  1. Yyou have not been in Thailand that long ,i neverheard the word farang during the two years i worked here. Expats were described by thier nationalites like khon angrit, khon american etc,

We made an effort to learn Tha1 , and mixed freely with them. We ate Thai food and dressed  decenly,we did not get iny fights or trouble, we were respected and kiked by all Thais

Returning to Tthailand several years later i heard the word farang used ro describe new expats they were a whole different breed from when i  was here last.

Their behavior and appearance caused the Thais to label them as farangs.and lose respect for them.

So naturally I am offended if any one calls me a farang being put in the same class as a  farang whin includes a lot of undesrable types.

Check out the figures, oh, and note the 702 arrivals yesterday.   You're obviously very upset at the Phuket Sandbox, I think more because of it being singled out for special treatment compared to the rest of Thailand.   You have a point, and I for one think it grossly unfair that so much vaccination effort has been direct to Phuket at the expense of those areas with greater positive case numbers.

However, Phuket remains the only complete Province (not a city or an island that's part of a greater province) where entrance both internationally and domestically can be controlled, and hence was in reality the only candidate for this experiment.

The TAT had to do something to justify its existance.

Booster shots? So is this to imply that there is some confidence that the whole population will be vaccinated sometime next year? Lol or do they mean booster shots for those poor people that had no choice but accept the sub par sinovac that was offered? Like my wife who understands that some vaccine is better than none so has taken a jab of sinovac whilst we still wait for the moderna we paid for 2 months ago to arrive.

Well Thailand is certainly doing a marvellous job. 16,000 deaths as opposed 1o 160,000 in the UK.

Awesome Thailand, UK/US  never got even close to this percentage of the population in one day. Makes me proud to be Thai, but felt <deleted> after my vaccine on Friday.

Can't believe there are two negative Normans complaining already.

Just look at the UK with 10 times more deaths than Thailand. Trump Clone Boris Johnson obsessed with brexit ignores the pandemic. The hyproxity of brits on this forum bashing Thailand when their own country fares so badly is pathetic

There are a number of differences between UK (English society) and Thai society, there are also some significant differences between how each Government reacted to the pandemic.

Unlike the UK Thailand does not have large numbers of old people living in ‘care homes’. in The UK these have accounted for very large numbers of COVID deaths.

Housing and lifestyle differences are also significant. In Thailand much more of daily life and interactions take place out of doors than in the UK. Outdoor markets, outdoor restaurants and generally spending time outside rather than in the house.

Mass transport is very much much more used in the UK than in Thailand. Motorcycles are used more than cars.

All these activities outside in the fresh air compared with people in the UK being predominantly indoors.

The response of individuals has also been significantly different, mask usage in Thailand started very early in the pandemic, is and has always remained nearly 100% compliant. Temperature checks and hand cleansing is near universal.

There is no anti mask, anti lockdown sentiment, people in Thailand have supported the public health response.

The government responses have also differed, The UK government started off with its failed herd immunity experiment which resulted in a large number of deaths early in the pandemic.

One particular difference I and others have noted is the part local community leaders play in combatting the disease.

In the community I live in we’ve had a case of a young couple arriving from BKK but not following isolation. They were forcibly taken into isolation.

We’ve had two cases of positive infection, these were announced on the village public address system.

I arrived this week from Chonburi/Bangkok where I’ve been to get my vaccines. The local health official called the day I arrived to check my health and vaccination documents, without which I would have been required to isolate.

I’m staying home anyway, but the local community leaders are on the case.

I doubt many in the UK would accept such intrusion into their lives.

Two entirely different societies dealing with the same virus, each in their own way and hence each seeing a different outcome.

Trump clone, Boris Johnson obsessed with pushing brexit through ignored the pandemic resulting in a death rate 10 times higher than Thailand even with the smaller population

Brits who criticise Thailand regarding the pandemic are just hypocrites.

  6. A rather silly post you think all people are the same like you. You are not even average expat. You spend more in Thailand for food than you would in UK probably the only person that does so. One of the reasons most people I like living  here is because of the marvellous cheap Thai food. Probably one third or less than  what it costs in the UK even if you like the odd Western food, it's a lot less than in the UK.

  7. It is not about money. I have had my ups and downs. But the best time in my life was when I had no money at all.

Pattaya 1965. I had lost my job. I stayed with a Thai friend who owned a very popular resort, restaurant  and boathouse , he gave me free food and drink (beer) and accommodation overlooking the beach. We went spearfishing nearly every  day in his boat. The water was crystal clear and teeming with large fish, including sharks .I gave him most of my catch which averaged probably 25 to 50 kg a day. I kept a few fish in his freezer for myself which I gave as tips to accommodating bar girls.  I did this for nearly six months.

