  1. Having lived in Thailand for 14 years I have been a regular purchaser of both Schweppes Tonic Water and Manao Soda, usually in the 6-can packs, never individually. Recently I am finding cans either almost empty or leaking after a couple of weeks and making a disgusting mess in my cupboard. Never had this happen before about 4 months ago. In the UK you'd simply take the faulty product back to the store where you bought it and get a replacement but in Thailand this is not usually the case. Just wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience recently and if so, what did you do about it?
  2. Thank you everyone who posted a sensible and helpful reply to my question. I will check googlemaps and make a note of the address.
  3. Hi, A while ago someone in a post said there is a good used book store just off the Khao San Road. Doing a search on the Asean Now site is hopeless, cannot get anything relevant to come up, so am asking if anyone knows the place. I thought I'd made a note of it but am unable to find it now. Thanks in advance to anyone with info.
  4. Interesting that the last item in the list (copied from the original article) says legal services are not permitted by foreigners, yet there are definitely foreign lawyers working here, in Bangkok, Phuket, etc. and have been for years. Occupations completely restricted for foreigners: Wood carving 2. Motorcycle driving, excluding forklift operation 3. Auction 4. Gem cutting/polishing 5. Hairdressing/beauty salon services 6. Hand-weaving fabrics 7. Loom weaving or manufacturing using straw, bamboo, chicken feathers, yarn, etc. 8. Handmade paper production 9. Traditional lacquer making 10. Thai traditional musical instrument making 11. Thai niello making 12. Gold/silver/platinum smithing 13. Stone carving 14. Thai doll making 15. Alms bowl making 16. Hand-woven silk fabric production 17. Buddha statue making 18. Paper/fabric umbrella making 19. Agent/broker services 20. Thai massage 21. Cigarette rolling 22. Guide services 23. Street selling 24. Thai alphabet arranging services 25. Silk thread spinning 26. Secretarial services 27. Legal services
  5. Re. the reference to Toms Guide, will this work if the old phone's number is moved to the new SIM card?
  6. I have today been to the two bank(Bangkok Bank and SCB) where I have accounts, and both refuse to act as witness to ID for the compulsory Life Certificate to continue getting my pathetic frozen pension. This must be a new tightening up of bank restrictions for foreigners as I have had no previous problems during the 14 years I have lived here. Bangkok Bank told me, after telephoning their head office, that I have to take the form to Immigration or the British Embassy. Just a heads up for other UK expats.
  7. To Bangkok Barry's post specifically Do you actually have an email address for the UK pensions? My UK pension has not been paid into my account for 2 months so can only assume that the last 'proof of life' documentation never reached me. Their website is useless and I cannot find anywhere I can email them or phone regarding non-payment of an existing pension.
  8. Oh great. How long before expat residents like myself collecting family or friends from the airport will get stopped and accused of working as an illegal taxi driver? Will they believe the tourist who insists that they are not paying for the ride? This could turn out to be a headache for those of us who are quite legally depriving the Phuket taxi mafia of a fare!
  9. Interesting to read other places complaining about the lack of decent milk around, I thought it was just Khok Kloi, Phang Nga where I live. The local Lotus is out of milk more often than it has any, if you aren't in there the day they get a delivery forget it! Rubbish compared to when it was Tesco, and that wasn't impressive. Today no milk there, 3 branches of 7/11 also none apart from mini bottles. What is going on?
  10. Hope they're wrong but long-range weather forecast says rain until 4th DECEMBER!!!! Time to build an ark?
  11. Reply to Sheryl Didn't know we could get expat cover that is not total health care cover, which is very expensive. In the past 12 years our health care costs have been equivalent to 2 years' premium costs so we have saved a lot by being self-funding for health issues. Guess we could see what sort of insurance the airline offers (if any), I know some airlines have policies for the duration of the holiday.
  12. We are a British couple living in Thailand for 12 years. We want to start travelling again but our pre-Covid insurer (who was based in UK but covered us anyway) does not cover anyone over 79 years and my husband is now 80. (I'm 72). Anyone know of a site that offers cover for travelling FROM Thailand to other Asian areas for old fogies? We are both in good health with no major medical conditions, no medications. Trouble is all the sites I seem to find want you to be resident in the UK for cover and I have to search in English as I can't read Thai.
