Four female and three male students fainted on their way to school in Ayutthaya on Wednesday morning after their van’s air conditioner malfunctioned, police said.

The students were found unconscious in the van driven by Wanaree Jindarat, 52, when it reached the Pracha Sueksa School in Tambon Huaror of Ayutthaya’s Muang district.

The students were rushed to Ayutthaya Hospital and allowed to go home after they recovered.

One student’s parent, Yospong Khorporn, 36, said the van had been hired by parents to transport students to several schools and it had been crowded, leading to an inadequate air supply. Yospong added that the driver rarely turned on the air conditioner because the van was old.

Pol Colonel Surapong Thampithak, commander of the Muang district police station, concurred that the driver rarely turned on the air conditioner because the engine has antiquated and the air conditioner overloaded the electrical system.

Surapong said Wanaree normally opened the windows but morning rains had prompted her to close them, resulting in a stifling environment inside the van.

Atchara Kesaniyabutr, director of the Ayutthaya Land Transport Office, said the van’s owner had been fined Bt2,000 for failing to receive permission to operate the van as a school vehicle.

Death trap with no permission to carry kids to school fined 2000 baht. Find it hard to believe that the parents hired it without a commission from someone in authority at the school. Hope they checked the exhaust for CO leaking into the passenger compartment?

The root cause for all this shit including people crammed into pick-ups and kids on motorbikes is a complete lack of usable transport infrastructure a 3rd world transport system. Don't get me started on the police issues. Unfixable unfortunately

Go on Dave, get started, as in common with many other retired ex-pats, I've got nothing to do all day and I enjoy a good rant.    Try and keep it down to a couple of pages though, as I am a slow reader and I like to be in bed by 9 o'clock and my better three quarters does not like me reading in bed, particularly while otherwise engaged.

What it does not say is exactly how many poor kids were in the van to cause 7 of them to pass out;  if the weren't jammed in like sardines none would.  'Crowded' in Thailand probably equates to 50 kids in 12-seater.

what usable transport infrastructure would a child going to school use, maybe as many other countries do a bus, this is down to poor maintenance and unfit for purpose vehicles carrying fare paying passengers  and the lack of government/police rules and enforcement.

Hence the word USABLE  ie Maintained and fit for purpose

This story could have ended a lot worse if the students who fainted hadn't been found until much later.

Some of (a lot of???) these private bus operators are unfit to operate a bus "service".
