webfact
Thick smoke visible for kilometres as massive factory burns By Khanitta Sitong The Nation A major fire was still burning on Sunday afternoon at a factory that manufactures disposable gloves used for medical examinations and procedures, in Trang’s Kantang district. KhaniThe blaze began at 5am at the country’s largest rubber glove-manufacturing factory by Thai Kong Company as hundreds of shift workers fled the scene in panic. The factory storage of highly flammable materials was on fire, while there was insufficient water at the scene, forcing firefighters to travel a distance to refill their fire engines. That slowed down efforts to extinguish the flames. Thick black smoke was visible for miles around as it bellowed hundreds of metres into the air. As of press time, the fire was not yet extinguished, while gusty winds added to the difficulty facing firefighters. The factory had reported investment capital of Bt2 billion and employed nearly 2,000 workers. d2b2
Incidents, such as these, demonstrate the importance of zoning laws and building codes and inspection. There is no excuse for heavy industry to be located where there are insufficient fire controls.
