CHIANG MAI: -- Child protection agency officials and police arrested a 66 year old American yesterday on charges of having indecent images of children on a computer.

Officials from Thailand Internet Crimes Against Children (TICAC) led by Wachira Kanchanawiphada had a warrant to search the property of Douglas Wayne Canete at 918, Hillside Plaza and Condotel in Huay Kaew, Chang Pheuak, Muang district of Chiang Mai.

He denied everything but was taken away for questioning to Chang Pheuak police station.

Police found indecent images of children on an ASUS notebook. They also confiscated a host of other equipment they suspect may contain files of indecent images.

The American said that none of the computer equipment was his though he admitted that he lived at the address.

Through an English interpreter he was charged with the possession of indecent images of children and detained.

Manager reported that police suspect Canete of producing indecent images.

Nobody seems to be querying the obvious - and while I am in agreement with all of you about the treatment of paedophiles how did the Thai police find out about this unless they are snooping on people on their internet use?

I mean - how private are my emails to my bank or accountants, or children, or anyone? Are my internet movements tracked secretly?

Am I paranoiac?

Well, I use geo-location block and a VPN habitually as I value my privacy. Not that I do anything wrong but it's like the feeling of being violated when you come home after a burglary to find the thieves have gone through your underwear drawer and your wife's underwear.

Not defending this guy but how easy is it for someone to pop some files on your computer then try to extort money from you to make the charges go away? Maybe an angry girlfriend getting revenge? How do these officials know to go knock on this guys door in the first place?

More likely he has been visiting some of the sick sites overseas,

and Western Police operating sting operations have obtained his

IP address here in Thailand and advised the Thai Police to pay him

a visit.

Probably based upon a tip.  Possibly a cleaner was in the unit and saw something she was not meant to see.  Most pedophile/pervert types are caught through other than Cybercrime investigation methods.  It's mostly the old fashioned way:  Someone saw or heard something that was not meant to be seen or heard.

This concern seems valid. If the guy is guilty he needs to be brought to justice, I just shudder to think how easy extortion could be given a crooked cop and the right circumstances.

My guess is that this sickavile was sharing the images with other sickaviles, could have even been mates living abroad, one got caught and this guy`s details came up as a contact, Thai police get tipoff. Whatever, I`m happy he was rumbled.

Complaint by foreign police. IP address recorded. Contact ISP. Bingo.

Even Tor isn't bulletproof and this guy probably thought he was safe just being in Thailand.

Quite possible, a few have been taken down in Australia also in the last couple of days as part of an international operation.  They included a federal police officer and the husband of an M.P.  These people are generally connected in some way like sharing pics.

Very easy , if he transmitted a picture or downloaded one off the internet your taggeg . All files have a hash value . Its just like dna no two files are alike . The hash value of known child porn is then entered into a data base which monitors the internet world wide . When you dowload one or upload your got . I m all for it i chased these bastards for many years . You call it snooping i call it excellent police work . Fry his ass.

don't worry, anybody who is anybody can get to know anything they want from anybody else. Particularly with a warrant. . . You just have to know what you're doing. Forget about privacy on the net. Its possible up to a point. . . .
