  1. Ramdom,

Electricity is costing me 3.3 baht per unit.

I also have a figure of 0.5683 on my bill but that is not the price per unit.

Link originally posted by lopburi3 some time ago:

    Cost of 616 units:

    150 * 1.8047 = 270.705

    250 * 2.7781 = 694.525

    216 * 2.9780 = 643.248

    Service charge = 40.9

    ------------------------------

    Sub Total (1) = 1649.378

    Fuel tax factor * units = 0.5683 * 616 = 350.07

    ------------------------------

    Sub Total (2) = 1999.45

    7% tax = 139.96

    ------------------------------

    Total = 2139.41 baht

    :o

  2. I leave the 'puter on all day, so I can see what's going on most of the time. I guess that means I'm on-line about 16 hours a day, but I'm not always at the desk, looking. I would say 5 or 6 hours actually looking. :o

  3. 95 to the pound would be nice. :D

round up to a 100bht per quid - hate uneven numbers :D

Don't want to be greedy :o

Either would be great for those of us with income from outside Thailand! :D !

Wouldn't want to be earning a Thai salary, however high, with the inflation those exchange rates would bring........ :D

Yeah! The cost of Marmite would soar... :D:D:D

  4. For the last couple of months I've been getting rid of some verrucas and corns from my feet. They've nearly all gone now, but I was wondering how common they are given the Thai custom of taking off your shoes/sandals/flip-flops and walking over somebody else's clean or dirty floor.

I never had a verruca before - neither in England or Bangkok - but they appeared after a year of living in Phuket.

I am now quite loathe to slip off my flip-flops if I enter a "clean" Thai shop or house as I don't want to go through the same pain as I just have.

Anyone else have a problem with them?

  5. because I thought that a new subject title might generate some response, but I was wrong as obviously knows the answers! I have insurance already so can't ask them. thanks.

I understand, but I still think it's worth asking your insurance company if they can help. I believe most insurance companies will do the yearly registration (900 baht?) and get the compulsory government insurance (Por Lor Bor - 1000 baht?) for their clients, so they should be able to help.

Have a look at this old thread: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=34790

  6. I loved the photo in The Bangkok Post a few days ago of Michael Bolton arriving in Bangkok;there he was looking all the 50 odd years he must be, sagging cheeks and wrinkles and directly below was a half page advert promoting his concert with a fresh faced, 20 year old Michael gazing into the camera.  It looked just like father and son!

    You can be so cruel.

    :o

  7. I dont think that the countdown on the traffic lights is a good thing.

I have seen so many near misees at traffic lights because everyone waiting 120 seconds (A lifetime for a Thai) wants to get off on 119 seconds. Those with a green light counting down to zero dont want to wait 120 seconds till the next green light.  Result.... BANG

I dont know if they have these types of lights in BK but they are now very common in Chaingmai

Yes, they're in Bangkok - at the top of Wireless Road near the express way entrance/exit and elsewhere. They're also in Phuket at the major traffic lights.

I actually think they're a good idea because you can see from a long way back if you've got enough time to get through on green. So you can judge whether there's any purpose in speeding up a little to get through. And you can also give up trying to get through if you're a long way from the lights and there's only a few seconds left.

But the best aspect is, when they are red you can see how long you have to wait. So there's no point in sitting there, drumming your fingers on the steering wheel thinking "when are the dammed lights going to change". Just sit back and relax.

  8. ...If this is a “my pen rai” attitude or “live fast die young be a good looking corpse” thing.

I recently posted about two separate moto-cy accidents that I saw right in front of me in Phuket last week. And then a couple of days ago I saw a woman turn left in front of a car that was pulling away from some traffic lights and was going straight on. The car braked and missed her. I don't think I would've reacted that quickly.

Back to your original question... I think it's neither a case of “my pen rai” nor “live fast die young”. It's more a case of not being able to predict what will happen more than 1 second into the future.

  9. In case the site developers don't know about this problem, I've posted this picture. This is what I get when I try to edit the name of an entry in my SMS Phone Book:

    tvsmserror8ty.jpg

Apart from that, all working perfectly, messages sent and received OK! (On DTAC)

    //Edit:

I just moved this post from the original "Rollout" thread because I didn't see this "Bug Report" thread. (Fingers quick, eyes slow :o )

  10. Once you have captured the screen shot goto start -->all programs -->  accessories --> Paint.  Click on Paint, click on "edit" then click on "paste" and the screen shot will appear in the Paint window. (for those conditioned to using the mouse cursor)

    -a :o

Yes, I use "Paint" that way too when I don't have Compupic running. I also find "Paint" easier to use for joining bits of pictures together and for general editing of pictures. And best of all, it's free. :D

  11. what program did you use to get that screenshot ?

Back on-line after a few days without telephone line...

As meadish said, I just hit "PrtSc" - "Print Screen" - which is next to F12 on my lap top.

If I have my favourite "digital content manager" running minimised - called Compupic - then it automatically restores itself with the screen dump as a new image. I can then crop it to show just the bit I want. When I save it - as jpg, bmp, etc - I can reduce the quality so the file is small: a "before" and "after" window is displayed so I can adjust the quality down until I see a loss of detail. Then I tweak it back up a bit so it looks OK, but the file is still small.

And I use Imageshack ( http://imageshack.us ) as my image hosting web site.

You can get a free trial of Compupic Pro here: http://www.photodex.com/products/compupicpro/

  12. Solar plan lights up province

.....Mae Hong Son, one of the nation’s poorest provinces, has the largest number of households in need of solar-cell plants.

    --The Nation 2005-11-26

I have spent considerable time in villages, many literally akin to villagers in Mae Hong Son, without electricity and later spent time in some of those same villages that later were reached by EGAT including my wife's village. I have not seen where the supplying of electricity has made any impact upon the economic situation of the locals. And in fact the building of all-season roads and the adjacent electric poles has often led to what I perceive as a sadder village with less laughter heard and less joy of life observed.

How do you connect good roads and electric poles to sad villages?
