"It takes a second to say goodbye
Say goodbye, oh, oh, oh
Push the button and pull the plug
Say goodbye, oh, oh, oh"

a verse from what imo is a great U2 song "Seconds" about nuclear weapons, a bomb, from the album "war", seems like yesterday. the song is very relevant today still

You have to give some credit to US Armed Forces command.  They can't possibly be unaware that "the guy with the button his desk" has a problem between the ears and will not follow his orders to do something drastic if they see it as irrational.  If there ever would be a military coup (on any level) in the US it would happen at such a moment.

Hey, he wants parades with tanks, missiles, troops marching in formation etc and they won't grant him that!

HI is run by the democrats who have just shown they can't even create a plan to push a button. I mean really, hide in a building and keep 2 weeks worth of food and water handy. :whistling: Aside from that, there is NO safe place to hide on a small string of island outcropping formed by volcanic magma flows that are still quite active. If the immediate impact blast and thermal radioactive cloud didn't kill them, the ensuing, multiple volcanic eruptions would. Those that survived would be burned toast in a few days from the fallout.

Why bother ruining their last 10 minutes of life?

In case of nuclear attack, there is going to be mass casualties, no matter what. Few thousand perished tourists doesn't matter too much in that scenario..

Some actual shelters might help, though.

One reason for building an underground railway is that they provide shelter in the event of enemy attack and allow movement underground.

Of course given that the government in Hawaii seems to have done sod all in the protection department, the best people will be able to do in the event of an actual nuclear attack is to hide in a bathtub.

On the possitive side, the signal did go out and people received it, that is good to see that

the system actually works. Try think positive and be happy that a missle did not appear.

Geezer

Given that there was nothing they could have done anyway, even if it were a real missile, why bother making them panic for the last few minutes of life?

I wonder what the Hawaii politicians were doing during that half hour. Is there a shelter for them?

Shelter for politicians? Nah, let them be the shelter for others.

Trump was wrapping up a round of golf at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida when the incident was unfolding. White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said Trump was briefed and that it "was purely a state exercise."

How high is his handycap? Does anybody know?

No, no …..not for his golf playing .........., but for the working time of his responsible job as POTUS?

Seems hard to believe one rogue person could go though multiple authorizations and checks to set it off. May not have been an accident and actually been a real test of the missile warning system due to Hawaii's proximity to North Korea. They may have wanted to see it worked and there was no mass panic etc.

Not really that hard to believe given the people who created it have absolutely no idea what they are doing beyond making sure it's in the hands of an expendable flunky while they run and hide. While it may be true that 3 feet of solid concrete may deflect some of the initial blast, the 1/4" thick (or less) glass of hundreds of windows in those buildings would not. Hiding in a basement didn't bode well for NYC during 9/11 and there was no nuclear fallout nor volcanoes, nor earthquakes from the eruptions not to mention the EMP that would immediately knock out all communications.

Are you claiming that an nuclear bomb would set off volcanic eruptions? Sounds like something you learned from a 50's science fiction film. It looks like even underground nuclear explosions have no influence on volcanic activity.
