Police in Bangkok mounted a dawn raid on a house in Sukhumvit Road Soi 39 this morning and arrested a Thai man of Indian descent who they claim is the money man behind a number of large drug deals.

Serving a warrant on Harpreet Singh was deputy national police chief Pol Gen Chalermkiat Sriworakhan.

The raid was one of thirty carried out with three closely connected to the suspect who police say is implicated in "ice" deals worth hundreds of millions of baht in the northern, central and southern Thai regions.

The suspect denied everything. Thai Rath said he looked stressed and pale during his initial interrogation at drugs suppression HQ.

Chalermkiat said the evidence was clear saying that police had details of a three million baht transfer made for the purchase of a vehicle that was adapted to carry drugs.

Another man, unnamed, was taken in with the suspect.

The house and business premises and other assets valued at a total of 130 million baht have been seized.

Drugs police claimed that the suspect was hiding behind legal businesses in clothes and rental properties.

Neighbors said that the family had lived in the soi for 15 years and liked to make merit. They told Thai Rath that they thought the Thai/Indian man might have been framed.

The article says something different. Dealing with ice cream? (Article translated into Tinglish by right clicking)

Police raided the lodge. In Soi Sukhumvit 39, the accused is under the narcotics warrant. The expansion of 400 kg of ice cream by the people of Indiandescent along with the expected loss of more than 130 million

The police will take control of Mr. Harriet. Out of the house in Soi Prommit. And to investigate at the Narcotics Police. Throughout the investigation, Harriet has always been a pain in the face. And from checking whether the business is doing business properly or not. And preliminary preparation of the property and commercial property to check

Does anybody have an idea how he became Thai? With so much money on his hands, could he have bought the Thai nationality? Just curious.

Probably born a Thai citizen to naturalised Thais of Indian descent. Years ago quite a few Indians took up an offer of locating to Thailand from India and were given citizenship and undeveloped land in Bangkok that is now worth a fortune.

He is "descended" from migrant Indians?

Migration and health in southeast Asian history - The Lancet

"In the century after 1840, around 20 million people from China and 30 million Indians moved to the growing cities and plantations of southeast Asia."

Bangkok has a huge Thai/Indian community.   They own about 25% of everything in the city.   They are originally of Indian descent but have been here generations and are fully naturalised as Thais.

The poor translation is coming from "ยาไอซ์ 400 กก.", which properly translates into "400 kilograms of the drug Ice".

Does it really hurt them so much they cant say he was just a Thai? Is visiting the family tree really necessary on a drugs charge..

Kaek will never be Thais, same as farang.

You'd never see Thai of Chinese decent.

Very racist country. I know as I'm in the process of gaining citizenship, and terrible insults, for example when I went to choose a Thai name at the local khet.

Btw, the original heading doesn't say Thai, but just Kaek.

Jup and quite a few of them have business relations with malay citizens of indian descent. They marry eachother in order to easily do crossborder business.

Strange they never say "Brit of _____descent" innit...:whistling:

Not really, it isn't relavent, why do we need to know that this man has an Indian heritage like so many other Thais?  Thailand is basically a land of immigrants, the original people are racially linked to Australian aborigines, the rest are of Mongolian, Chinese, Indian, Malaysian, Burmese, Laos, Cambodian and Vietnamese descent, mainly.

That sounds like the UK, but every time a naughty bloke who does not look like a Brit is always called a Brit in news stories in LOS, there is no descent mentioned..

Sounds like he got greedy and he has ended up in trouble.

He should have stuck to running apartments which so many of these Thais of Indian descent  In the Sukhumvit Road area seem to have done very successfully over the years.

What does a Brit look like?  It's hardly a race mate!  For example, there have been Iranians in the UK for 500 years!

Every method is a waste of the taxpayers' money. Just sentenced these drug addicts or traffickers to death by hanging is the most effective method.

If they wasted their time and money bringing drug addicts to trial they might not have caught this guy who was funding the importation of large amounts drugs.  For once in Thailands history they are on largely on the right track, taking addicts to rehab and tackling the importation, and the maximum sentence for what is accused of is death anyway, so what is this waste of money you refer to?

There are about 65.000 Indian Thai citizens, most of who have been here for many generations , my guess is that the 1st ones were granted Thai citizenship quite some time ago when they arrived in the 1860's. I have heard that when they 1st arrived here they were given some of the land along what is now Sukhumvit.
