I'd be happy to chip in some money to help my fellow countryman. If someone set up a (kosher) fund I'd put 1,000 baht in.

I had an old friend of 15 years who hanged himself in Khon Kaen some years ago, similar situation. Only thing being that my old friend had retired with plenty of money, but was subsequently bled- dry by his Thai family.

Kindly PM me too! I join in if anyone started this’s. Cheers

"He had to work on a construction site for 50 baht a day to try to get back to the UK, he claimed."

What formula would give the answer when exactly he would have enough money to do this?

A story similar to the sick buffalo series???

He could get a tourist visa , with a return ticket and show B20,000. There's more to this story than shown here.

Living in Lopburi he said that the woman had stolen his ATM and other documents.

His pension was 300 pounds a month but she took it all. He had to work on a construction site for 50 baht a day to try to get back to the UK, he claimed

There's a lot very wrong. Nothing in the post says that they're married and had an account together. How could the "lady" empty his account? Over the ATM? Wages for a day is between 200 and and 400 baht, depending on the project.

And even if they ripped him off, how could he save money to buy a ticket from 50 baht a day? He needs to eat as well, even a Mama per day and free water wouldn't make sense.

Wouldn't such a woman fear cops? Something smells fishy here.

Another pathetic ejit from the U.K.  Sorry, this Bozo gets no sympathy, he brought all of this on himself

You seem to be a nice guy....:shock1: If the woman took his pension away and other documents, how can that be his fault only?

Please elaborate.

a man would have to be very careful with his money if he has placed his hopes on returning to the UK on the savings he can acquire on a 50 baht a  day  job.

Bloody hell he gets less than the workers from Laos and Cambodia They get 200 baht per day Beside what work would he do on a construction site The washing up in the smoko room Sounds a bit suss to me

Is the retired postmans name Walter Mitty?

Such a BS story pension 300 a month? Bol++ks, in the photo he looks about retirement age.

So his pension is only 75 pounds a month,i do not get the full pension, but still get more than 40 pounds a week more than that, iffy very iffy.

Did you make a mistake there and mean 75 pounds a week? I took early retirement so I didn't qualify for the full 100% state pension and is not much more than that stated in the OP. However, if he had no savings how did he meet requirements to stay? As you say, 'iffy'.

What a fine gentleman you are! It's impossible that the guy was working for 50 baht a day, perhaps 50 baht an hour. Even in the poorest areas like Sisaket, people make around 200- 300 baht per day in construction.

You, on the other hand are so kind that you'd let him work for 150 baht a day. Would you have mentioned anything more than 500 baht, my post wouldn't be written.

You're certainly not somebody others wanna call friend.

Maybe the 3 times rate was just a figure off the top of his head.

I suspect his intentions are on the noble side and he'd do the lad well.

I only hope you get the thrust of my post.    So much is understated or incorrectly stated that we all need to take pause from time to time..

I think the postman will continue to deliver your mail..        That deserves a double as in my cocktails.

Good luck

He could have had his ATM card cancelled within minutes of noticing it was gone, even if it was from a bank "back home". One phone call is all it takes.

I've called my bank (back home) and credit card company (a few times) over the past 20+ years and that's all it took to get the situation resolved. One call.

The article doesn't say when the card was "stolen" (or how she knew the PIN, or why he couldn't make that one phone call). Surely he wasn't one of those trying to get by on just 300 GBP (about 13,000 baht) per month with no other savings ? Not to mention the whole "visa/extension of stay" issue.

Just recently  (6 weeks ago) I left my ATM card in a machine by accident. I was in a hurry and using a machine from a different bank and somehow forget to remove the card. Discovered my error the next day when I was 3 provinces away. Called a buddy who went to the machine and, naturally, the card was gone.

Made one phone call to the bank. The lady I spoke to asked my details (name, birthday, passport #) and then cancelled the card. She gave me the account balance as well and it sounded like the right amount. When I got home I went to the bank and was issued a new card (and set a new PIN) and was done in 5 minutes. No problems at all.

Working at a construction site for 50 baht a day ? That sounds pretty hokey as well. I'd be questioning the "boss" of that crew as to why he was hiring foreigners to work in Thai-specific jobs (like masonry, carpentry, etc) and paying well below the minimum daily wage at that ! (From the Ministry of Labour website:)
"

OCCUPATIONS AND PROFESSIONS PROHIBITED FOR FOREIGN WORKERS

THE LIST APPENDED TO THE ROYAL DECREE IN B.E.2522

PRESCRIBING OCCUPATIONS AND PROFESSIONS PROHIBITED FOR FOREIGN WORKERS
1.  Labour work;
2.
3. Bricklaying, carpentry or other construction work;"

Frak - how many decades would you have to work at 50 baht/day in order to (survive to begin with) and save up enough for a plane ticket ? Even if he was sharing meals (eating for free) and sharing accommodations (living for free), it would still take a full year (365 days straight) to earn the equivalent of about 420 GBPs.
Of course then there'd still be the whole "overstay" issue (at 500 baht a day).

Not to mention that he could simply go to the Embassy for help as well, even if it was just to contact family/friends or some charity organization maybe.

some people are full of BS he should write fairytales

Absolutely!

Always think on the positive side!

If the majority does this, the sick buffaloes would have been cured long time ago...

(Well... human minds are biased by default)

He told police that he found a Thai girlfriend and moved in to her home.

Eh?  If he moved into her home, why hasn't he been able to recuperate his funds, documents, and ATM card?  Foreigners just don't move into a Thai person's home.  There's usually some kind of ceremony welcoming the person to the village. There is a lot more to this loser's story than what is in print.  And why are the three veiled women in the police office?  What was their crime?  Story is pretty lousy,  Nation/Thai Visa.  Get some decent writers.
