The 38-year-old father, whose name was withheld, said he had to keep his nine-year-old son inside the cage at their house in Tambon Phru Din Na in Klong Thom district for the boy’s own safety. The father said he had to earn a living, while the boy liked to wander around and could endanger himself. The man said his wife had left him to take care of the children alone. The boy was injured in a road accident, after which he appeared to be mentally disabled, the father said. He said he had decided to build the wooden cage so that the boy would be safe when he left the house. Sir Dude Posted December 19, 2017 Share Posted December 19, 2017 Welfare and support for those Thais that really do need the help of the state is sadly lacking here in a lot of cases, patchy at best. A great way to judge a society/culture is to observe how it treats it's own people that really do need it's help, such as the disabled, frail elderly and mentally ill. There are now a few things like encouraging large companies to employ disabled people in return for tax breaks or for every 100 people you employ you need to employ 1 disabled person (can't remember the exact figures though) but it has a long way to go still. By Kritsada Mueanhawong A Krabi man, Chamnan Duangchan, the father 9 year old Poramet Duangchan, is crying out for help after his son was hit by a car and become so worried that he feels he has to keep his son in a cage while working away from home. The 9 year old Poramet was hit by a car 5 years ago while going to Pru Dinna School. He was injured in the crash and suffered head trauma as a result of his injuries. Following treatment and medication, he stopped talking and listening. The father has brought him to several hospitals in Phuket, Trang and Krabi but says his son has never recovered. At least get him a few more toys to play with. Hope he gets food and water while the father works. Wouldn't hurt to have someone check on him thru out the day. What do you think happens to impoverished children with mental illness in Thailand? Newsflash, the care of poor mentally disadvantaged kids often consists of over medicating, beatings, no human contact unless it is to sexually abuse and warehousing. Lack of proper nutrition and exposure to infectious disease doesn't help matters. By Kritsada Mueanhawong After the news regarding 9 year old Poramet Duangchan was reported yesterday (Poramet was hit by a car, suffered head trauma, and now has to live in a cage as his father, who works full-time, finds it difficult to control him and stop him from running away), Krabi Office of Social Development and Human Security, along with Krabi officials and the Krabi Red Cross are helping the boy. Donations have reached 400,000 baht. The Krabi official team visited the house yesterday (December 19) to check his condition and collect information about his medication and seek ways to further assist the family. The Red Cross and Social Development and Human Security gave an initial amount of 3,000 baht along with some rice and dried food. More support will follow from the department. Thai society should however be asking itself if they care for such issues of human conditions and if they are ready to sanction the budgets for adapted ressources? Yes, and add a serious head injury to that. My husband had his head stomped on. He was crazy. We had to tie his hands and legs to the bed at night or he would self injure. It broke my heart. but the other choice was have him locked in an institution. This man is doing the right thing to save his child. Walk a mile in another man's shoes.
