  1. The twice daily MK staff dance

Needs to be seen to be believed. Would be classed as a crime against humanity in the West. Thai diners pretend nothing's happening while I don't know whether to die from laughter, pity or pure shame to be watching it from outside.

My nephew worked in MK in his Summer holiday. He said it was embarrassing at first, but customers seemed to like it and it calmed down the crying babies. So, he didn't mind doing that and amused himself with it. That's a good attitude.

The strangest thing I've seen when I was on bus 38 and a dog came in, sat under the seat by the door, took about 2-3 stops and then got off the bus like he knew where he was going. The fare collector said it was not the first time.

  2. Further search give me this result.

    http://www.cpn.co.th/shopping/centralplaza/shop_detail.asp?id=1753

It's in Thai though. It's the list of Central Plaza with this export shop

    In Bangkok, there are:

    1. Central Plaza Ramindra, G floor

    2. Central Plaza Chaeng Wattana, G floor

    3. Central Plaza Bang na, 2nd floor

    4. Central Plaza Pin Klao, 2nd floor

    5. Central Plaza Rama 2, 2nd floor

    6. Central Plaza Rama 3, 2nd floor

    7. Central Plaza Rattanatibet, 2nd floor

    8. Central Plaza Lardproa, 2nd floor

  3. I have the same problem, too.

In addition to not being able to view old conversations, I couldn't view messenger at all unless there is a new message. If I have no new message, when I click on "Messenger", I'll get a blank page. If I have a new message, I'll be able to view the messenger screen that shows new messages, but if I click on old conversation folder, it'll give me only blank page as well.

  4. So this guy paid off the Thai government to cancel his visa so that he "can't come back"... It means the police got paid and he can now say "See, I was innocent afterall!".

An alternative to the popular story here in TV, which usually involve evil Thais plot against saintly non-Thais.

If he's guilty and has a way to make sure that his visa will be revoked, he'll be blacklisted and expelled, this would be the best way out. He wouldn't have to stand trial and his position in the media will change from a suspect of paedophile case to a victim of the authorities. He returned, but didn't have a chance to fight in court, very heroic. His reputation won't be ruined. It's probably the most elegant way to get out of this mess in case that he's guilty.

If he's innocent and came back with intention to prove his innocent, I'm sorry for him that he ran into this problem. I hope he could manage to sell/manage his properties in Thailand, but it still sucks when you are banned the country you started to get used to.

Anyway, it's none of our business to judge both him and the person who expelled him, unless you know any of them.

It amazed me how people who kept muttering, "Innocent until proven guilty", didn't waste much time before they accused police, immigration, etc. And many Thai-haters posts are still not moderated. TiTV?

  5. One of the things I am astonished by is how Thai people defend their country/people and get upset with anyone critizing anything about Thailand,

when they themselves are the absolute individuals with no regards at all to the wellfare of their own country fellow men/women.

If someone is being ripped off because one doesn't come from Thailand and express anger about it upset you that much,

wouldn't it be better for you to write something like, I whish we could treat forreigners better than we do.

There's a saying, treat others like you want to be treated yourself. Actually found in most religions,

even Buddismen but then again, you "stole" buddismen from India and almost proclaim it as yours only.

I wish we could treat foreigners better. But also I wish you have a better logic in this. Does that mean all christian countries "stole" Christianity from Jews as well? Most Thais know it come from India, know the name of the buddha, the town he was born, the name of his parents, etc. I'm not sure where you heard someone claimed that it's Thai's only. That person must be really crazy and stupid, that kind of people is not exclusive to Thailand though. It's just like if someone claimed that Christianity is Vatican's. Do you think there are people like that?

If you got rip off here, you got my sympathy on that. But to bash Thailand for the sake of bashing is just pathetic.

  6. post-9233-069863800 1279040215_thumb.jpg

This sign is in Florence, "In Italy purchases of counterfeited goods are punished by law with sanctions up to 10,000 euro." Note that at that time I was there (2006), I haven't seen this sign in any other cities in Italy.

