The ratio of male-to-female cases is about 2:1
Unprotected gay sex might be a factor here. Though it would be "politically incorect" to say so.

There's no way around it!
By closing both airports the PAD held about 100,000 people hostage. Some escaped, some died trying to escape, and the remainder were eventually allowed to leave.
Not all hostage situations fall into the Islamo/facist category. This was more like Thai/Buddhist/thug category, something admittedly unique.

there were nightly grenade/bomb attacks!
All we know is two grenades went off.
For all we know they mishandled some misappropriated munitions and accidentally blew themselves up as so many terrorists are apt to do.
What is clear they had the support of both the military and the police. Where's the courage in that?
What would be courageous(or stupid) is if I had walked up to a PAD thug and stuck my finger in his eye.

They didn't terrorize the passengers.
Yes they did, by denying them the "privilege" of going home on their pre-arranged terms. Some died!
There's nothing noble or courageous about them when they're for all practicality subscribed by the military.

Any expat who feels totally comfortable here is either blissfully anesthetized, totally clueless, or lives as monk in a state of enlightenment.
And that's that!

advice on a tricky situation?
Yea....stay the heck out of it. Let the Thai people sort it out.
Better yet go take a trip somewhere, so you can be away.

It's really an international outrage to essentially hold 100,000 tourists hostage. Many died as a result of unfortunate traffic accidents from haphazardly arranged ground travel.
These people should be held accountable.
But no what's the first response? Tighten immigration rules. We should be under no illusions how the "Farang" is viewed here.
The should be an outcry against this outrage amongst expats. They are terrorists plain and simple.
It will be interesting to see how the Thai Airways legal action against the PAD fares.

What a stupid OP.
All that waste material is quickly metabolized by the plants and soil.
The OP should be more concerned about how many thai farmers spray pesticides liberally just prior to harvest.

^ This is misinformation, sunflower seed oil is very healthy.
Check your facts.
Last I looked it was widely available in Makro.
Another alternative to sunflower seed oil is sesame oil for cooking. It will sustain high temps without burning also.
Sesame oil just adds a little more taste which sunflower seed oil doesn't.

I've been talking with a few people about the slow season being a lot slower than last year.
Does anyone have a finger on what the bookings are looking like for the high season?
Will the slow down continue?
With the rise in fuel/food/airline tickets world wide the slow down seems likely to continue.

Some of the Samsung models offer superb(canon, nikon, olympus) quality for half the price. Shop for function over style.
I bought a L73 model for 5000bht at Carrefour. Truly a fine piece of equipment with the easiest to use features of any camera I've seen.

If you're worried about getting ripped off best to avoid Phuket altogether. But if you can afford the Landmark and the Amari you clearly can afford all the petty little ripoffs which abound in the tourist areas.
Don't worry be happy.

BigLou: Don't worry too much. Most sensible Thai people have recognized long ago that American are the best farangs to have around.
Avoid the cesspools of the tourist havens.
If you aren't here on a mission to destroy your liver as many of the german and brit denizens of Thailand seem intent upon you will likely avoid 90% of the "ugly farang" syndrome.
Bear in mind the slower pace of life here and the inherent xenophobia within this country.
Most foreigners who have problems here are the ones who have failed to grasp that difficulties aren't handled effectively through noisy confrontations.
Don't worry be happy.

Christin Massage in Patong is generally a well known hangout.
Since when is a fishbowl style brothel an expat hangout?

, you'll have to wait for a diesel
The Ford Focus is available here with diesel.

But yes, I'm the nervous type! Can I get an extention for just a day or two ? Can I go to the immig office in samui ?
You should be able to get a week extension on a 30 day stamp. I costs something, used to be 1200 baht, it may be 2000 now.
That way you're covered in case your flight is delayed or something happen to make you miss the flight.

Get out and cruise around on a motorbike with a pen and paper and gather phone #s.. You'll find something quickly.

The Swiss Delight in Chalong serves a nice german wheat beer in a lovely frosty tall glass. 150 baht for a big bottle. Nice for a change and it's pretty strong beer 2 bottle and you trunk will fly open.

The Rawai pizza place is worth going out of you way for. They don't open till 18:00 and get crowded after 20:00.
Capanninas in south Kata beach is also well worth going out of your way for.
The original pizza place in Nai Harn was taken out by the Tsunami.
Speaking of good Italian Salvadores in Phuket Town is well worth a visit.

Panasonic A/C units are tiptop. I bought 8 units from 9000btu to 25000btu, no problems.
Toshiba seems to have the best value for the money in fridges. Don't know about washers, the one I bought I don't like, forget the brand.

I've been here four years now, drive a lot, and have yet you encounter these nefarious scams. Sure I've noticed how the cost fuel has nearly doubled .
Seems like a person would have to stupid or asleep to get burned at the filling stations these days with the fancy digital technology.
Biggest problem is when the sun's shinning on the LCD display making it hard to see.
If you're afraid of being ripped off then get your narrow butt out of the drivers seat and out of the car to watch what's going on. (what I always do just to stretch my legs)
Sometimes people are so clueless.

Sometimes I get a bright red rash (not itchy or raised, but feels hot) after drinking a lot,
...abstinence is not an option !
Perhaps moderation should be your option.
Skin problems are often symptomatic with early stages of liver toxicity and impairment.
Consider yourself lucky to catch these symptoms early.
It's a bit of a drag to catch liver problems after full blown cirrhosis or liver cancer has set in.
A wise person heeds these warnings.

Regardless, good ganga is readily available nearly anywhere in thailand.
You have to be stupid not to see it. it's pretty much everywhere.
The spot tests are bullshit.
