  1. "Find him and charge him with attempted murder no matter who he is..." And then let him go to Singapore for a "psychiatric evaluation". Hard to believe the stick given Thai police considering PDRC doesn't want them anywhere near, army has told them to stay away. Then piss and moan that the police aren't protecting them! Of course they are corrupt, and of course Taksin et al are corrupt. They are all corrupt, all sides! As such, it is not a factor, like 2+2=4 is still valid if 2+2+ corruption = 4+ corruption. And why a Russian grenade? I want to blame Americans!

  2. Seems might be useful to ask who gains and who loses from such incidents. Seems the protests are running out of steam, so this sort of thing could "energize" the movement. Army and/or police might see as opportunity to grab more power. Police incompetence points somewhat at them, but incompetence seems to be standard procedure. The military could see as opp to grab more power (still wondering about the navy men with silencers at rally the other day. Security would not need silencers, so they are suspect). "I am at a loss as to why team rouge feel the need to attack hospitals" I agree, which would make it slightly less likely they would be behind this. But then again, I am applying logic to an illogical system. And it is not like any of the groups have some sort of cohesive command structure, so rogue, not necessarily rouge, elements could do this from any of the groups... I know! Blame it on the USA!

  3. "We will neither negotiate nor compromise. The People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) will fight until we win"

Clearly he has no conception of democracy. Seems he is a) insane b)wants to be dictator c) has powerful friends who keep the boys with nets from returning him to the sanitarium d) total narcissist e) typical corrupt Thailand politician.

Choose all you think fit, and add to if you wish. If somehow his puppet masters win, it will be a Pyrrhic victory, and short lived at that.

  4. "Bottom line: flirtatious girl was killed by jealous boyfriend - two persons whose lives have been ruined, let alone their families. Unfortunately Thai society is so embedded with the concept of 'losing face' and pandering to immature males throughout their lives that it would take 'centuries' of education to change such behaviour."

Second bottom line to that. We do not know if she were a "flirtatious girl", do we? Seems equally possible that perhaps if it were a boyfriend he could have been dumped by her, maybe for his chasing of other girls, or drinking/gambling, or even she got tired of his anger issues. But probably has to do with "face" plus the lack of ability to move on, compromise, see others point of view, etc in this culture.

  5. "Luckily the vehicle was fitted with a GPS Tracking device and over a 2 day period the signal was monitored by Police."

And why, pray tell, did they only monitor it for two days? Why not go there right away? Were they checking to see which big cheeses might be involved in this, give them fair warning to cover some tracks? Or perhaps just a simple way to keep a couple of cops "busy" at the station?

  6. "There are places set aside on the beaches for people who do not want to rent beach chairs. Certainly the Thai people running the beach concessions have a greater claim to ownership of the beaches than some penny-pinching tourist who wants everything for free"

<deleted> (whatever that is meant to convey...). I have lived in Jomtien for about 8 years now. Those chairs are a blight and abomination, blocking and destroying the beauty of a beach. About a year ago the decision makers took almost all of the free concrete benches away, supposedly for "crime prevention", or so I was told by cops overseeing it. My belief is that it was to force people to use those crap chairs by the umbrella/chair mafia. Same goes for brutal removal of trees that provided a shaded walk along beach, and near Soi 6, for example: you can sit here, but we will take away the shade.

I am from Oregon. State constitution says beaches belong to the people. Period. ANY sort of building, blockage or infringing with commercial venture violating the rights of the people to a clean and natural beach are dealt with quickly and decisively. How about just half of the beach for those businesses? 90% of the time those chairs are 90% empty. I never use them. I don't want to support ugly. And I have plenty of money.

  7. "After just 10 minutes the fire was extinguished but Investigators were unable to conclusively pinpoint the cause of the fire which is thought to have been started by an electrical short circuit."

Hate to rain on the parade, but it just ain't so. I was across street playing some music with friend when it started. Got some photos, but they never seem to take when I try to post them. Anyway, about ten minutes in a pickup truck from FD came, then maybe another 5-10 another showed up. I left a few minutes after that, and it was still going strong. Didn't see a firetruck on walk back to condo. I would guess (and only a guess) response was from station off of Chaiyapruk. Maybe pickup trucks had fire extinguishers? Seems would have been reasonable to have a few on hand at the market. There I go again.... My guess was electrical, as shoddy seems to be fitting description of most wiring I have seen in my years here, and even more so in a market like this one. Wish the Hollywood Pattaya truck had somehow been there and burned....

