Washington is Trump's preferred parade route, options open - Mattis

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Thursday he believed President Donald Trump wants Washington, D.C., to be the setting for a parade to honour the U.S. military but left open the possibility that it could be staged elsewhere.

Trump has asked the Pentagon to explore a parade in celebration of American troops, after the Republican president marvelled at the Bastille Day military parade he attended in Paris last year.

But critics have lampooned the proposal. They argue that a parade could cost millions of dollars and disrupt city streets and question why a show of military might is needed now.

Mattis, speaking to reporters, explained that he would give Trump options on the parade.

"We'll work out everything from size, to participation to costs. And when I get clear options, we will send those over to the White House and I'll go over and talk to them," Mattis said.

When asked whether location was also a variable, Mattis suggested he had not yet considered alternatives to Washington but did not rule out other options, either.

"As I understand it, he wants the parade in Washington, D.C., but that's a good question. I'll see what we put together for options," Mattis said.

At least two congressional Democrats said they would introduce bills to block federal funding from being used for a military parade.

"First and foremost, diverting millions of dollars away from training our troops and supporting our military, especially at a time when Congress is struggling to pass annual appropriations, should be enough to kill this idea," said Senator Ben Cardin, the top Democrat on the foreign relations panel.

On Wednesday, the Council of the District of Columbia ridiculed the idea of a parade on Pennsylvania Avenue, the 1.2-mile (1.9-km) stretch between the Capitol and the White House that is also the site of the Trump International Hotel.

“Tanks but no tanks!” it tweeted.

The Pentagon earlier on Thursday said it was not certain that the Washington area would host the parade.

"We don't know that. There are options and we will explore those and the president will ultimately decide," said Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White, adding that the U.S. Army was taking the lead in creating options for the event.

One possibility is for a parade on Nov. 11, the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One.

Stupid idea. More than enough recognition of military between special holidays and how militarism has permeated everyday life in America now since 9/11. Everyone's a hero, don't you know. Can't watch a football game without it's intrusion.  All that said, my question would be, what is this stupid idea meant to distract people from?

Don't show up for the parade, or speak out against it and Trump with paint you as anti-Military. Let me say that again. Trump will paint you as anti-Military. And then he'll kick you where your bone spurs hurt the most.

Go Navy!

Yea, right!  Nothing to do with honoring our great American troops.

Instead,  Cadet Bone Spurs, as in Donald Trump who got 5 draft deferments during the Vietnam War era,  just wants to honor himself...receive salutes as the troops march by him.    Wonder if he'll march in parade?   Whoops, forgot...he can't as he supposedly has feet bone spurs--yea, right.

I believe that 45 DID have bone spurs back in the day... unfortunately they immigrated to his brain in the intervening years... #brainspurs

It seems most people, including the military, aren't in agreement on the Parade:

Poll finds almost no one thinks Trump's military parade is a good idea

President Donald Trump made waves this week as reports emerged that he had asked the Pentagon to work up plans for a massive military parade akin to the type normally seen in countries like Russia and North Korea.

But according to an informal poll conducted by the Army Times, most people don’t support it.

Nearly 9 in 10, or specifically 89 percent, of the publication readers who responded said the parade is "a waste of money and troops are too busy."

I think that the title of "Grand Poobah" would be more appropriate.

Grand Poo Bah

A Grand Poo Bah is any overbearing and pompous authority, often claiming numerous titles, roles or distinctions and frequently overplaying their hand. An overstuffed shirt. Someone who expects others to lick up to them for nothing. From a character in the 1885 Gilbert and Sullivan operetta The Mikado.

It's basically a troll move from the troll president. Most of what he does is trolling. If you're against it, you're a traitor. His base will eat that up.

Trump's ideas all follow a similar pattern

1. They are simple. Usually boiled down to one sentence. "Repeal and replace." "Build a wall." "Lock her up."

2. Trump is not concerned with the detail.

3. Trump is not interested in doing the hard work or negotiating to make the idea reality.

4. They are not thought through.

5. When they fail because of reasons 2 - 4, it is somebody else's fault. Tweets of hate follow.

6. A driver for his limited number of ideas is competition with other leaders or previous presidents.

7. They are not beneficial for the nation or society nor philanthropic.

China continues to turn the South China Sea into its militarized lake.  The Taliban has solidified its hold on much of the countryside in Afghanistan and is now staging bloody attacks in the Kabul, in spite of Trump's troop surge.  Turkey has attacked our Kurdish allies in Syria, which may lead to a military confrontation between a key NATO ally and the US.

Trump has diverted attention from these and other military issues by talk of a parade.  I still think he is an idiot, but he is a master of diversion.

Interesting prediction on what the date will be for trump's proposed fascist dictator parade. His birthday! :shock1:

This, and not the Bastille Day parade Trump witnessed in Paris last July 14, is likely the true inspiration for Trump’s parade idea. He does not so much envision an army at quick step but himself reviewing it. It is this that so offends — the American military as a Trump prop, its heroes, its wounded and its dead drafted to serve the needs of a squalid ego, and its somber tradition of martial modesty turned to bling by the vainglorious president. The appropriate date for such garishness is Trump’s own birthday — the former Flag Day, the future Trump Day, and, to some of us, the new Halloween.

Even the Trump supporters have gone quiet on this.  Doesn't anyone want to try and explain why this BS parade is a good idea?

Yeah, but if this goes forward the "trump supporters" will be calling anyone that thinks it's an awful and dangerous idea un-American treasonous traitors. Bank on it.
