'Active shooter' near Las Vegas casino

Somewhere out there in the US someone is already thinking how this worst shooting sofar can be topped and guess what; he will not have any problem in gathering guns and ammunition to make it happen. There are no lessons learned from whichever shooting that already has occurred. There are no excuses for making these things possible in whatever way you look at them. Making things easy for religious or other nutcases is criminal IMHO.

Putting a face to the name - Stephen Paddock

Pertinent extracts from latest BBC news:

Re Marilou Danley

Sheriff Lombardo said she had now been located outside the United States and was not thought to have played any role.

Re Islamic State

But the group provided no evidence ... and has made unsubstantiated claims in the past.

Re gun laws

Nevada has some of the least stringent gun laws in the United States.

People are allowed to carry weapons and do not have to register themselves as a gun-owner.

Background checks are done when people buy guns, but they are also allowed to sell them privately.

This Paddock bloke is English ancestry, there are many paddock's in my county- West Yorkshire; he is an EnglishMUN....fi fi fo fum!

I stayed at Mandalay casino back in 2012 , a nice area of the Strip.  But there is no strict security at the casinos in Vegas. Anyone can walk into the casino with guns , no security checks, at all,  only at the night clubs.

There are gun stores on every street corner , even me as a foreigner can walk in and buy a gun legally  so it's really crazy . I'm surprised there's been no big massacres until now.

What they need to do now is to install metal detectors in all casinos.  and no guns allowed unless you work there. The casinos must be just as safe as the airports or people will just stop coming to Vegas.

Perhaps you could enlighten us all as to what we should be defending?  You can't possibly be so apoplectic that you believe anyone here would defend the actions of this murderer?

Are you ok?

It also said that IS routinely claim responsibility for such acts , no evidence at all to support that proposition at this stage.

Not just an embarrassment, but a national disgrace.  And yet folks don't want to change anything.

Of course not!  I'm an American and I have my 2nd Amendment rights not just to "firearms" but also to high-capacity, semi-auto and fully auto rifles that I can use for my recreational hunting...like killing deer and goats and rabbits... and dozens of people at a country music concert.  :bah:

You must be kidding me. The Casinos have extensive monitoring of every person that walks in the door,. facial recognition databases to ferret out criminals and card counters. Cameras that can take a picture of the mole on your ear for Id purposes....

We have a Jihad problem as the rest of you in the world also have.  ISIS just took credit for this shooting, this massacre.  Now we are hearing from law enforcement that they were watching him because they knew about him.  We are now being told that he converted to Islam months ago.

But keep flapping your gobs when you have no information.  It's amazing to me how you all have the answer to a question that has not yet been asked.

Why did he do it?

Law enforcement in Vegas and the major news wires (i.e., legitimate news sources) are concluding that there were no international connections.  So you're one of those guys that read fake news?

I believe bear and wolf cubs are also fair game now, under the new administration.

That is not to deter from this tragedy though.  I just wish logic could take a hold.

Did you read my sentence?  I am talking about guns and metal detectors, not cameras!

Anyone can walk in with a gun in their pocket! That was my point !

I am no stranger to Vegas , been visiting 6 times .

Much easier to find scapegoats than to face up to the obvious problem.

Much easier to spread propaganda than bother to check sources that agree with your prejudices.

Actually I would predict that something will be done after this.

This is the damage that one person can do with (I would imagine) legally purchased weapons. If this does not preempt a change to current gun control then there is no hope. It should have all supporters of 'own what you like because it is our right' rethinking the logic of that view.

I have no objection to the right to bear arms, but this is something completely out there. My sincere condolences to the families of those who died and were injured and a speedy recovery to the wounded.

Change has to come from the top and with Trump and his pals in charge nothing will happen.  I agree with your sentiment completely but all that is likely to happen is for more people to go out and buy guns.  America has created a society where Americans feel they have to arm themselves against other Americans.

over 500 now known to be injured and 58 dead so far.

Could be 100 dead when they are finished counting.

There's no excuse for this, Vegas is just gun crazy and with millions of visitors they need to do something asap.so people will feel safe.

Was in MGM Grand Signature Suites and the Casino in Vegas just a few months ago. These properties are all connected by enclosed walkways and moving sidewalks. None of the entrances had any metal detectors or security check points.

This is nothing to do with gun laws. From the sound of video, that was clearly not any kind of weapon you can have legally if you are not law enforcement or military. So a gun that is already banned, in other words

It does have a lot to do with gun control. People who have their head in their sand just do not want to think so.

The more tightly controlled guns are, the harder it will be to get hold of the ones that affect multiple victims in short order.

Are you really suggesting that the process of lowering flags to half-mast is a sign of disrespect ?

That post was tongue-in-cheek. Lowering one's self is a sign of respect whether you're a flag or a person.

If America wants to get even, what civilian deaths in the US concerns, with what they have done/doing to other countries in name of defending their interests, not even security concerns, then their flag will hang half-masted for the rest of the millennium. Enjoy your split second experience of a Syrian life at the moment and keep on drowning in crocodile tears. NFL 'kneeling problem' is solved for a while ... *End of rant*

Striking that there seems to be no social media profile. Flying under the radar? A greyman? Sounds like the type of guy who might adopt that kind of persona.

I'm rather flabbergasted that isn't already standard in a high profile place like Las Vegas.

Believe it or not a very large percentage of 64 year olds do not use social media.

Speaking of social media; how is it that when automatic gunfire is raining down on you some people's first reaction is to jump on to Twitter to announce they are being shot at.

Random killing field. Too bad and this cannot be protected against such soft target.

Maybe if the USA had proper gun control then this and the almost daily similar attacks would not have happened?

Maybe...just MAYBE...because they (Muslim terrorists) are usually the culprits? Just taking a freakin wild guess here...

If this had happened in any first world country other than the USA, then you would be right. But in the USA, you are wrong.

Why the question mark???

It has been a long time since I have considered the USA being 1st world...
