E-cigarettes - Thailand ban is "appropriate" says leading doctor

A leading Thai doctor has said that the government's ban on the import and usage of e-cigarettes is appropriate.

While another has rejected claims from users and the e-cigarette industry that vaping is safe and doesn't lead to addiction.

Thailand has some of the strictest penalties against e-cigarettes in the world. While many countries have vaping shops on street corners in Thailand importers face jail and even users could wind up in serious trouble.

Dr Wanchai Suphajaturat, a member of an anti-smoking panel, told Thai Rath in a feature about e-cigarettes that in his opinion the Thai government's measures were appropriate.

People should not be encouraged to take up e-cigarettes as a means of quitting regular smoking. It was not proven that they were safe at all and more research needed to be done.

People who want to quit should get help such as phoning the 1600 helpline.

He said that smoking was draining the national coffers as 50,000 people die annually. E-cigarettes were not the answer.

Dr Prakit Watheesathakakit, the secretary of an anti-smoking society concurred saying that claims that vaping was 95% safe were nonsense.

He cited cancer and heart disease as a problem and said that nicotine levels were much higher for vapers and this was the addictive substance that had smokers coming back for more.

He dismissed claims from a 12 man pressure group that the law should be changed. he said that six of those people had no experience to bring to the table and two of them had a vested interest in the e-cigarette business.

Dr Prakit was pictured with a sign in Thai that suggested: "Cigarettes= addictive drugs"

But smoking swells the national (Government) coffers, (as well as that of the Thailand Tobacco Company), with high taxes.

The problem with thai society is that when a so called educated idiot speaks, other fools are not expected or allowed to question their knowledge. The burning question is simple, if e cigarettes are dangerous and deserved to be banned for the health of the people then why do they sanction the sale of cigarettes and other more dangerous pollutants and toxic substances. The answer of course is hypocrisy and tax.

Both my best mate and my son have used e-cigerettes to quit the ciggies and BOTH said they couldn't do it without them. Dr Prakit is smoking crack or in cahoots with Thai Tobacco - probably both.

Nicotine is not a dangerous drug, he is talking complete rubbish.

It is addicting, but so is caffeine, and it is a problem when found in cigarettes, as they contain all the nasty stuff that does give you cancer etc.

For a doctor he has a poor grasp of the subject.

This Doctor (?) has not done any research on the matter and "in his opinion" vaping should be banned.  Clearly he has an alternatived agenda!  Do these people not realise that the majority of people can see right through them and how rediculous they are portraying themselves?

I gave up a 30 year smoking habit after 18 months e-cig use.

This quack along with numerous other "experts" around the world restricting vaping have agendas that probably involve $$$$$$.

It is not safe, but definitely safer than cigarettes. FACT!

Absolutely.
E-cigarettes are not good for you,
but a hell of a lot better than cigarettes with tar content and other undesirable chemicals that are released, and thus inhaled, due to the high burning temperature..

I can imagine how that'll fare...

(Desperate smoker): "Is that the helpline? I wanna stop smoking!"

(#1600 responder): "Try an e-cig!"

Yer couldn't make it up

I think you'll find nicotine is poisonous and can kill in fairly small doses if ingested. So, it is dangerous in certain forms.
