My Android lost all it's contacts.

So yesterday morning everything as normal.

Yesterday evening I go to my list of calls made and received and see no names, only telephone numbers.

(In fact.....and this may be a useful clue.....on winding through these calls I'm sure i could see names appearing as I scrolled, but immediately changing to just a number as it came into proper view.)

I then try to type a contact into the search box to get a contact to call them.......it types but no number appears.

There are apparently no contacts listed.

OK progress:

I just went to settings>backup and reset and though I didn't realise I have this turned on and have a special gmail address which I vaguely remember....not my usual one for mail.

On clicking backup my data I get this info:

Can anyone suggest the best thing to do next?

Thanks!

It was a wonderful thing that backup was up and running.....I certainly can't remember doing it though I do remember seeing the special gmail address which seems to be related.

It enabled phone-stupid me to follow some instructions.

Voila! names are back. Satisfaction.....

Restore contacts from backups
  1. Open your device's Settings app .
  2. Tap Google.
  3. Under "Services," tap Restore contacts.
  4. If you have multiple Google Accounts, to choose which account's contacts to restore, tap From account.
  5. Tap the device with the contacts to copy.
