames and hope she does not notice ! !! !!!

Some will say they cannot live on one satang less than 100-200K baht per month. That may be true for the lifestyle and area they have closen to settle, but not true in rural Thailand. My opinion.
I do not believe this is about what you can live on, could be as low as 10,000PCM, BUT what he needs for his desires etc, very different

. Obviously he thinks he needs all this stuff....but you can only ride one bike at a time etc. Choices....Choices.
But women can do more than one at a time, unlike bikes

Obviously you're experienced with living in Thailand, and only you know what you do and don't need, so why are you asking others when you can easily figure out your own answer?
I believe the man like many of us more cautious expats, needs some validation and sensibly put it on open forum
I see the thread is now turning to mushroom farming, and many new ones are springing up around us in Issan
Maybe they do well here as the philosophy is keep in the dark and spread sh*t once a year, a motto of some governments, note I did not suggest the Thai Govt

I don't have the money you have but I have never been happier in my whole life than I am today.
I put this down to a few things.....I do my best to live one day at a time , in the now.I make plans but realise that the results are out of my hands so don't think about them too much. I live every moment with an Attitude of Gratitude (there were times when I had a lot more material stuff, inc. money but didn't realise how well off I was.
I see the families in the London fire, I see the boat migrants drowning escaping wars etc., etc., etc., and say " there but for the Grace of God".
I know this stuff has nothing to do with your question but sometimes a reminder to " count our blessings" can put many things in perspective.
A nice caring post, I think I can echo all your comments, fortunately just for today my finances are reasonably sound, but nothing compared to years gone bye, and that is OK
I was reading many other replies, and come to the conclusion there are many many unhappy, angry, and discontented Thai Visa Posters, fortunately I am not one of them, happiness spreads and heals if you allow it
God Bless today on, Fathers Day

How long is a piece of string
I live in the sticks Issan and use 120,000 per month, on a good month
I also generate around 22% PA on my investments, I self manage, I am a retired FCA, (Chartered Accountant)
Be very careful of those wanting to give you investment advice, Thailand and asia are very full of rip off merchants, my wife ten yrs knows all I have, and that gives me comfort
Medical insurance ??
What government pensions
For comfort levels I would suggest 15M with house and car paid for, but many will say you could be OK on 5.0M
We have 2.5 people helping us, and live on a small plot 5 rai !
Be lucky Be careful and stay safe

In fact some of these folks have tried many times to pressure me and my Thai son for handouts, in fact on a couple of occasions they have been pretty nasty to my son but he's strong enough to simply ignore them. And some of them even claim they are entitled by Thai law to a handout on my death (this is the 'make up the law as it suits you' gang).
At the moment my will is vague on this subject so the Suan Doc route route and a stronger statement of no handouts will be added to my will next week.
Many similarities, fortunately my wife is on my side
She is under instruction, and agrees when I go, she just says most of the money was spent on hospital bills and she has very little left, hopefully not the case
In the event I am not successful on donation she knows max 3 monks and costs to a minimum, I am pretty sure she will follow that, she has two teenage children and their education costs to think about
Does anyone know if KhonKaen has similar hospital cremation option

What a beautiful photograph, I spent twelve yrs plus on my own boat in retirement traveling the seas
Could be buried at sea ( not just the ashes scattered) and body donated to the fishes, but that really would be a challenge in Thailand
I started off topic but got back on ! !! !!!
On the other hand Morgandave suggested the local horticultural college, not for me
However six ft down in our own garden beside the dogs also OK in fact very OK, but maybe in Thailand a problem, can be done with various permissions in England
I buried a couple of puppies 3 ft down and planted on top a bourganvillia five yrs on so magnificent, like the puppies
Hopefully another ten yrs plus, keep smiling
Remember humor and happiness heals
It:
Reduces pain. Our bodies produce pain-killing hormones called endorphins in response to laughter.
Strengthens immune function. A good belly laugh increases production of T-cells, interferon and immune proteins called globulins.
Decreases stress. When under stress, we produce a hormone called cortisol. Laughter significantly lowers cortisol levels and returns the body to a more relaxed state.

