  1. Tourists can use cash or card at those few vendors who won't receive cash - like STARBUCKS - they can use a card. Even for small amounts. No country would base their decision on a strategy like trying to formalize the economy on the needs of tourists - even if a major sources of FX revenue. You can just see the huge acceptance and growth in the use of QR Codes by the Thai public to see how popular this is. We see 40% annual increase in volumes with a combination of both more customers and even more markedly each customer using the system more frequently each day largely for QR based payments. I would predict that QR will be replaced by some national or international contactless solution similar to APPLEPAY or GOOGLEPAY but without the exorbitant fees involved. Again, QR in Thailand is free. And (almost) every phone has a camera. I would note that there are many more stores in the UK and in the USA who do not accept cash than there are in Thailand. QR is largely offered and embraced as an option with cash still welcome. In the UK that is not true
  2. This (QR) "formalizes" the economy so that the authorities can better see the flows of funds. There is a lot behind this and it is very valuable to tax collection and for economists. It also saves cash because they spend a lot to print banknotes and to recycle. Plus the big Fraud problem on larger notes. Also, this is convenient for poor people because it does not require them to maintain a "float of cash". Like a Noodle seller who may need to get 1,00 Baht in 20's and 1,000 in 100 Baht notes in order to make change at the start of day with cash would no longer need to so with Promptpay for most purchasers. For people like me it means I do not have to go to the ATM - even though I do work in a bank. And it automatically gives me receipts. Which makes it easier for reimbursements. Plus paying bills and transferring is so much easier. You can display the QR code for you for Promptpay and users do not need to know your account number or phone number. And this works for Push and Pull payments. Many benefits and almost no disadvantages I can see as long as you are not running some kind of weird business and do not want the authorities to know about income.
  3. Please see this thread. I helped RrtiredThailand. If you need to move a large amount - in the millions of Baht - we can give you a special rate. And as I said I have helped many people on this forum over the years. So PM me if you need to move a large amount. A few hundred thousand Baht will not qualify. This is like buying Wholesale and not Retail.
  4. As said so many times before, if anyone needs help please PM me and I will get somebody to contact you on an official Bangkok Bank channel. This is a very popular service. My son is at UCL in London and I send him money ....... often. PM me please if you need help
  5. Then you should get an FX contract from us and a better rate. PM me please and I will give you my email (please do not share) and then somebody from in the GPS group will deal with you. Thanks
  6. Please give a rough idea of the amount that you plan to move. If this is over about $60,000 USD, you are better to negotiate an FX rate with us (Bangkok Bank) in Thailand. It is like buying Wholesale v Retail. Then when you send the funds it will refer to this FX arrangement and you will get that rate. But it does need to be above an certain fixed amount. Building a house varies widely in cost and I have no idea of the amount involved. If you go to a branch or to our HQ on the 2nd floor you can ask them for details. This is not complex. PM me if you want more details and I an refer you to the Global Payments group who will deal with you directly. Thanks It is NEVER beneficial to move a foreign currency to THB offshore in a developed country (maybe ok in Myanmar, Lao or Cambodia) Ian
  7. I didn't read this whole thread so please excuse if already answered There is no need to open an account. We do offer accounts but the are not FDIC Insured. And as I said no need if you just want to move funds. This link will help. If you still need help the please PM me Ian Transfer money from the US to Thailand via Bangkok Bank’s New York branch
  8. I will get you the actual requirements from our Consumer Banking people, hopefully with a link to our Website so you can bring this with you.
  9. Understood For anybody in the UK you an contact London Branch, in the USA you can contact New York. Contact details are on our Website www.bangkokbank.com
  10. You can contact our branch in New York and possibly they can help you. Please PM me and I can get somebody to get in touch with you Ian
  11. To enhance transaction security and application efficiency as well as support new features, upcoming Bangkok Bank Mobile Banking versions will only be supported on iOS version 13.0 & above and Android version 7.0 & above from September 21, 2023 onwards. Bangkok Bank Mobile Banking
  12. Without any specifics I can't really answer, ANDROID is a hard one because it is Open Source. Most (80%) of our customers use ANDROID and the vast majority have no problem. If you look at SCB or KBANK on Play you will see many issues with it not running on certain devices too. I would call 1333 to get some more expert help or I would send me your details I can get someone to help you. Please do so ONLY via PM not on this public forum. SCB uses FLUTTER for ROBINHOOD which is designed to use a Canvas to prevent such problems, but even that App has problems if you look on PLAY. So as I said, ANDROID is a challenge We support from ANDROID 7 up I believe.