Using excuses from some people here, it would go:

    - How dare them to fine a tourist who bought counterfeit goods up to 10000 euro.

    - Don't they know that most tourist doesn't read sign, or read about the local law in the place they're going

    - Bi<?> (I forgot color of Italian police uniform) must be desperate for money. They just used it to extort more money from tourist

    - Tourists love counterfeit products, this will damage tourism

    - Police should ban those sellers from bringing counterfeit products to the city, not fining the people who buy them

    - Lawmakers who approved this law are morons

How could being ignorant is acceptable when you're a tourist?

One of the reason why police didn't do anything about it before was because moving elephant is not an trivial job. Most just pretended they didn't see it. Now they'll have to be active about it because it's their job to fine and catch the mahout and discourage people from supporting the mahout this way. There is also an organization that provides truck and specialist to transport elephants out of the city if needed, e.g. mahout is jailed or ran away and the elephant is left on the street.

The police may have a problem at night anyway. I don't think the elephant transporter would work at night. So, if they caught the mahout, what could they do? They couldn't jail the mahout because nobody else would be able to take care of the elephant. I don't think that they will waste their time following the mahout just to see where the mahout will stay during the daytime for later arrest.

Let's hope that they'll put enough sign to inform tourists not to feed the elephant in the city and to call the 1555. They already put enough info in Thai media, so Thais are quite well-informed about this.

If there is no sign warning incoming tourists about this new regulation in Bangkok airport, you can inform tourist information center next time you land. Or write to airport authority. It's better take action by yourself rather than just complaining. They should put English signs in the tourist area in the city as well, but I don't think they'll. Sorry about that.

  7. Why book you're ticket at a travel agency? Book it at internet, strait with the airline. Cheaper and safer.

Certainly safer, but not cheaper, especially the big airlines, i always check and they are always 20% more expensive online.

Moreover, most deals from travel agency are refundable and rebookable (with fees). Most special direct deals from big airlines are non-refundable and not rebookable. I usually got a cheaper rate from travel agencies and haven't been cheated yet. I only bought from trustworthy travel agencies in Bangkok though, never bought from a shack with a cardboard sign in Pattaya.

  8. I wonder what kind of people you guys are hanging out with. Are you sure they were in a school at all?

In my generation (I was born in 1979), Thai map and southeast asia is taught in primary school, world geography in secondary school, Thai history in lower secondary, World history only if you're major in arts/literature in higher secondary school. So, no wonder they may not know who Hitler or George Washington are, but they should be familiar with Thai history if they were in school. Most people who finished secondary school have pretty good idea about where Thailand is on the map and can point at some big countries on the map correctly.

As far I know, our standard in mathematics is pretty good. Everybody who graduated from my faculty and took GRE got more than 740 (of 800) in Quantitative section, most of us got 780-800. Those in my faculty came from many schools, including public schools. In International Math Olympiad, Thai team usually got some medals every year. It was in 7th place last year.

We are weaker in English compared to Singapore or Philippines. The other subjects are just average.

I think it depends if the people you know had access to school, and if they did, how much attention they paid to their own education. Sure, some teachers are morons, but there are libraries and self-learning. I feel sorry for those who couldn't afford to be in school. But some were in school, but just wasting time there.

It's amazing how many people here can't wait to bash Thailand as a whole, just because they know some unintelligent ones, or surrounded only by those. If I use the same logic, that would be applicable to many other nations as well because I also know stupid people from various countries.

Note that for all those issues you mentioned, you can check on YouTube how well Americans on the street were doing. The title is "Americans are NOT stupid". I think it was done by an Australian channel as a joke, so they only show the dumbest ones. I'm sure not all Americans are like that.

Peace (we all need that, especially in Bangkok).

  9. Another article written from thin air. How could they blame social network sites for the drop in number of readers when they published an article like this?

By the way, at the time I'm writing this, 1894 User(s) are reading this topic (1451 Guests and 7 Anonymous Users). Guess the headlines is too tempting not to read. ;-)

  10. About supporting family, pension is not common here. Many people rely on their children. So they invested in their children and hope that the children will take care of them when they grow old. The child was taught to take care of their parents as well, that it's part of their obligation. That's the basic.