I think a real opportunity exists for one agent to negotiate with the Immigration  Department to offer a full service for long term residents like retirees and those married to Thais.

This would entail doing extensions with income statements and 90 day reports, residence notifications etc  as usual for say two or three years (with agent’s help)

After this qualifying period when the bona fides have been proved, the agent could do all the reporting, no need to prove income or residence to Immigration, just submit bank statements or residence changes to agent who does any notifications to Government including 90 day reports.

This would be via a proper functioning website and database, to which the Immigration Dept would have access for monitoring and audit purposes.

There would be no need for people to visit Immigration offices routinely with thousands of photocopies  which would save the Department and applicants cost.

I would be prepared to pay reasonable.fees say 5000 or 10000 baht per year for this service, a portion of which could go to Immigration to help cover their costs.

I appreciate that this may not appeal to the Immigration Dept staff who think they would lose jobs, but this could come from natural wastage and cessation of recruitment, or redeployment to enforcement activities.

This is fundamentally a privatization of the routine processes of Immigration like companies like VFS have done for passport renewals. As long as it is regularly and randomly audited, I think it could be effective.

Current agents would be subsumed into the business.

Interested to hear if anyone thinks this could work in Thailand or if it’s just a pipe dream.

Yes it actually does. I used Thai visa immigration service. I didn't have to go to immigration I simply posted my passport and I got my retirement visa extension and  they will do the 90 day reporting for me until my next extension due in one years time. Their fees are very reasonable and I can't possibly see any advantages of having an elite card ,

  9. What do you mean by "..your country". Thailand is my home therefore Thailand is my country. I was born in Sri Lanka when it was a British colony. My parents were Anglo Irish having lived in Sri Lanka for three generations I went to the UK during the war and went to school there. I left immediately after I finish school when I was 17 and went back to Sri Lankaand have had no connection with the UK since then and my parents moved to Portugal.. I left Sri Lanka due to political turmoil and came to Thailand where I spent most of my time since. It annoys me when people asked me where are you from all which is your country and when people talk about home have to wonder why they live here.

I just received my 1st shot 2 days ago at Hua Hin Hospital.

First shot is SINOVAC. Second shot will be ASTRAZENECA and was also given the appointment date during the process itself.

I was quite impressed with the organization, and execution of the whole process, from entering the facility, to resgistering my attendance, administering the shot and the 30 minute waiting period. Although there were quite a lot of people there for the shot, social distancing was observed, and the attendants, nurces, etc all communicated well in English.

From arrival to finish,  it  took about 90 minutes including the 30 minutes resting to check if any immediate side effects.

Hats off to HH hospital for a good organization and service

I presume that you are over 60. Is that correct?

I would think so. You can probably live on the pension alone, if you don't go too berserk and/or find the wrong woman. But I don't have a full UK pension so don't know.

Capital? I read somewhere 60/40 split. Which is what I intend to do. 60% invest , 40% keep liquid.

Some British banks don't like non-residents holding accounts. Maybe someone else will elucidate.

Lloyds has an expat/offshore account as do others

there is no real answer to this question. It depends entirely upon your background and what you used to. I have very many wealthy expat friends. They employ a gardener, a maid and a driver. They eat expensive food and wine. They travel abroad once a year and so on. But I also have friends who live very well while avoiding all expats and live in a nice Thai environment, they don'T spend much money.

I don't get why he 'has' to go to Norway. There are various options to be vaccinated here, especially at his age. Many governments are not vaccinating their own people abroad. As an 'elderly' Brit I have been vaccinated by the Thai government

you are lucky I am 90 years old with a lot of chest problems. I have to go government hospital once a week for treatment. I can't get a vaccination unless I go to Bangkok. I am disabled and cannot travel very far it is five hours from where I live

Depends very much on where your 'motherland' actually is. Some are worse than here, not many any better.  As for the UK, my so called motherland, I would rather stick needles in my eyes than go back to that basket case of a country, covid notwithstanding.

I don't understand this talk of home. If you come to Thailand and live here in Thailand is your home. For me is the only place I have no other home. I was born in Sri Lanka went to England during the war returned to Sri Lanka afterwards. When things got bad I came to Thailand my parents live in Portugal. I hate being  asked where am my from. Many Thais and foreigners ask me this question. I have no answer. So if another country is your home what are you doing in Thailand are you a tourist just here for a short visit or what. ?

  14. I am 90 years old with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and many other lung problems like chronic bronchitis
I'm a British subject I tried every possible means to get a vaccination but failed. I think at least the British consular section should do something to help people like me and others in the same situation. I would obviously like to stay at home and not go out. But I have to go to hospital for medical treatment twice a week.
