Competent vet in CM?

A male cat belonging to my extended family has been treated for urinary blockage.  The initial vet insisted that he had kidney stones obstructing the cat's ureters and recommended an operation.  After cutting open the cat, the vet found no stones or other foreign bodies blocking the urinary passages.  Then the cat spent close to two weeks recovering from the operation.  The vet (money money money).  
The cat is back home, but still has urinary problems, so for all the money tossed at trying to remedy the problem, the problems is still there.
I have my own story with vets in CM.  As far as I'm concerned the vet that I had spay my cat 1 year old cat who was in excellent health, killed it.  The vet (money money money).

So, are there any competent vets in CM who's main goal isn't personal wealth, but actually the care of pets.  And one who will accept the responsibility of a misdiagnoses and eat the cost if they either completely misdiagnose the problem, or kill the pet in the process of attempting to fix the problem.  Unreasonable?  I don't think so.  Professionals need to be held accountable.

So, any recommendations for competent, qualified vets who can handle a male cat's urinary issues?

We've used Ban Mha Ka Maew Animal Hospital  on Mahidol Road for the past 14 years. General medicine, minor surgery, etc. for our cat.  Always been happy with their care.

We also used Ban Mha Ka Maew Animal Hospital Hospital and they do a good job.

Call ahead that you get the more experienced doctors, Dr. Chakkrit or Dr. Orn-Usa. They don't work all day long.

The clinic is open 23 hours.

What about the CMU small animal hospital?  They have professors that also see patients (animals).  How could there not be competent vets on the staff?

Many people like Dr. Nook Animal Hospital, just off Chang Klan Rd. near the Shangri La hotel.  Dr. Nook recently performed surgery on Mr. Bitey, removing an amazingly-fast growing lump from his back that turned out to be cancer.  Mr. Bitey's liver function was compromised by the cancer, but has improved now thanks to meds and a special diet.  He has to return monthly for blood tests and adjustment of the meds and seems to like Dr. Nook, but not the ride over and even back home.  Complains the entire time.

CMU Small Animal Hospital is the best IMO. Lots of specialists available. Very difficult to see a Professor with the exception of the bone surgeon. They will consult if necessary. Almost all the good vets there have private clinics too. They are very experienced there and handle many difficult cases each day. Highly recommended.

 

The wife took all our pets to Ban Mha ka Maew for 15 years or so but after the most popular Mohr Aaa left about two years ago, we never returned.

I moved my cats to Thong Lor Animal Hospital on the middle ring road east of Ruam Choke a few years ago and have feel I have gotten superb care for both of them.

Yes, I have witnessed Dr. Nook coo-ing over cats in at least three languages.

Always use Dr Nook now, after a total mishap at Ban Mha Ka Maew a few years ago.

They're good, but expensive. The bill there is always double what I'm expecting. At CMU Small Animal Hospital it's always half what I'm expecting. Less waiting around at Thonglor though.

I am a regular customer at Thonglor thanks to having a cat that is a fighter, usually late at night when my usual vet in Meechok Plaza is closed. I have no complaints about any of the visits and treatment that the various doctors have given. They are careful, well trained and know their subjects, & have good equipment in a custom built facility. Yes they are more expensive but they are open 24/7 and can provide comprehensive care at any hour. And the senior staff have all been good with speaking English.

 

No doubt there will be the usual members who are critical on the basis of cost but as with my own health I believe in doing the best that you can afford. And I do not begrudge paying for good treatment.

I consider my pets a part of the family and whatever the expense I don`t begrudge it.

 

My dogs hate vets and when I inquired at the CMU Small Animal Hospital explaining that my dogs can be difficult to restrain and handle they told me that`s it`s the responsibility of each owner to keep their dogs under restraint. At the Ban Mha Ka Maew Animal Hospital they have expert staff and dog handlers. No problems, they know exactly how to keep my dogs under control while treated. The care and medical my dogs receive there I can only describe as absolutely first rate.