  8. "This kind of shooting will continue to happen in Pattaya while it's still full hookers and western retards. I booked to go for a week and lasted 3 days there. I couldn't honestly say I met one half intelligent person, during the whole trip. Just ask any self respecting Thai what they think of the foreigners who go there. "Née sai mai Dee", will most likely be the answer."

I just love the generalizations by those who were only here three days. I think there is some element of sour grapes that they haven't got the internal sense of self to navigate thru certain places that are not like Salt Lake City. I have lived here in Jomtien for maybe 8 years? Started coming to Thailand in 82, never came to Pattaya before 2002. I rarely drink, don't waste time in bars, don't take whores home, etc. I have IQ in top 3% btw. "the whole trip"? 3 days? Where were you looking for intelligent people? My take on anyplace is "just because there is dog crap in the road doesn't mean you have to step in it".

  9. "there is no Act of God incident which will require the election to be postponed,” he added." But wait, there is no God in the Buddhist religion! Suthep is willing to play the part, although will downgrade his status and pay scale. Current elected government is like deer caught in the headlights of the Old Guard Bangkok Elite. The experiment with democracy didn't work out as planned, the common people do not love them for their decades of crony theft, and voted in new gang to mess things up. Bring back the efficient thieves! The army wants in on this, they are just trying to figure the cost and wonder about the loyalty of their troops, as the cannon fodder is from the common people.

  10. There is the saying "time is money" but here "time costs money" re: "The trial comes after a series of delays in securing evidence, despite Thailand’s leading forensic police being dispatched from Bangkok to investigate the fire".

"Also taken someone's money from them can hurt someone just as badly as a jail sentence" I disagree. If this were true and they were equal, then we would see some opting for jail time. And the standard theory is that the punishment is imposed as much to deter others who do not act according to rules as it is to punish. Could probably write expense of payoff as a business expense on taxes, but then again, who pays taxes, other than VAT?

While they are at it with indictments for negligent homicide (I think that is what charge ought to be), how about adding the government inspectors who perhaps signed off on "inspections" and said the place was up to snuff? The police who looked the other way for a fee and allowed this place to stay open after hours? It was a group effort you know....

  11. I would suggest to those who have some fear of Muslims that they perhaps go meet some? Generally they are decent gracious people, have good values, and seem to be more mentally agile than the norm. I lived in Phra Kanong near the mosque. My only complaint was the fact that condo I rented was on 7th floor, about level with speakers calling to prayer, but you can get used to many irritants. Maybe being in a minority, they have some sympathy for a farang like myself. And could get some good Southern Thai food, which makes standard Thai seem almost like English fare... The idiot grenade thrower that blew his own leg off was from Iran, can't really hold that against the locals.

  12. Thailand's educational spending highest in the world

That would mean their productivity is the lowest in the world

It doesn't mean that at all. Productivity is measured by cost and hours worked. If no one eent to school, could productivity still be measured? Of course.

Sorry, but productivity is measured by result or output, divided by cost. Productivity of closed factory is 0. The results here regarding learning are appalling. It is not the amount of time you spend at learning something, it is the result (come to think of it, 0 is a measure). If you spend your school time sleeping, texting, etc and not learning anything of value, then perhaps better to not waste time there. If no one went to school, you could not measure productivity of school, as there would be no output, no student learning at school to measure. If I were a parent here with a touch of intelligence, I would home school if possible.

  13. I think it would be useful to look at 3rd party issue like a potential crime, with standard questions of means, motive and opportunity. Both sides have means and opportunity, so big difference is in motive. What motive might YS et al have to incite violence against protestors? Little to none I would think. Overall they have shown remarkable restraint against the protestors, much to annoyance of Suthep and others. Protestors are running out of options, can't seem to provoke the army (their long time friends and cronies) to wade into this mess. If violence and spark more violence, this would give the "go" card to army to step in and "restore order", have a coup and then the unelected Suthep and his old rich friends will be back with things just the way they want. And go after corruption on the red side while ignoring all that goes on and has gone on for so long on his side. Back to business as usual.

  14. "No blame on the Thai man, just blame the alcohol, for MAKING him do unusual violent confrontational actions" This is joking, isn't it? At least I hope so!

Balcony rails are often insanely low here, as MJP pointed out (who would argue the contrary?). Guess they don't want to "spoil the view" which is even more wide open during your rapid descent from said balcony.

  15. "I can't imagine there are many farangs who have not been assaulted or very close to being assaulted and robbed if they have lived in Pattaya for some time."

I would suggest that you work on your imaginative skills then.

I have lived here in Jomtien for about nine years now, and never been in a situation where I felt possible threat. But then again I don't get drunk, am not stupid enough to wander around at 4 am where my skin color identifies me as a possible target and money source. Blame is for being stupid.