That's just plain stupid. The Hospital in Korat only wanting organs. I bet there's not many of them that can play the damn things.
I find on a reasonably serious thread some of the replies objectionable
And then it gets many likes, even more difficult
But then generally I would not associate with many of these people
As a retired professional man getting older, with some serious medical problems, I am still shocked at the opinions of many expats
We choose to live here, and enjoy what Thailand has to offer, many good things; but that so many vent anger and venom I find hard to tolerate
Maybe I have to look at me and try to become more tolerant
We all have rights of opinion, well thats the case from where originally I come from
God Bless, as I go to bed with my loving sleeping little wife, so caring , so kind so loving, yes thank you God

Life is difficult but it seems to me being dead is also difficult from what I read here.
" 13 hours ago, thaibeachlovers said:In NZ it's not easy to donate a body. They only want one if they can get it straight after death. I was hoping to avoid my estate paying to burn me, but it seems I have no choice."
An observation, Chulalongkorn in Bangkok, insist a body is delivered within 24 hrs of death, I live in KhonKaen, and my wife and I believe we can meet this requirement, with planning
This requirement is sensible and understandable especially in a tropical climate
My reason for Chulalongkorn is at the moment they have given me a reprieve from two cancers, and some very loving care, of course there are no guarantees and it could all return, but so far so good
My wish by donating my body is to say thank you, in a positive way

It's hard to believe that I have to spell this out but how about an earthquake. Or perhaps an explosion something that makes it impossible to descend further only to find that there's no way to go back because the doors closed behind you

You are the ideal profile for bungalow living
What about walking outside and getting hit by lightening
What about motorbikes in Thailand

Get a girlfriend in Vietnam. No need to come back to Thailand then
I live happily here in Thailand
However, Thai bureaucracy gives us a hard time , maybe if starting this again I would choose one of the other countries in the region
Get a girlfriend in Vietnam is sound advice, but I expect you will already have one there
Good luck

I was the executor for the estate of an American friend who was in her mid 80s when she died in Chiang Mai. She wanted her body donated to medical science and I found the process to be fairly easy. There was some question about her age, but she had been very active, walking at least a mile each day, to and from her condo to the local mall for shopping and socializing prior to being struck down by a stroke. Her doctor vouched for her overall condition and her donation was accepted.
The "paperwork" involved in the donation wasn't any different for her as a foreigner than it would have been for a Thai person. She had requested this in her Final Will and as the executor of the Will, I was able to sign the necessary documents upon presenting her Thai death certificate. I simply had to present the Final Will and hers and my passport, along with the death certificate and they made copies of all these, to submit with the application.
About a year after the donation, I received a letter from CMU, in Thai, asking if I cared to submit a photograph of the lady to be used for display at a memorial service. A few weeks later, they had a service at a wat where photos of all the donors were displayed, monks chanted prayers and medical students (presumably the ones who had studied the donors) attended and gave honor, along with their professors. Each donor was limited to having two guests attend. No remains were returned. It was a nice ceremony and good way to honor the donors.
A nice and comforting post, a nice surprise
There is so much anger and venom on TV that sometimes I think about ceasing to participate, it is compassion like this post by Nancy that keeps me here

I started a similar topic a while ago, and I think it is feasible at Chulalongkorn in Bangkok, I have more appointments there at the end of august and will investigate more then

Not logical
Generally we know when our passport is going to run out ignore it and do not worry Ok for some
But why start worrying now a little normal responsible advance planning and no problem
Self inflicted wound I think
Good luck stay relaxed

Thai s generally are very bad at repaying loans, hence the credit card companies will only let government employees have them
First of all many towns give and pay for new roofs when blown off
Suggestion just say you do not lend money, maybe GIVE 10.000 to 15,000 bhat as contribution
Another comment 100,000 for a roof very big roof maybe a full temple
Good luck be careful

What is the point of the four Alsatians as 'security' if people are still coming to house so easy?
My post did not say it was easy for people to come to the house, electric gates kept shut all the time, which have to be opened from the house or car
Visitors have to wait at the gates by which time they are also on CCTV
All my security systems self installed at minimal cost, and only a deterrent, the professional will if determined get over anything but will also be going for specifics, and we have nothing other than a few TVs to take

Im renting a safe deposit box at Siam Secure for a few years now and Im very happy with it. Its open everyday from 10 to 10 and most holidays.
But this is in Pattaya, not Phuket...
So I want to identify someone to rob, I watch Siam Secure and follow you home, and add you too my list of possibles
We have no safe, we do not need a safe, however I often think about a cheap safe, with very weak bolts not too well hidden, and a lot of fake jewellery inside, if some one came with a gun and said open they would probably grab and run, it would also make them mad later but still ok
We have four Alsatians plus the wife, and also closed circuit TV, and many lights on PIRs
Wife wants a gun but I say no unless she is properly trained and has all the liciences
If anyone comes to the house for money I normally say please wait for ten minutes while I go to the ATM even if we have the money, so people moan he never has money we have to wait while he goes to the ATM, word soon spreads