We got a misdiagnosis at  Ban Mha Ka Maew Animal Hospital but it was an emergency night visit so only a young and inexperienced vet was there.

Yes, one of the things I like about Dr. Nook's Animal Hospital is that she has several young male animal handlers who rush out to the Uber to escort Mr. Bitey into the clinic as soon as I arrive.  He always shuts up as soon as they show up.  They get him out on of the plastic basket and onto the examining table, where they do the initial prep work of weighing, temp, keeping him calm until the doc arrives, etc and, again, not a peep out of an animal who had been treating the Uber driver and me to a constant stream of kitty abuse the entire ride to the clinic. 

 

I expect that going to the CMU small animal clinic is kind of like going to Suan Dok hospital vs. Bangkok Hospital.  Good, inexpensive medical care but long waits and no frills like the vet clinic version of cute nurses to take your blood pressure and hold your hand.

No, not at all. First of all the price is not that different from some of the private clinics. I've never had to wait too long, but we always call in advance and make an appointment with our favorite vet there. Usually if the appointment is at say 10:30, then they usually call the queue by about 11:00. Or, I send a LINE message to the vet and tell him what time we made the appointment for. He usually responds by saying he will be ready to see us close to that time and comes out to get us. The long wait is from what I have observed, with the oncology specialists. Often there are many people with extremely sick animals waiting for long periods of time to see the cancer doctors who come on certain days and spend a lot of time with each animal. Then, the wait could be hours.

 

I feel that Small Animal Hospital is the best. They have everything there. You get all the diagnostics done once the vet starts your case. The bone surgeon is the only one in C.M. and although he has a private clinic in Chiang Mai Land, he only does surgery at the hospital. It's a very professional operation.

Yes, but the previous poster had said he was told by CMU Animal Clinic that it's the responsibility of each owner to keep their dogs under control and at least one of the private clinics have excellent animal handlers, so the owners don't have to do this.  In my post I pointed out that Dr. Nook's clinic also has excellent animal handlers and, in fact, would rather the owners not try to handle the animals during the exams and procedures.  We can watch, but many owners really don't know how to handle their animals properly and don't understand what the vet is going to do, while the staff at the clinic certainly knows how to assist the vet.  It's unfortunate that the CMU Animal Clinic doesn't have animal handlers to assist because many animals can become a handful for their owners to handle when they're stressed.

If really needed CMU has assistants to help you.  It's just that they are not waiting at the front door expecting every customer to need such assistance.  There may be various reasons for choosing your selected vet, but in my opinion you should not be put off of CMU because you are afraid there are no assistants available to help should you really need it.

Dr Bell Next to Betagro outlet on San Kampheng road before the new Samsen Villa. for non complicated cases. small clinic but she is quite a competent person and doesn't charge a bomb.

This is good to know.  Of course, I don't need assistants to keep Mr. Bitey under control.  Well, actually I do in some situations, there is a reason Mr. Bitey is his ThaiVisa (not his real) name.  But I can get his basket out of the Uber and sit with him in a waiting room just fine, provided everyone is OK with a squalling cat throwing himself against the basket.  But, Dr. Nook's assistants do a great job of calming him down prior to Dr. Nook entering the room and I fear he'd be a real handful without them.

 

But, if he had a problem that Dr. Nook couldn't handle, I'd have no qualms about taking him to the CMU clinic.

 

It helps that both our cats have been neutered and spend all their life inside.  Little-to-no chance of the traumatic injuries likely to afflict outdoor cats.  Still can happen.  We had one cat in the U.S. who chewed on an electrical wire and in reacting to the shock managed to tip a bookcase over on himself.  Plus make a big mess when he emptied his bowels on the carpet.

Dr. Nook is great and fits the description of a "vet who cares" perfectly.

Our dog is very easy going anyway but she loves the animal handlers at Dr Nooks. First dog that I've ever had who is happy to go to the vet.
