CHIANG MAI: -- A Chinese tourist drowned in a downpour-triggered flash flood at Ban Huai Sathan (Moo1) in Chiang Mai's Mae Taeng district on Tuesday.

The incident occurred when an 11-strong Chinese tour group suddenly found themselves caught in floodwaters.

A woman, Yang Boyang, 26, fell into the torrential creek in Tambon Keud Chang and drowned at about 5pm, police inspector Pol Lt Colonel Sakhon Kaewsa said.

Her bruised body was later retrieved 500 metres from the scene and was sent for autopsy to the Mae Taeng Hospital. Police are contacting the Chinese Consulate to help contact the victim's family.

Thai tour guide Jaiphetch Khamleu said the group was trekking in Huai Sathan area and everything was normal in the morning and early afternoon until heavy rain began about 2pm.

As the creek water later become muddy and began rising fast, he alerted the tourists to get out of the creek and told them to start trekking back towards the exit 2.4 kilometres away.

During the return trek, they had to cross a section of creek and five tourists fell into torrential water. While four men were able to swim back to shore, the female tourist drowned.