  13. OK. Here is the answer I got from the guy who is the overall Tech Lead for MB. I run Digital overall, not just Mobile, and have hundreds of staff (who are 99% Thai). This guy lives and breathes Mobile Banking. "You can use a second phone to register/activate mBanking app. During the activation process, users will be asked to remove the previous phone (to confirm whether they want to use a new phone instead)." So you can do it as a part of the setup of the new phone. I thought it must be this otherwise you could end up with no functioning device for some period in time, but I will only ever tell you what I know, not what I think. Thank you for your interest in Bangkok Bank
  14. Actually I have no idea, let me ask my team. When I did it recently I did not really take note of all the steps but it was really quick. I will ask and get back to you. I used to have 4 or 5 phones registered before this BOT regulation.
  15. The Bank of Thailand no longer allows banks to provide Mobile Banking on multiple devices. So we need to limit it to one active device. So when you add a new one the old one is deactivated.
  16. We protect against VM's which is a hacker tool to run various kinds of attacks. We use multiple approaches to detect this
  17. Like I always say, if anybody really can't sort this out I can get somebody to help you, so you can PM me and we will deal with this all offline, and not on a public forum. Hijacking accounts is one of the major attack vectors so we (and all banks) need to balance convenience with security. I have setup several new phones with no problems at all using SMS. If you are not in possession of a registered Thai SIM that is an issue for the SMS, but if you do have one you can activate from abroad, we do not block that as with other banks. On another subject I also saw a lot of discussion when reading this forum on FCD (foreign currency deposit accounts) and some banks needing you to move money into THB they back out again. Here is a link which explains a lot for expats in Thailand with a particular focus on FCD. I keep multiple FCD myself and it is really straight forward. Again, any questions about your own personal banking situation with Bangkok Bank please PM me. This is NOT an officially supported Bank channel and I drop in occasionally to help out them we will move to PM. I have helped many forum members over the years and this is not a sca as the moderators will confirm. Please click on this link or please use GOOGLE to search "Bangkok Bank FCD Account for non residents" Ian FCD Account for Non-Residents (bangkokbank.com)
  18. FATCA "The Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), which was passed as part of the HIRE Act, generally requires that foreign financial Institutions and certain other non-financial foreign entities report on the foreign assets held by their U.S. account holders or be subject to withholding on withholdable payments."
  19. One last point. We do not block access to our websites or our apps from abroad. I use the al the time (tomorrow in fact I will be overseas). But we do block countries with sanctions in place
  20. Clearly as a bank we can't talk about exactly what we use or how it works. But there are proprietary solutions which absolutely allow us to see "through" most commercial VPN's. If we can't see through it we will block it. IP is so easy to spoof that we would never rely on it for a location. Sorry but I do not mean to be evasive. But you can understand we would never name the exact products that we use.
  21. It applies to FATCA and to other controls. US citizens are subject to FATCA checks. So it is not your residency, or the location of the Bank in some cases. It can also be affected by the Citizenship
  22. Because somebody was providing details about Vanguard which they noted was a US company. Also I noted that SCHWAB have a pretty good UK presence so it may work for the SHCWAB UK App too. Seems reasonable to me. Maybe not to you. For those relying on VPN, we have a product which allows us to "see through" VPN. And while we do not block we do know it and it can count in a risk rating. Others do this too. So do not think that most VPN are invisible/transparent. They are not
  23. SCHWAB app works from Thailand. Plus you can use your Thai address and not have to hide behind the address of a friend in the USA I assume SCHWAB UK App would do the same. That is a hunch. I do not know it and do not use it even though I have UK citizenship too.
