Police chief put on inactive duty in fallout from "obscene" tattoo contest in Rayong mall

The chief of police in Rayong has been ordered transferred to clerical duties for 30 days pending an investigation into how a tattoo contest was allowed at a downtown shopping center.

 

The contest featured many young men and women baring all but their essentials to show off their tattoos as children and young shoppers mingled in the crowd.

 

Now a couple of "magical trees" outside the police station are thought to have brought trouble on the force.

 

Though many netizens deemed the tattoo contest a bit of fun many people thought it was highly inappropriate in a public area in conservative Thailand.

 

The owners of the shopping center - Laemthong, now renamed as Passion Shopping Destination according to Thai Rath - said they were awfully sorry about it all. There was no one there to stop it after the contest started, they said.

 

It was held at the weekend.

 

The police have fined four organizers 5,000 baht each - the top whack for offending Article 388 that relates to lewd and obscene public displays.

 

But the police themselves are also under scrutiny.

 

Provincial chief Traisoon Niamsap ordered on Monday that the Rayong police chief should be transferred for 30 days pending an investigation.

 

A committee of inquiry has been set up to investigate the matter while Damrong Uansoongnern is shuffling paper at HQ.

 

The suggestion is that the cops allowed lewd behavior in public in their jurisdiction.

 

But in a further twist Thai Rath added an intriguing layer of "Thai-ness" to the drama.

 

They said that the kerfuffle and the transfer of the chief could all be related to the trimming of a couple of intertwined trees out front of the Rayong police station.

 

The last time - 20 years ago - that the "wandering Jew" and Bo trees were pruned - the chief ended up being transferred. Only after he performed a "graap" (prostration) in a well publicized apology was he able to return to his duties where he remained until retirement.

 

The Thai media called the trees "magical" in their report.

This response was the obscenity. The choice of venue was poor.nothing more. Learn and move forward.

How about the parking problem where the woman had contacted police who chose not to respond to her not being able to get her car out of her own yard. 

Thatwas obscene. cops should pay for repairs and then respond to calls for help next time

This is the second case in about two weeks involving the wonderful BIB, the previous one was concerning the death / murder of the French guy and the local CHIEF OF POLICE had heard and seen spirits near the police station telling him about the crime. <deleted> is it with this place?

 

Nothing here carries responsibility, it can all be just blamed on outside or external forces, how convenient for them. 

 

The one good thing I have noticed over the years here is that the younger generation are not as willing to buy into this garbage as their parents, they do tend to knuckle down at the crunch, but they are a lot more difficult to convince than the previous generation.

Yes, Thailand is conservative in a special way.  Sort of a "we only care what people think, not what actually happens" type way.

 

It's a little like when Admiral Nelson put his telescope up to his blind eye and said "I see no ships!"

 

I remember once seeing a group of nurses return home from a shift and thinking how cute and respectable they looked in their long dresses and little white socks.  They later came out of their apartment building in short shorts and skimpy t-shirts.

 

A good metaphor for Thailand I think.  Traditional and old-fashioned where they need to be, skimpy AF when they think no one is looking.

In a place where lying to avoid responsibility is the absolute norm, and people believe in magic, ghosts, spirits, luck, fate, fortune telling, etc., the excuses sort of write themselves.  You could say it's deeply ingrained in the culture from top to bottom.

 

It's great for people looking to avoid responsibility for their actions, awful for those who are the victim of those actions.
