Drugged up monks do Pattaya in a Golden Volvo!

Pattaya police looking for illegal activity at a checkpoint struck pay dirt yesterday when a golden Volvo came their way.

Inside were two very suspicious looking characters in saffron robes - the two monks refused to say what they were actually doing in Pattaya.

So police checked the histories of Phra Sonthaya, 54, and his holy honcho Phra Sombat, 70, and found some interesting previous offences.

One of the monks had been done for drugs and rape, Independent News network reported without specifying which one.

Neither had the requisite monks ID with them and they were very vague about where they entered holy orders though they said they had driven from Ang Thong in the Volvo.

They had some "business" in Pattaya that was also equally vague. Consequently they were both urine tested for drugs.

The orange gentlemen's yellow body fluid returned purple.

Both were detained as the Sangha Council were contacted and the urine samples were sent to Banglamung Hospital for further detailed analysis.

Here we go again, monks or so- called monks being naughty chappies again.

Getting boring reading almost daily reports of drunken/drugged up/ scamming monks.

Go to be a monk, live the high life, pissed/ drugged up all at other peoples expense.

This sort of goings on tends to tar all of them with the same brush. Very sad and another sign of the live and let live attitude here that in the end causes masses of problems. They really must tighten up on people going into the monkhood. Criminals are accepted. That just can't be right. Police checks should be carried out on individuals wishing to become a monk. Oh hang on, that will cause no end of problems to rataban individuals wishing to make amends ...

No.  Nothing will happen to them.  They will go about business as usual.

By now I think even Buddha would have lost his peaceful mindset and patience with these guys and burned the temples down.

Funny but not a good comment. Buddha would never lose it since he has attained "Nirvana"

Of course, in this case it remains uncertain if they were real monks or just dressed up as monks.

I assure you most monks don't live the high life, do drugs, drink alcohol and enjoy fleshly delights.

The fact on a regular basis pseudo or imitation monks are brought in the daylight might just mean the control is growing.

There are a lot of people getting peace of mind from religion, not your or my business to attack them.

You must be lucky to have met some good ones.

I speak from personal experience that there are many bad ones about.  Just once example from many.....next door to me the monk at the village temple regularly gets drunk and plays ear splitting old Thai pop songs about ladyboys over the temple speakers for hours on end.  He even drives about in the expensive new temple pick up in his robes, to buy stuff from the shops.  No one says anything.. no one will say or do anything.  And, he is the head monk.. abbot... and has been there for years.

There are a lot of people getting lied to, conned, sexually abused, given false hope, wasting their time and lives from religion, and when than happens I think it is our business to point out bad behaviour.

I don't understand the fact that if someone decide to become a monk and join a temple he automatically becomes a monk. It is just like if I join a Karate club and right away I became a black belt.

You can't be a monk just because you shave your head and wear a safran robe. There should be a lengthy period of learning before an authority recognise each individual as a monk.

Just like in karate.. Learn.. pass belts etc,  then you should be called a monk and therefore earn the respect for it.

Too often dudes commit a crime, go to a temple, shave their heads and magically are called monks.. No they are not...  they are just novice...

In my village the abbot died over a year ago, his body didn't decompose and he was kept in a glass coffin in a small house built for his remains in the Temple grounds. A few days ago he was cremated, a ceremony was held first with his coffin placed on an elaborate building/stage made of wood that took months to build. After a three hour ceremony it was torn down. He was highly revered and a lot of dignateries came to pay their last respects as did the entire village and indeed the surrounding villages. Here a few pics

I am at a loss to know what all this means. What is "had been done for drugs and rape"?

And where do monks (if they're really monks) get the alms to spend in Pattaya's fleshpots?
