The end of October will see the royal funeral and cremation of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who died last year.

The Royal funeral is scheduled from October 25-27, with the Royal cremation taking place on October 26.

October 25-27 is when there will be most disruption to events, public transportation, entertainment and other activities.

Some shops, cinemas and tourist attractions will also be closed on these dates.

While the authorities have asked for entertainment to be toned down as a mark of respect [no loud music and outdoor festivals], contrary to reports in international media, many tourist attractions, bars and restaurants will remain open for most of October.

For tourists and expats, disruption will remain minimal, apart from between October 25-27.

Alcohol ban

At the time of writing there’s been little information regarding a ban on alcohol sales, although you should perhaps expect alcohol to be banned on October 26, as this is an official holiday, and maybe even October 25 and 27.

October 13 marks the first anniversary of the death of HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej and is also an official holiday.

While officially there might not be an outright alcohol ban in place, many bars or entertainment venues may decide simply to not open. Thaivisa spoke to bar owners in Pattaya and Hua Hin who told us that while they had not received any official information they had decided to close Oct 25-27.

Bars and clubs in Soi Cowboy, for example, will be closed from October 25 to 27.

We’ll update this post with news of any alcohol bans and bar closures.

Immigration offices

Immigration and other government offices will be closed on October 23 due to it being Chulalongkorn Day, an annual national holiday which marks the anniversary of the death of King Chulalongkorn.

Immigration offices will also be closed on October 26.

Shopping malls, shops and other businesses

There has been no news to say otherwise so you can expect all major shopping malls to remain open as normal during the royal funeral.

You might find that individual shops decide to close, but the for the most part it will be business as usual at the likes of Central shopping mall, Robinson’s department stores and Villa Market. We’ll let you know if we hear of any change.

The only confirmed closures are at Tesco Lotus which announced that all stores nationwide will be closing at 2pm on October 26.

Major Cineplex will also close all theatres nationwide on October 26, as will all branches of B-Quick mechanics.

Banks are also likely to close on October 26, although perhaps check with your local branch for confirmation.

All of the above are due to reopen on October 27.

UPDATE

7-Eleven will close all branches nationwide from 2.30pm to midnight

Makro will close all stores from 3pm

True will close all branches from 3pm.

CP stores will also close at 3pm

Tourist attractions

In September it was announced the Grand Palace would be closed from Oct 1-29, reopening to the public on October 30.

Other popular tourist attractions that have announced they will close on October 26 include Tiffany’s Show in Pattaya, Dream World and Safari World in Bangkok and TK Park located in Central World.

For a comprehensive list of tourist attractions closed on October 26, take a look at Richard Barrow’s blog.

Transportation

A number roads in Bangkok will be closed from Oct 25-28 during the royal cremation.

These include: Charoen Krung, Chetupon, Kalayana Maitri, Lak Muang, Maha Rat, Na Phra Lan, Na Phra That, Phra Athit, Phra Chan, Phraya Petch, Phra Pipit, Rajini, Ratchadamnoen Avenue, Saranrom, Setthakan and Thaiwang.

All buses, trains and taxis will operate as normal. The BTS and MRT network will operate as normal and will be free for all passenger on October 26.

The Airport Rail Link and Purple Line will also be free from October 25-27.

We’ll continue to update this post when we hear of any additional closures.

If your business is planning to close between October 25-27 let us know via [email protected]

Central bank declares October 26 public holiday for financial institutions

By Chalarntorn Yothasmutra

Bank-holidays-10oct17.jpg

The Bank of Thailand has announced that October 26 is a special public holiday for financial institutions.

Mrs Viraekha Santapan, senior director overseeing financial institutions, said Tuesday that the central bank had been informed by all commercial banks that they would like their staff to join the Royal cremation of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej on October 26.

Hence, the central bank decided to declare October 26 a special public holiday for financial institutions.

All government offices and private companies are closed on the same day to allow their staff members to participate in the Royal cremation in their last show of respect for their beloved monarch.

This means all commercial banks and their branch offices, including those at shopping malls, will be closed on October 26.  But customers still perform financial transactions through internet banking.

Commercial banks will keep adequate cash reserves to ensure that customers can cash money via the ATMs without any disruption.

I am surprised that theaters are closing.  I would have thought that the ones outside bangkok and possibly a few in BK would have been open for people that wanted to watch the ceremony

There will be more than 900 places nationwide to attend local ceremonies.

Maybe they will also offer the chance to do "public viewing".

The cremation ceremony starts on Oct 26, 17:30h (5:30 PM), cremation as such at 22:00h (10 PM).

All TV channels under Thai administration will show the ceremonies from 25 to 27.

No regular programming.

Any news on Banks, what will they do over the period 25-27th?

Have you read the latest update three posts above yours?

On Oct 26 all major banks closed incl. the micro branches in shopping malls etc. No word about 25 and 27.

And as Tesco Lotus closes at 14:00h (2 PM) you would hardly have access to those bank branches in their malls.

Clearly the 26th all banks except those in shopping malls be likely be closed, I was told to come to my bank on the 27th, ut my guess is that they will be closed and make a long weekend of it although it has yet to announced and as for Tesco I am afraid I dont frequent their stores or areas of business.

So I was really asking a blanket question for anyone who might be thinking of coming from outside of town whether it would be worth making the journey.
