Commerce and Tourism have been the two successes of the junta. Getting rid of these two ministers while keeping several others (who just happen to be military) makes it look more like clearing out the civilians.

Perhaps the chairman of the board of investment should be axed. Oh, but wait, that's under the PMs office. He would have to seppuku

<snip>However, total FDI in 2016, in addition to the current two quarters of 2017, has dropped to levels last seen in the wake of the Asian financial crisis.Record high figures in 2013 of Bt513 billion ($15.1 billion) dropped to Bt374 billion ($112 billion) as of the second quarter of 2017, largely due to a pulling back of investment by Japan. From Bt310 billion ($9.1 billion) in 2013, Japanese investment in Thailand fell to Bt125 billion ($3.8 billion) in 2017.<snip>

Thank you for the link. Excellent article which explains a lot as to why the country is going down the economic gurgler under the control of the junta.

The problem here is that the "Boss" does not know what he wants.

Maybe she suggested the Government spent some money on road safety or building decent sewerage treatment plants on Phi Phi, Pattaya or Phuket ?

Sure way to get fired as the money is for the military, subs, & chuffa trains not to waste on infrastructure

It is a true wonder anyone comes here and in increasing numbers every year.

Strange, I came here in 2005 and the place was mobbed, you had to hunt for an empty deckchair on Jomtien beach.

Now we have 3 times the number and you could get 200 chairs each .......if it is not a Wednesday.

Is she the same tourism Minister that coined the phrase....... "No Sex Please...... WE are Thai" .............

and started the government crack down on massage shops, bars, and any others offering sexual services...............

BS....... Thais aren't like that,,,,,,,,, Thais like sex..... Just ask any Thai boy (and the baby he fathered).....LOL......

If SHE is the one who said..... "NO SEX Please........ WE  ARE THAI"........ Then.............. good riddance and bye bye............

Ah, a Harvard guy in there, now . . . one of the Three Degrees, I hear.

"Thailand . . . always amazes you!" He'll be glad of that slogan, that's for sure, when he's out on his ass at the Christmas reshuffle. "Wait a minute, Chan . . . I've got a degree in Finance, too . . . I could improve the Police corruption money streams . . . OK . . . is that a 'yes'?"

And to be fair it appears to be a proper education as opposed to one of the B list US universities. She went to Wellesley College whose alumni include Hillary Clinton and her mother, Thanpuying Niramol.

Mrs Popkarn is no big loss, but I doubt if somebody better is coming up??  Why? Because Thai tourism and the governement do not seem to see the whole picture?. There is that wonderful slogan "Amazing Thailand", but nobody seems to think about why is it so amazing? Amazing because every kind of tourist can see and find his own Amazingness and that can be anything and it is incluiding, to give you some examples: "the streetfood and colorfulness of unorganised markets, or the nightlife with its many facets, massage parlors and go go bars" are and have a right and must be part of the picture of "Amazing Thailand". Obviously Mrs Kobkarn never understood that truth.

Now some stupid activistics laws like no drinking and smoking on beaches just divert from the serious waste problems on many tourist islands and the waste problems in the sea. Things like that do not get better by denouncing and punishing...instead start a serouis education of Thais, who are the most waste producers....how many times have you seen Thais throwing cigarettes buts and waste everywhere where they go and drive? How many times did you see tourists doing it? Give it an honest thought!!!!

According to one report I read, she said that the increase was in "Quality Tourists" who only stay in 5* accommodation and consequently wouldn't mix with the riff raff on the beach! :cheesy:

1. Because the numbers claimed did not gel at all with what was seen on the ground.

2. Because the numbers claimed would require motre flights than could be accommodated at all the international airports of Thailand.

3. Because all passengers landing in transit to other places (usually other countries) were counted as Thailand tourists.

4. Because people leaving and then returning (eg foreigners travelling home then back) were counted as tourists.

Allegedly.

Probably lots more rorts as well, but chiefly, the tourists and revenues claimed were not reflected in actual revenue terms and the continual contradictory reports of tourist-based business in the major resort towns were not explained.

1.  What were the numbers seen "on the ground"?   Who collated your imaginary on-the-ground numbers?

2.  Says who?  What is the maximum number of arrivals that can be accommodated at every airport in Thailand by every incoming flight?  There are also more ways to enter Thailand than by air.

3.  Who said that they are counted as "tourists" as opposed to "arrivals" in the country?

4.  If someone enters the country after leaving are they not arrivals?  Why should they be excluded?  If you want to exclude those arrivals then you also have to exclude every other person who has left the country, for whatever reason, and then come back.  That would be every person who has visited Thailand more than once.

'...but chiefly, the tourists and revenues claimed were not reflected in actual revenue terms..."

Again, says who?  Hearsay doesn't count.

Good material for a caption-competition ?

"It's good to see, that preparations are well-advanced, for the upcoming Pattaya Olympics !"

"OK, own up, who just pulled the plug out, on the swimming-pool ?" :whistling:

"Well those koi, in the flooded basement of a half-built Bangkok-condo, made a popular tourist-attraction, so I just thought Why Not Pattaya Too ?"

"Today Pattaya, tomorrow Wimbledon !"
