Well Reading this whole thread has been greatly entertaining.  A bunch of Foreigners calling for actions to turn Thailand into the Shitholes they came from.  Like yosib157 and so many other posters try to advise all they can come up with is:
1. Write tickets for speeding
2. Write more tickets for seat belts
3. Write more and more tickets for red lights.

And I wonder if they know anything about road safety at all.  They talk about Thai's being children but then scream on here all day long about how they need the Thai Police to act like their parents.

**********************************

Road Safety to improve in Thailand would not be hard to do.  And no, it won't be the Thai police force to improve it.  To actually improve the Road safety these foreigners should take a Drive from Bangkok to Khon Kaen during this time frame and actually see the problems to recognize them and fix it.

1.  Bangkok to Khon Kaen is only a 450km trip.  That means it should be about a 4-5 hour drive.  If you try it during new year its like 13 hours.  No wonder people are getting to tired.  They need highways where drivers can get on, get up to speed and roll on without cross traffic in front of them.  Simply upgrading the highway system to something more like the American interstate would save countless lives in Thailand.  From Fatigue issues, to T-Bone Collisions to a variety of other issues that simply come from this road system.

2.  Get rid of All road blocks during this period.  Part of the problem is it take so long to get there and then they actually put obstructions in the way to cause congestion and make it worse.

3.  U-Turns on Highways, <deleted>!

4.  A multitude of other road design and engineering problems that could be solve.  NONE which involve the police that these foreigner babies so desperately call for to come save them.

I reckon the Thai Police have designated readers of all the foreigners forums.

Don't they ever become even slightly embarrassed by sane peoples' comments?

Most foreigners could write a 30 point list how to stop a lot of accidents within Thailand.

If there are any Thai Police reading this forum, just start with 3 basics.

Become more pro-active out there on the highways. Make every policeman responsible for giving out tickets for basic traffic offences rather than these ridiculous and generally ineffective road-blocks.

Use those resources outside of supermarkets and stop every driver in and out and make them wear seat-belts.

Buriram is worse than anywhere I've seen in Thailand where going through red-lights seems to be expected and accepted. There are cameras on most junctions in all cities so use them and fines of 5,000 for jumping lights would cut most of this out.

In Summary.

Police wear seat-belts at all times and be more pro-active in accident prevention.

Enforce the wearing of seat belts laws.

Heavy fines for drivers going through red lights.

Having seen the amount of traffic today and the standard of driving, my car keys are hung up and will remain there for the next 5 days. Carnage is a much over used but accurate description.

At least a lot of the "shitholes they came from" are safer shitholes.

The only way to stop road carnage is to come down on traffic violations very hard. This shithole will never change unless they do follow methods used in those other shitholes where they have made progress on road safety. It was the wild-west in many of those other shitholes, just like it is here now. You'd be amazed at the traffic violations I used to get away with in Australia & NZ back in the 70's and 80's. Things have changed a lot now, for the better. Most drivers now seem like Sunday drivers by comparison. It works.

Road Design and Engineering are far far far more effective but the old goats don't get it.  They think poor design and planning with tons of cops around writing tickets is the solution.  Completely ignorant of the road design improvements of the last 40 years in those "safer shitholes" that they don't want to live in.
