Bank may compensate ID card fraud victim

By The Nation

The Government Savings Bank says it is willing to compensate the victim of a scam in which bank accounts were illegally opened using the another person’s ID card.

The bank was responding to a recent case where a victim’s lost ID card was used to open savings accounts that were then used in a financial scam, leading to the card’s owner being wrongly detained by police.

Chartchai Payuhanawichai, president of the GSB, said the bank was ready to cooperate with authorities to prevent such an incident happening again in the future and would consider compensating the owner of the ID card.

The GSB is one of several banks that opened accounts for a criminal gang who illegally used other people’s ID cards.

In a statement released on Saturday, Chartchai said bank staff had followed standard procedures, but the smart card reader used in banks could only access limited information on the ID card.

The machine cannot access real-time information such as the owner ordering that the card be suspended after it was lost or stolen.

The bank will cooperate with Interior Ministry in this regard and compensate the victim, he said.

And so it should. Letting people use ID cards to open a bank while hiding their face is textbook negligence.

Tell them to remove the mask only for a few seconds to check.

And i read in another thread the cops are only letting her off if she passes a lie detector test. Farcical ?

Anything to save face. Who cares if innocent or guilty. The police here are a mafia and only react when people expose their sheer incompetence.

Yes but it has something to do with the fact that she lost her ID card 3 times in 1 year. Its true letting people open an account with a mask is crazy (and banks should be punished for it). However losing your ID card 3 times in a year is also a bit suspicious. (does not excuse the bank from its obligations)

Just a hint for foreigners living or visiting:

Get a WALLET size color copy of the photo page of your PP, and carry it with you, NOT your PP.  SECURE your PP someplace safe.  ANY Kodac store, most photography stores can do, and laminate, for under 100THB

The upside of this is if you are going around, shopping, normal sight seeing and etc, you will not loose your ID docs, and you are usually fine with the copy. I used my copy at the viewing of HRM Rama IX.

The downside of this is if you are found ""someplace"" that you should NOT be, the authority checking your ID will usually give you 4 to 6 hours ( unless you are the object of an investigation ) to present yourself to the authorities office with your PP.  Do not be foolish and try to leave Thailand.

Additionally long termers, you might get the wife / GF's copied and sealed on the same wallet card opposite side.  A good way for her to be contacted in a emergency, or if you have to take her to a hospital an she doesn't have her ID with her - happened to my lady, although I had to bring the original ID at bill payment.