I'm Thai and your question was about what she was thinking. Here is what I thought it could be in her mind, based on what you explained.

Love grew on the first half year. However, when you were away the first time for a month, I think she became paranoid, as many Thai women do when their significant others are away for a month (men are pigs, they screw around whenever they can, farang = promiscuous). I think that's when she started seeing someone else. Sign? Stories about helping her aunt, working late, drinking with uncle and went back home without calling you. She might help her aunt sometimes, but also used that as an easy excuse whenever she wants to go out. It's stupid because that means she was two-timing you and do what she was afraid you were doing, but she's in early 20s, right?

Then you gave her an ultimatum, she chose you and came back. She stopped seeing whoever she was seeing at that time. You two lived happily again.

Somewhere along the line, she needed the money for her mom, you refused it. Question is if her mom really needed to have that money for the treatment. You mentioned that her mom had some health issues, so maybe it's true. Could you help her at that time? Does she know that you can afford to help her? If both were true, in her mind, you don't really care about her family at all. Why should she stay with you, doing dishes, cleaning the house and do all the things housewife do? She might even think that you may think of her as a maid more than a girlfriend.

Thais don't talk much, but that doesn't mean that they don't think about it. If her mother really needed that money for hospital and she knew you could afford it but refused, you must be really selfish in her eyes. She may just kept you because there was no better option at that time.

So, when you were away this time, I guess someone else is coming to her. In that case, would you blame her for jumping to the new guy?

I agree with many people here that you'd better move on with your life.

Just my two cent. I don't know either you or her. Please don't feel like it's an accusation. I just wrote it as an alternative story because many people here only think that Thai girl = gold digger.

  11. It's a bit weird though. I think I heard in the news yesterday night that the most dangerous area was "Sukhumvit 101", not "Lardprao 101". They also interview some people from the area as well. It was about 10-11 p.m., but I didn't pay much attention to it because I was having some late night snack in another room, so maybe I was wrong.

The news said that the reason was because there are many shortcuts to other streets in that Soi. The interviewees said that most people who lived that have experienced some crime either directly or as a witness. Most crime is the bag snatching, but also mugging at night. That's all I remembered.

IMO, I think Sukhumvit is much more dangerous place than Lardprao. Lardprao is kind of boring place and not as crowded as Sukhumvit.

  12. Very zen indeed. :D

It's quite easy to sleep. Just close your eyes, empty your mind and relax. I think we Thais practised this by meditation since we were young. Only difference is that in meditation, you focus on one thing. To sleep, you focus on nothing. :D

I once asked my b/f why it took him so long to fall asleep (it usually took him half an hour after light-off to sleep), he just said that there were many things in his mind and he needed time to shake them off. I have a complex and demanding work as well, but I don't have much problem to clear my head when needed. I'd credit that to the meditation training.

About the position, I'm not sure if I can do the one with legs on the wall, but I can sleep on a chair with my legs over the armrest, or on my back on the floor with my legs on the bed, or "the thinker" pose (convenient in lecture room or library). Somehow most Thais like to sleep with their arms and legs bent (I just looked at old photos or me and my friends). How the other parts of the body will be is up to the environment and imagination. I'm glad many people here find that cute instead of weird. lol :D

    Just my 2 cents :)

  13. I'm Thai and somehow I didn't notice many Vietnamese when I was in Thailand. Mainly because we look so much alike and it's hard to identify them from the crowd. But during my stay in Germany, I met and knew many of them in the university. :D I like Vietnamese, they are friendly and polite, hard-working and dedicated. However, they're quiet shy and hardly speak, even amongst themselves. In general, I like them most, amongst other international students, but I wish they would be more extrovert. :o Who knows. Maybe they might also wish that I would shut up sometimes. :D

  14. No offence, just comment.

Just that people in my circle of gay friends (around my age, 26-29, Thai) found the guys who abide by no-sex-on-the-first-date rule a bit annoying. It's totally fine if he's a really emotional kind of guy that need to know someone better before getting intimate. But if he came onto you all the evening and in the end, said that let's do it the day after at his place just because he has a rule not to have sex with someone on the first date. And believe me, those people do exist. Either they read and abided by a must-not on the first date or probably they forgot to 'prepare' for the late evening.

