About 100 people carried the body of a man who was killed at a checkpoint to the Mae Suay District Office in Chiang Rai province on Monday to demand justice.

The victim, 35-year-old Sornchai Sathitrakdamrong, was shot while driving past a checkpoint on January 2. He was on a New Year trip to visit his family in the northernmost province.

His mother Nasor Jayor, 79, wept throughout the occasion.

“Which gun claimed Sornchai’s life?” and “Why did a good man have to die?” were among banners displayed at the rally.

Last Friday, police arrested assistant village head Wutthichai Injai as the suspected shooter.

Sornchai’s relatives and locals, however, believe several more figures should also have been held responsible for his death.

“At the checkpoint that day were not just the assistant village head but also the village head, volunteers, police and soldiers. Several persons there were armed and used their guns in public places,” the family’s lawyer, Jeerasak Damrongchokchaikul, said.

Sornchai and his girlfriend reportedly drove past the checkpoint at about 8pm last Tuesday without stopping. Someone opened fire and one bullet killed Sornchai.

“Following the shooting, the checkpoint was removed. No one stayed at the scene for police to arrive,” Jeerasak said.

The family said they hoped police would nail down all culprits.

Jeerasak said his team was now in contact with a few more witnesses and their information could be useful to the investigation.

The family has vowed to neither bury nor cremate Sornchai’s body until justice is done.

Authorities are assuring the family that justice will be delivered.

Well...

But it also says "no one stayed at the scene for the police to arrive".

Hmm ... earlier, the story says the checkpoint had .....volunteers, police and soldiers ....  So why wait for police to arrive? They were already there!
