Picture: Daily News A group of Thais who believed they were going abroad to work as chefs ended up being forced into a call center scam, one of Thailand's top crime busters said yesterday. "Big Joke" Surachet Hakpal announced the arrest of three Taiwanese and Two Malaysians in Malaysia. The gang had recruited five chefs in Phayao telling them they would have jobs in Malaysia. Instead they were taken to Cambodia where they were told initially they were to be trained as receptionists. This soon turned into illegal call center work after threats and physical intimidation. The Thais ended up in Malaysia in a call center. The gang were running extortion scams based around making people believe that illegal packages had been found and arrest warrants had been issued. Thais were among the victims, reported Daily News. Surachet said that the case will be dealt with in Malaysia first before it is prosecuted in Thailand later. They would help the Thais involved in the case get back to Thailand in a few weeks after they have assisted the Malaysian authorities.