Anyway, it's usually ended up with my friend called some of us, ranted it out but went meet the guy the day after anyway. So, I guess it's not that bad. But I think it would be better not to wait half a day because if sex part doesn't turn out well, it would really be a big disappointment. The kind that he would let every one knows and even put it in a blog if he has one. If it's good, it's just good. I've never heard them say, 'it worths waiting for' before. The fact is the guy left him hanging, so it 'has to' be good. I don't think patience is our virtue.

As said in the beginning, just a comment. I'm sure people in the other age range would find it differently. But I believe it's more about attitude than age. You know your date and you know what you want, so you'll know what to do in the end. If you don't know it, don't do it.

  15. second dates: usually a bit more informal, cycling, museum visits, etc.

dated a guy once and we had a great picnic! nice food, we brought books, etc. i remember cos he read the da vinci code and i brought lemony snicket's penultimate peril!

It's hard to find english book here in Germany. There's always only a teeny, tiny shelf for English section even in big book store. Mayersche here is 5-storey book store with only 2 shelves for English books, filled with Harry Potters, Artemis Fowls (no offence) and Terry Pratchett's books (yikes!).

Mid-popular titles like series of unfortunate events were never there when I was there. Had to order it with penultimate peril and already pre-ordered 'The End'. Hope to get it on Oct 13. Have you read Beatrice Letters yet? Is it worth buying?

btw, its not vulgar! its useful information!!!!!! im sure some people out there will back me up. yes? yes? do i hear anyone??..:o

ooohh btw, im listening to paris hilton's new album. its fabulous! love it. played it in my office and my female colleagues liked the songs till i told them its paris hilton, then they said "oh". take that, bitches!!!

I second that. Both about useful tips you gave and Paris' album. It's nice tune. I played it to some thai friends here. They kinda liked it as well but when it came to Stars are Blind, they knew who sings it and just blurted out disappointedly bias 'oh' as well. #@!#@!@##

Back to the topic, most were mentioned already. For me, I just be clean, on time, casual and honest. And that's all I expected from my date as well. About timing issue, I usually called my date 5 minutes before meeting time, telling him where I am and ask him where he is. That way I'd know if my date would be late or not. If he'd be late, I can go shopping or do other things rather than hogging a table for 15 minutes with just a cup of coffee, waiting for him. If I would be late, I usually called my date as soon as I'm sure I'd be late so that he wouldn't have to wait for me at the meeting point alone too long.

Planning ahead, be around the meeting point before meeting time is much better, unless you're really on a tight schedule. If there is really nothing interesting around the meeting point, bring a book. It could also be a conversation material as well. I won't recommend a magazine because it makes you look cheap and also not a newspapers 'coz it makes you look like opa.

Sex or no sex? Go with the flow, if you'd like to and he'd like to, do it. Small teasing is fine but playing hard to get or pulling a britney is so yesterday.

  16. i have to tell you this. i sent my bf a basket of fresh flowers with a white teddy bear to his office. he went nuts......but his co-workers, mostly women......all want to meet me in december. is this some thai thing?? ah well.

once again, thanks for your comments!! take care.

I could understand why his colleagues wanted to meet you. If my colleague got a basket of flowers and a teddy bear, I'm sure almost every one in the office would like to know who was his secret (at least to them) admirer. Some do want to know, so that they can look out for him (about you) and sadly, some just want to compare you with their own guys/girls, depends on how popular your guy is. One thing is for sure, they're serious about wanting to see you. :o

Isn't it the same thing over there? I don't think you'll just nod if your colleague got a basket of flower. Small talk/comment is usually expected but would you want to see the basket sender? Or just don't care at all?

    :D

  17. Are you talking about 'Uncle Go'? :o

Yes, it's that column! I think it's in a magazine called 'Plak'. Does it still exist?

I don't think so. An Australian guy, Peter Jackson, wrote a book based around some of the letters:

"Dear Uncle Go: Male Homosexuality in Thailand" by Peter Jackson.

I've never read that book from Peter Jackson. I forgot the name of the column but the column owner is call "Go Paknam" (โก๋ ปากน้ำ) and he called himself "Uncle Go". The magazine is either "Plak" (แปลก) or "Mahadsajan" (มหัศจรรย์). And I think it's one of the first column in public magazines that published gay stories. Most of them are letters explaining their experience with questions at the end and "Uncle Go" answered it. Most of the questions was asking for advice on what they should do next, sometimes asking about possibilities of STD infections and etc. It's erotic (in experience part) and educational (in Q&A part) in some way.

I think I was 13 or 14, when a straight boy "experimented" on me. Nothing serious though, it was all gropping, that lead to french kissing. The following year in High School, more straight boys experimented which lead to one thing to another.

The first ever gay sex thatI had was when I was 19, which was very late, in asian perspective. :D

You're not alone, I had it when I was 20 and 'after' graduated. While most people considered college time the prime time for sex-periment, mine? mostly spent on trips with friends, playing network games, help parents in shop and some part-time jobs.

  18. Thailand to target deposed PM's assets

Forbes magazine in July said Thaksin is Thailand's fourth richest businessman with a fortune worth R2,2-billion.

Who are the three? The ones richer than him? Would be interesting to know.

....and what is R2,2-billion? Is that Rand, Ruppees, Baht even, or Dollars or Pounds? I'm a multi milllionaire in Vietnam and Italy, really!!!

It has been Euro in Italy for years already. :o

Back to the topic. I just read in another newspaper, the Council for Democratic Reform under Constitutional Monarchy (CDRM) said that they have no plan to seize Toxin's asset by themselves. They will let NCCC investigate and take care of that, which I think it's quite generous already, in addition to the fact that they didn't freeze Toxin's accounts from day 1. And as far I know (from newspapers), his accounts are still not locked, which is what I couldn't understand.

I don't think they should just seize all the assets. Only the amount they found that it's not legally obtained should be fair enough, plus calculated interest and fine for damage he caused, of course. That could worth all he has in Thai banks and properties. Somehow I don't think it would make him poor. Poorer than when he was PM, maybe. But while investigating, shouldn't it be safer to freeze the account, especially when the account's owner is now abroad.

  19. My mistake. I clicked on view result before I voted and now I can't vote anymore.

How come I'm the only bookworm? I've known that I'm attracted to men since I was in highschool. But about sex, I learned it from a magazine. There was a weekly magazine my maid bought back then, it was kinda magazine about unusual things such as believe-it-or-not or world records on weird stuffs. In that magazine, there were two columns that printed reader's sex stories, one is for str8 stories and another is for gay/lesbian. That's how I learned about gay sex.

Are you talking about 'Uncle Go'? :o

Yes, it's that column! I think it's in a magazine called 'Plak'. Does it still exist?

  20. My mistake. I clicked on view result before I voted and now I can't vote anymore.

However, the first time I had a gay sex was when I was 20! Very late start but somehow I think I did catch up ok in the last 6 years. :o Before that, I almost had gay sex a couple of times but I freaked out. First time was in a book store when I was about 13-14 (I was not in adult section if you wonder. what's wrong with those people?). I freaked out and walked away to security guard. The other times were mostly in pub/bar with my friends, was mostly approached when I was in the toilet (away from the horde) but I was too shy back then. So nothing's happened until I was 20.

He was my first boyfriend afterward. We broke up about 8 months later because we both wanted to see other people. ...[parts deleted]One thing leads to another... :D. Not so easy but quite memorable. :D

Am I having a nostalgia? No!

(greatly edited by PB, to keep it educational more than explicit)
